[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic падежь (padežĭ), from Proto-Slavic *padežь. By surface analysis, пасть (pastʹ) + -ёж (-jóž). Doublet of паде́ж (padéž), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
