From Proto-Turkic *ürk- (“to be afraid”).[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (ürk-, “to startle (of sheep)”);[2] Kyrgyz үркүү (ürküü, “to be frightened of”), Southern Altai ӱркӱӱр (ürküür), Uzbek hurkmoq, Uyghur ئۈركىمەك (ürkimek), Turkish ürkmek.
