[edit]Learned borrowing from Aramaic אֲשּׁוּרָיָא (ăšūrāyā). By surface analysis, ܐܵܫܘܿܪ (āšōr, “Assyria; Ashur”) + -ܝܐ (-āyā, the attributive adjective ending). Doublet of ܣܘܼܪܵܝܵܐ (surrāyā) and ܐܵܬ݂ܘܿܪܵܝܵܐ (āṯōrāyā).
