Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘝𑘰𑘜𑘜𑘹 (tāṇaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀢𑀸𑀡𑀺𑀅 (tāṇia, past participle), from Sanskrit तानयति (tānáyati, “to extend”). Cognate with Gujarati તાણવું (tāṇvũ), Hindustani تَانْنَا (tānnā) / तानना (tānnā), Sindhi تاڻَڻُ / ताणणु.
