Cognate with Old Church Slavonic льнъ (lĭnŭ, “flax”), Lithuanian linai, linas (“flax”), Latin līnum (“flax, thread, linen, cable”), Latin līnea (“linen, string, chord, thread”), Old Irish lín (“flax, linen, thread, net”), Ancient Greek λίνον (línon, “flax, linen, thread, garment”).
