[edit]Etymology
[edit]Related to Estonian Viru, Virumaa, the term for Vironia, a historical region in modern northeastern Estonia (reflected in the present-day names of Lääne-Virumaa and Ida-Virumaa (West and East Viru Counties)). The ultimate origin is disputed, with both Baltic (Proto-Balto-Slavic *wī́ˀras (“man”)) and Germanic (Proto-Germanic *weraz) origins proposed (both ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wiHrós (“man”)). Alternatively possibly from an old anthroponym, possibly deriving from virkeä, virota.[1]
