Etymology

Borrowed from French distinguer, from Latin distinguere, present active infinitive of distinguō, with conjugation based on Romanian stinge. Cf. also the earlier (now obsolete, attested 17th century) variant destinge, itself possibly inherited from the same Latin source.[1]
