Etymology

From German Kappus (cabbage), with the first -u- coming by merger with another word with the same meaning. Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian kapuc, kapus (from Venetan capuzzo), and also Old Serbo-Croatian (Kajkavian) kupust (ultimately from Latin composita (mixed).
