[edit]From Dutch rangeer, the present tense 1st person singular form of rangeren, from French ranger, rang, from Old French renc, reng, ranc, rang, from Frankish *hring, from Proto-Germanic *hringaz, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)krengʰ-, extended nasalized form of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to turn, bend”). The rail transport sense was a semantic loan from German rangieren in Dutch. Doublet of ring.
