Usage

Wide table templates

Some periodic tables are too wide for a regular Wikipedia page. See for example {{Periodic table (extended, large)}}. The effect is that that the table runs off of the page background (and possibly off your screen). This can be prevented by zooming out in your browser. However, the table then may become illegible. Also, this is user-dependent, which is not a stable way to present a page.

Horizontal slidebar

An option to help the user in that situation is to use the {{Wide template}}. This is a Wikipedia feature that limits the view nicely to the page width, and adds a scrollbar below the table. This way the user can scroll horizontally through the table, while the view (window) of the table is within the page.

Notes:

1. Our template name is feeded as a parameter to the enveloping {{Wide template}}.
2. The scrollbar only appears when the table is too wide in the actual user situation, so when users with a wide screen don't need the slidebar and will not see it.

Legend

Some wide periodic tables have the option to separate the legend from the template:

• {{Periodic table (extended)|legend=yes}} or
• {{Periodic table (extended)|legend=no}} (default)

Using this in wide templates, the wide table gets the slidebar, but the legend can be on the regular page below it, not sliding. See for example Extended periodic table. In code, this is done:

• {{Wide template|Periodic table (extended)}}{{Element color legend/spdfg blocks}}

So when using these wide templates, the legend is to be added separately or the option must be set to {{{1}}}.
