“Banks do not create money for the public good. They are businesses owned by private shareholders. Their purpose is to make a profit.”

“Other generations faced big challenges: the Industrial Revolution with its sweeping social and economic changes; abolishing slavery; defeating fascism; establishing civil rights for all. The generations now alive must solve the 'money problem'. We must reclaim money from the speculators and restore it to its role as a medium for trade that serves us all.”

“Everyone is waiting for money. National currency is scarce because its creators keep it scarce. So people are experimenting with new ideas for issuing and organising money.”

“The purpose of this pamphlet is to explain how local currencies work. Alone they cannot solve all the multiple financial, social and environmental crises we face, but they are an increasingly important part of the answer.”

“Maybe you care deeply about the environment or other global issues, or you feel strongly about your local region or community, but you just don't see how local money can help. I hope that this pamphlet will show you connections between what you care about and 'the money problem'.”

Hi Annette, one of those titles I've heard of but not read. Last year I read Naomi Klein's "No Logo" for the first time. It has sat unread on my bookshelf for over 10 years! She certainly researches thoroughly. No Logo was a depressing eye-opener into the practices of multi-nationals like Walmart. Business is war!
These days I try to avoid feeding my negativity, which is so easily aroused. A more inspiring book for me was "Systems Thinking - A Primer" by Donella Meadows, first published after her relatively early death. You probably know of her as a co-author of Limits to Growth in 1973. She was a 'master' teacher and I wish I could have attended her classes!
