Gradum A.B. in Collegio Harvardiano anno 1874, alterumque gradum in Collegio Balliolensi Universitatis Oxoniensis anno 1878 accepit. Munera professoris adiutoris linguae Graecae in Universitate Harvardiana (1881–1887), lectoris in Instituto Lowelliano (1889) et Collegio Balliolensi (1893–1896), ac professoris adiutoris Graecae in Universitate Cornelliana (1895–1896) sustinuit. Acroases in Institutione Regali annis 1896 et 1900 habuit, seriemque acroasium in Universitate Californiae produxit, quae in multis collegiis et universitatibus iteravit.
