Magna Sphinx Gizensis (Arabice أبو الهول Abū al-Haul 'pater formidinis'), plerumque appellata Sphinx Gizensis vel Sphinx tantum, est calcaria sphingis recumbentis statua, monstri mythici capite hominis leonisque corpore ornati.[1] Recte ab occidente ad orientem spectans, in Planitie Gizensi secundum occidentalem Nili ripam iuxta Gizam in Aegypto iacet. Facies plerumque putatur imago Chephrenis pharaonis.[2]

E saxo fundamentali sculpta, prima huius sphingis forma stratis massarum saxearum refecta est.[3] Monumentum, 73 metra longum a pede ad caudam, 20.21 metra alta a fundamento ad summum caput, 19 metra latum ad clunes posteriores,[4] est veterrima sculptura monumentalis in Aegypto nota, quae ab antiquis Regni Veteris Aegyptis aedificata esse plerumque putatur, Chephrene pharaone (2558–2532 a.C.n.) regnante.[5]

Sphinx est monolithus in saxo fundamentali planitiei sculptus, regionis quae pro lapicidinis pyramidum aliorumque monumentorum in proximo erat.[6] Nummulitica regionis calx consistit in stratis quae erosioni varie resistunt (plerumque a vento harenaque a vento mota), ad iniquam condicionem deteriorem quae in corpore Sphingis videtur efficientibus.[6][7] Imum corpus, pedibus non exclusis, est saxum solidum.[1] Corpus leonis usque ad collum, a stratis mollioribus sculptum, magnopere dilapsum est.[8]; Stratum capitis multo durius est.[8][9] Magna Sphinx Gizensis est una e maximis veterrimisque statuis notis, sed primae res de eius origine et historia iam disputantur, inter quae praecipue aevum cum aedificatum esset, a quibus hominibus, et qua pro causa.
