Lian (Japanese: キクイ Kikui) is a warden tasked with watching over the noble Kleavor, Lord of the Woods, in the Obsidian Fieldlands of Hisui. He is a member of the Pearl Clan.
He bears some resemblance to Clay, sporting a similar hat and similar hair styles, but the relationship between the two, if any, is unknown.
In the core series games
Although he is young, Lian was given the role of warden because he has proved to be very talented. The night after the player arrives in Hisui, a space-time rift opened over the Grandtree Arena, Lord Kleavor's home, and a blast caused Kleavor to frenzy. Several members of both the Diamond Clan and the Galaxy Team were sent out to investigate, but all members returned with failure and injuries. When the player arrives to try and help calm Kleavor, Lian is suspicious of the outsider and challenges them to a battle instead. After his defeat, Irida arrives and vouches for the player and asks for Lian's cooperation. Finally accepting help, Lian reveals he had brought Kleavor's favorite food—Plump Beans—in an attempt to calm the noble Pokémon, which the player suggests be turned into balms to be thrown at Kleavor instead. After Kleavor is calmed of his frenzy, Lian makes a brief visit to the player at Jubilife Village before returning back to his position at the Obsidian Fieldlands.
Lian is later summoned to the Summit Camp in the Coronet Highlands by Irida to aid the player in stopping the raging Dialga, if the player chose to side with Irida, or Palkia, if player chose to side with Adaman, at the Temple of Sinnoh on Mount Coronet. Having expertise in analyzing various ores of the Hisui region, he is assigned to investigate the strange red ore unearthed in the Primeval Grotto. He mines the ore with his partner Sliggoo and gives it to the player.
After the situation at the Temple of Sinnoh is resolved, Lian can be found at the Grandtree Arena. He offers the player to initiate a rematch with Lord Kleavor, seeing how Kleavor has recovered from his frenzy and has managed to temper some of that power. If the player completes the rematch, he will award three Exp. Candies M and, if the player received no damage, one Exp. Candy L.
Pokémon
Lian sends out all of his Pokémon at once against the player. Like most members of the Pearl Clan, he does not keep his Pokémon in Poké Balls.
