Wikimaps Tartu–Hong Kong
ByThe Wikimaps project had come to a stage where it was possible to arrange an event around the tools and the topics of our project. In this project we want to take old maps to Wikimedia Commons, georeference them and make them findable. Then we want to create a world map with a time slider.
The first stop was in Tartu, Estonia. During the State of the Map Baltics we arranged a workshop with mappers from the Baltic countries. I had gathered a set of Tartu maps from Estonian archives to works with. The participants created ideas for reusing old maps or discussed the peculiarities of geographic information on old maps. Some of them had time to work with paper, scissors and glue.
The next gathering was in Wikimania, where we arranged a round table on the needs of geographically oriented Wikimedia projects. During the week, the toolset was ready to be tested. The Wikimaps Warper can now be used on Wikimedia Commons, and the resulting maps can be used in the Open Historical Map project. Have a look at the Wikimaps project page for advice.
In the end of the week OpenStreetMap celebrated their 9th Birthday with a code sprint and Wikimaps participated by having the results of the project available for experimentation.
