Disease

Review

Hi, this article is looking pretty good compared to other simple wikipedia articles. But I have a few comments:

• "Published" and "extracted" should be simplified or linked.

• All the "Other websites" should have the {{cite web}} template.

• The section "Banana fruits" needs refs.

• There are up to 20 fruit to a tier. (called a hand). This sounds a bit funny. Please clarify the sentence.

• Only about 10–15% of all production is for export. Can a ref be provided for this?

• Bananas have a false stem (called pseudostem),which is made by the lower part of the leaves... I believe there should be a space between "(called pseudostem)," and "which".

• Dessert bananas change their color and usually turn yellow, when they are ripe; plantains and bananas generally used for cooking stay green. Certain bananas have other colors when ripe. This sounds slightly awkward and would be better merged with the section, "The banana plant".

• The section Fibre inside the section of "Different uses of bananas" has no content.

Comments

• Fruit should be linked in its first usage.
• The bananas that are used for desserts, are called dessert bananas. I don't think the period here is necessary.
• When most bananas are ripe, they turn yellow or, sometimes, red. I think it would be simpler just to say ...turn yellow or red.
• Leaves are arranged as a spiral and may grow 2.7 metres (8.9 ft) long and 60 cm (2.0 ft) wide.[5] Metre, ft, and centimeter have to be linked.
• There are between three and twenty tiers to a bunch. A bunch usually weighs between thirty and fifty kilograms. Numbers bigger than ten have to be written in numbers.
• There are about 16 red links in the article right now. I think that's a little too much for a GA.
• It would be nice if the section about allergies was expanded...in fact, some overall expanding would be good for so extensive a subject.
• Why is there a stub tag? :P

"Simple English" ... This is not!!!!

This so-called simple English wikipedia article contains the following words which I don't think are simple enough for anyone who is not an accomplished scholar:

Herbaceous ... come on, this is right in the introduction!

Here is how to do that properly: "Banana is the common word for a type of fruit, and also the name for the plant on which it grows, which is not a tree but actually a special kind of herb."

Cultivated ... try "grown"

Species ... "kinds"

Commerce ... "business"

Cultivars ... come on, seriously, are you even trying to make it simplified?

"Before cultivation" ... try "Before farmers started growing them"

"Gastrointestinal" ... "tummy" (of course!)

The audience for these articles is young children, people who are not native speakers of English, and people who don't have the capacity to understand scholarly articles that use academic prose. I believe that over-simplification is better than under-simplification when communicating with such audiences. I realize that most people use WIkipedia writing as a vehicle to raise their self-esteem and to show off their cleverness, but Simple English Wikipedia is not the right place for that.
