Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research[1], popularly known as SAMEER, is an Indian autonomous research and development society under the aegis of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.
History
[edit]In the early fifties, Prof. Homi Bhabha deputed young researcher Prof. R.V.S. Sitaram for training to Atomic Energy Education with an intention to initiate accelerator activities. Prof. Sitharam was asked to design linear accelerator which he successfully created and generated 3 MeV electron beam[2]. Later in early sixties, he was entrusted to create Transmitter Receiver (TR) modules which formed the base of India's first Mesosperic-Tropospheric-Stratospheric (MST) Radar made by SAMEER in 1991 at Gadanki[3]
After successful implementation of the linear accelerator and TR switches it was felt that dedicated group for such applied microwaves is needed and this led to formation of the Special Microwave Product Unit (SMPU) at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1977. This research group was renamed as Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) and was transformed into an autonomous group in 1984 under Department of Electronics under the leadership of Prof. R. V. S. Sitharam as the first Director[4].
Centres
[edit]From the basement of TIFR, SAMEER shifted to its present campus at IITB, Powai. In past four decades, SAMEER has grown into strong group of five centers with multiple sub-centers around each centre.
- SAMEER Mumbai: Center for Microwave Research (CMR) is the head office and hosts the major research labs focusing on accelerators, radars, atmospheric instrumentation, diagnostics, MRI, photonics and quantum communication. The head office can be reached at SAMEER[5], Hill Side, IITB Campus, Powai, Mumbai 400 076.
- SAMEER Chennai: Center for Electromagnetics (CEM) which was under Department of Electronics was merged with SAMEER in 1987 and became the forerunner in cutting edge research in electromagnetics[6], thermal engineering, EMI/EMC and applied engineering. Chennai group can be reached at SAMEER CEM, CIT Campus, Taramani, Chennai, Tamil Nadu 600113.
- SAMEER Kolkata: Center for Millimeter Wave (CMM) was setup at Salt Lake Kolkata in 1994. SAMEER Kolkata can be reached at Plot-L2, Block-GP, Sec-V, Salt Lake, Kolkata, West Bengal 700091.
- SAMEER Visakhapatnam: Centre for Electromagnetics Environmental Effects (CE3) was established in 2014 to focus on EMI/EMC/ EMP research.E3 can be reached at SAMEER E3, Plot No. 40, APIC Industrial Park, NH-5 Gambheeram Village, Anandapuram Mandal, Visakhapatnam 531163, Andhra Pradesh, India
- SAMEER Guwahati: In 2015 dedicated center for High Power Microwave Tube and Component Technology (CHMTCT) was established at IIT Guwahati. The center can be reached at: SAMEER, Centre for High Power Tubes and Components Technology, Technology Complex, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati 781039, Assam, India
