Muhammed Kerem Aktürkoğlu (born 21 October 1998) is a Turkish professional footballer who plays as a left winger for Primeira Liga club Benfica and the Turkey national team.

Club career

[edit]

Early career

[edit]

Aktürkoğlu began his career with Başakşehir's youth academy, and was loaned to Bodrumspor. He then spent various seasons in the amateur TFF Third League, before breaking out with Erzincanspor in the 2019–20 season scoring 20 goals in 34 games.

Galatasaray

[edit]

Aktürkoğlu transferred to Galatasaray on 2 September 2020.[1] He made his professional debut with Galatasaray in a 1–1 Süper Lig tie with Kayserispor on 23 November 2020.[2]

On 16 August 2021, Aktürkoğlu was involved in a physical altercation with teammate Marcão during a game against Giresunspor.[3]

Aktürkoğlu became the champion in the Süper Lig in the 2022–23 season with the Galatasaray team. Defeating Ankaragücü 4–1 away in the match played in the 36th week on 30 May 2023, Galatasaray secured the lead with 2 weeks before the end and won the 23rd championship in its history.[4]

After Wilfried Zaha has joined Galatasaray, Kerem lost his favourite inverted winger position to Zaha and manager Buruk started to position him behind Mauro Icardi. However Kerem's performance got indirectly affected by playing at that position by taking turns with Dries Mertens.

On 8 August, 2023, he scored his first goal of the season in a 0–3 away win against Olimpija in a UEFA Champions League qualifying round game. On 16 August, in a 4–2 home game win against Samsunspor, Aktürkoğlu scored two goals and provided one assist. In his first 10 competitive matches, he scored 4 goals and provided 5 assists in total.[5] On 3 October, he scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League in a 3–2 away game win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. In the reverse fixture, on 29 November, he came in as a substitute and scored a goal to secure a 3–3 home game draw against Manchester United. The goal was nominated and later awarded as the Goal of the Week of matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League.[6]

Benfica

[edit]

On 3 September 2024, Aktürkoğlu joined Benfica on a five-year deal for a reported fee of €12 million, with the club also receiving 10% of a future transfer, and the release clause was set at €60 million.[7][8]

On 14 September, Aktürkoğlu scored on his debut for the club, netting the opener in a 4–1 home league victory over Santa Clara.[9] He scored again in Benfica's opening game of their 2024–25 Champions League campaign, his first goal in the competition for them, opening their 2–1 win away over Red Star Belgrade.[10] On 27 October, he scored his first Primeira Liga hat-trick, netting three goals in the first-half of a 5–0 victory over Rio Ave. In the process, he registered the most goals and assists (eight) for the club in his first seven matches reaching Félix Guerreiro's previous record set in the 1964–65 season.[11][12] At the end of the month, he was named the league's Player of the Month and Forward of the Month for the months of September and October.[13][14]

International career

[edit]

Aktürkoğlu made his debut for Turkey national team on 27 May 2021 in a friendly against Azerbaijan.[15]

On 7 June 2024, he was named in Turkey's 26-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2024.[16] On 18 June, he scored Turkey's third goal in a 3–1 victory against Georgia in the opening match of the European competition.[17]

On 9 September 2024, Aktürkoğlu scored his first international hat-trick against Iceland in a 3–1 win.[18]

Personal life

[edit]

When Aktürkoğlu was just ten months old, he went missing in the rubble caused by the 1999 İzmit earthquake.[19] He was found alive and well by his grandfather.[20]

When he scored against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, he dedicated his goal to the Palestinian children, victim to the Gaza–Israel conflict.[21]

Following the match, he went on to post on X (Twitter): "You (Palestinian children) are always in our hearts. We haven't forgotten you, we never will."

Aktürkoğlu is Muslim, and has performed Umrah pilgrimage before.[22]
