Polina Kudermetova (Russian: Полина Эдуардовна Кудерметова, Polina Eduardovna Kudermetova, born 4 June 2003) is a Russian professional tennis player. She has been ranked by the WTA as high as world No. 114 in singles, achieved on 4 November 2024, and No. 283 in doubles on 10 April 2023.

Career

At the 2023 Australian Open, Kudermetova advanced to her first Grand Slam tournament main draw on her qualifying debut by defeating Anastasia Gasanova,[1] Katie Boulter,[2] and Asia Muhammad.[3] She lost to local wildcard Olivia Gadecki in the first round.[4]

Kudermetova recorded her first WTA main-draw win at the 2023 Libéma Open over Yuan Yue.[5] She lost her next match to Liudmila Samsonova.[6]

At the 2023 Korea Open, she reached the quarterfinals defeating sixth seed Alycia Parks[7] and Kathinka von Deichmann,[8] before losing to Yanina Wickmayer.[9] At the same tournament, at the 2024 upgraded edition, ranked No. 163, she made her debut at the 500-level as a lucky loser and defeated qualifier Priscilla Hon in the first round recording her first WTA 500 win,[10][11] and upset seventh seed Ekaterina Alexandrova[12][13] to reach her first WTA 500 quarterfinal where she lost to third seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.[14] As a result she reached a new career-high ranking in the top 130 on 23 September 2024.[15]

Partnering Alina Korneeva, Kudermetova was runner-up in doubles at the 2024 WTA 125 Abierto Tampico, losing to Carmen Corley and Rebecca Marino in the final.[16]

She reached her third career quarterfinal with wins over second seed Nadia Podoroska[17] and Varvara Lepchenko,[18] and then her first WTA Tour singles semifinal at the 2024 Mérida Open with a win over Nina Stojanović.[19] Kudermetova lost in the last four to Ann Li.[20]

Personal life

She is the younger sister of professional tennis and former top-ten player, Veronika Kudermetova, and daughter of Russian national ice hockey champion Eduard Kudermetov.[21][22][23]

  1. ^ The first Premier 5 event of the year has switched back and forth between the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Ladies Open since 2009. Dubai was classified as a Premier 5 event from 2009 to 2011 before being succeeded by Doha for the 2012–2014 period. In 2015, Dubai regained its Premier 5 status while Doha was demoted to Premier status. The Premier 5 tournaments were reclassified as WTA 1000 tournaments in 2021.
