Why is this called "Football (soccer) in Tasmania", when the sport is called "soccer" in Tasmania. Is Daveb trying to impose his views on what this sport should be called in Tasmania, and perhaps the rest of the country? – AxSkov () 06:29, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Football" is mostly a Sydney-centric name for soccer. Football in all other regions usually always means either Aussie Rules (in Vic, Tas, SA, WA & NT) or Rugby (in rural NSW & Qld), so as to distinguish this code from the others it is called soccer. I'm also concerned that calling soccer "football" will give the wrong impression to non-Australians that the common name for soccer is football, which it isn't. – AxSkov () 07:07, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This page should not have been moved! 3:2 does not by any stretch of the imagination make a consensus, and I am adding my name to the oppose list making it an even 3:3. Jooler 21:58, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the page should not have been moved. The reality is that the sport goes by a number of names. The naming issue for the sport has been discussed at length in Football (soccer) and other articles and the compromised used for that title used for many related articles. For consistency the dual naming should have been used. Add me to the list of those that oppose the change. --Daveb 02:34, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This article is consistent with other articles, and with established policy. The main football (soccer) article is titled the way it is because it covers the sport across the whole world. This article only covers the sport in one area, where the term "soccer" is almost universal. Most regional football pages just say "football" in the title, such as Football in England, Football in Italy, Football in India..., with the exceptions being those English-speaking countries that primarily call the game "soccer": Soccer in the United States, Soccer in Canada, and Soccer in Australia. Only global football pages generally have "football (soccer)" in the title. Go to http://www.wikiwax.com and compare the results for "football (soccer)", "soccer" and "football". sjorford (?!) 18:31, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Other issues (other than soccer/football debate)

[edit]

The list of silverware won is up for debate. I'm not really into whoever put the Southern u19 titles there because I think it really should just be senior titles and not for reserve teams either. Southern division one is a bit of a tricky one because it involves both reserve teams and independent clubs.

I'll leave the u19 titles in there for now. TinTin

List of clubs

[edit]

Where should we draw the line as to which clubs are included?

  • In regards to having their own articles, I think it should be limited to the NPL and SPL clubs only.
  • In regards to being listed on the page, maybe a list for each of the next 2 divisions?
  • In any case, I don't think teams like Barnstoneworth United need to be listed, nor the northern junior teams.
  • How do we handle teams which have been relegated from the NPL or SPL?

-- Chuq 11:33, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Northern Junior teams should be removed as they have no relevence to the top tier of football in Tasmania. Teams like Barnstoneworth and Huon Valley play in the Second Division and are eligible for promotion to The Southern premier League so articles should be made on them. Boltonfan22 12:26, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the above. Division one and lower clubs are eligible for promotion to the premier leagues, and also participate in the state-wide knockout cup with the npl and spl, so their inclusion is important. Junior clubs perhaps should be listed but certainly don't require separate club pages.

Stray history article

[edit]

The article Tasmania national football team has been created previously but there is no reference here. Without references or citations the context and relevance is unknown - can anyone shed light on this? Tomperc 02:33, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a load of crap to me! Proposed for deletion. -- Chuq 04:53, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What the hell is this article. Deletion immediatly. Boltonfan22 08:32, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is absolutely no crap and no hoax!! The matches were played against Tahiti (01 May 1985) as well as against Australia (10 October 1984). I will move the article to Tasmania official football team. Like with Frøyan official football team. And I will add references. Please also see: Talk:List of men's national football (soccer) teams. That you here, interested in Soccer in Australia and maybe even living in Australia, don't know about the matches, together with the above question, shows to me that this encyclopaedia imperatively needs an article about the Tasmania official football team of course with references and external links!--Rheinländer 15:36, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well you learn something new every day don't you. Never thought they were real and as i was -7 years old when these matches were played so i never heard of these matches taking place. Tasmania will probably never play another "Internationl" match again so is this article really necessary. Can't we just add this information in a section on the Football (soccer) in Tasmania page? Boltonfan22 00:17, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Weird :) I'm glad I just added the {{prod}} tag, I was tempted to delete immediately! My immediate thoughts were "oh great, another person who thinks Tasmania is a separate country", but it appears these were national team v club or national team v state all-stars team games. I don't know how "offical" this team is. The Roon-ba site appears to be confused as it lists the game as an international game! -- Chuq 00:32, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification

[edit]

As maintainer of the Roon Ba site, I must say that there is no claim to the validity of Tasmania as a 'national' team, and no such claims are made. Tasmania is treated as a 'non-FIFA' territory/entity, as it is of course an integral part of Australia. There are other similar cases on the site - Shetland and Western Isles in Scotland, for example. However, these territories do have a certain degree of autonomy/government, and it is quite conceivable that a Tasmania select team would be able to play the Australian national team, as it is unlikely that any of the Tasmanian players would have made the selection for the full Australian team. Just to reiterate, none of the results on the website are meant in any way to indicate, imply or give credence to nationalistic claims by any of the teams or representative sides listed. They are present merely to serve the purposes of statistical completeness and of course, to satisfy that most universal of all instincts - curiosity.

[edit]

I'd like to add http://soccertas.blogspot.com/ to the external links. I am not involved in the operation or running of this site at all, but it isn't a hugely popular site. It *is* however the only site about the sport in Tassie which allows reader feedback (ie. blog or forum). Agree/disagree? -- Chuq 01:17, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Category

[edit]

I've created a new category, Category:Tasmanian football (soccer) clubs - if you'd like to help move some existing clubs into this category (and at the same time remove them from any redundant cats, such as Category:Australian football (soccer) clubs, Category:Sporting clubs in Tasmania, and Category:Football (soccer) in Tasmania), please do so! -- Chuq (talk) 03:21, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Further reading

[edit]

I think that Chris Hudsons A Century of Soccer should be listed somewhere. It is the authority on the history of the game in Tas yeah. Perhaps under a 'Futher Reading' heading? Shoudl this come before or after Reference and/or External Links? Further reading: C Hudson, A century of soccer, 1898–1998, Hobart, 1998. Lastly perhaps Walter Pless blog should be linked under further reading as well?--TinTin (talk) 03:35, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Significant trophies

[edit]

I would like to create two sub-headings one 'mens' the second 'womens'. The Mens sub-scetion would be the same as current with a womens section having the same information for womens (not currently in the article). Any help with this much appreciated. 2013 Structure

[edit]

Good article FFT here outlining structure of FFT Leagues in 2013. Obviously a few Wiki Artilces will need to be updated to reflect this. --TinTin (talk) 06:56, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2015 Changes

[edit]

In 2015 the SPL and NPL have new names and logos: http://www.footballfedtas.com.au/index.php?id=15&tx_ttnews[year]=2014&tx_ttnews[month]=12&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=1139&cHash=3d58105472b4c354e4efbf3debfbd69e At some stage various articles need to be updated to reflect this. The SPL will also have some new clubs on board. I'll try and update some articles but feel free to help.--TinTin (talk) 00:52, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed this as well! I'll add it to my to-do list. -- Chuq (talk) 02:09, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Argh! I think we just tried to do the same moves at the same time. Southern Championship was just a redirect, so I moved it over the top of it. I expected both Northern Championship and Southern Championship to require disambiguation, but it seems not! -- Chuq (talk) 02:23, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I saw that double move of ours. Ha ha. Yeah I was surprised that the names are unique in Wiki too. I put a disambiguation link at the top of the Southern Championship to article Southern Championship previously redirected to: Southern Conference Championship, so hopefully that will keep everyone happy. Also the update of the logos was needed not just to pretty it up, but I think the use of the FFT logo, in articles that aren't the main FFT article is legitimate under fair use?--TinTin (talk) 01:03, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rapid Legacy

[edit]

A quick history question. I've read a few Tasmanian Football histories which denote the great success of the club Rapid, however reading two articles on wiki: both Southern FC and Kingborough Lions United FC claim to be entities merged from Rapid. Which is correct? --TinTin (talk) 04:51, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
