Mental Health Centre, commonly known as MHC,Tvm (Oolampara Hospital[1] and Peroorkada Hospital), is the oldest[2] and largest[3] psychiatry tertiary care centre in Kerala. The hospital is located at Oolampara in the district of Thiruvananthapuram.

History

Mental Health Centre, Trivandrum was established in 1870 by Honorary King of Travancore. During that period the Mental Hospital took care of patients with Epilepsy, Mental Retardation and Psychiatric conditions.

In early years, there was no system of patient care with patient bystander. The patients who were admitted here was rejected by the Society. A hope and ray of light entered in this hospital by the visit of Mother Teresa in 1983. Her valuable suggestions and ideas paved a way for Public Support and foundation for various developmental activities within the hospital.

Later in 1985, the hospital was renamed as Mental Health centre.[2]

Mental Health Centre, Trivandrum is a 531[4] bedded hospital with 34 wards. It covers an area of 36 acres. Patients from all over the country seek psychiatric care from MHC and is reputed for it's treatment care.[2] The hospital provides services of over 15 doctors.

The hospital provides round the clock care including inpatient, outpatient and Emergency services. Facilities of rehabilitation for cured mentally ill patients is also provided.[2]

Academics

Mental Health Centre, Trivandrum also provides DNB Postgraduate training in psychiatry accredited under National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences.[4]
