Rectangle & Rectangles (French:Rectangle et Rectangles) is an abstract National Film Board of Canada (NFB) animated short film by René Jodoin, in which a progression of brightly coloured geometric shapes bombard the viewer, set to a drum beat.[1] Jodoin completed the film in 1984, having left his position as head of the NFB's French language animation unit five years earlier to direct his own projects.[2]
To create the film, Jodoin programmed a computer to coordinate an orchestration of an electronic beam of light, color filters and a camera.[1] The filmmaker stated that "the aim was to show time. I tried to make a film with the absence of almost everything so that you could see time move and visually you can become interested through the play of colour and motion."[2]
The video release of the film by the NFB included a warning that it may trigger epileptic seizures.[2]
