Post-nominal formatting
[edit]Hi 514Charlie, this was not a clean up as the formatting of post-nominals should be maintained as found, even if adding the template. As per MOS:POSTNOM:
Where this manual provides options, consistency should be maintained within an article unless there is a good reason to do otherwise. The Arbitration Committee has ruled that editors should not change an article from one guideline-defined style to another without a substantial reason unrelated to mere choice of style, and that revert-warring over optional styles is unacceptable. If discussion cannot determine which style to use in an article, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.
Therefore, please make sure to maintain consistency within a article when editing post-nominals: this includes commas and sizing. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 18:00, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
- Heya Gaia Octavia Agrippa,
- Fair point about consistency re: sizing and commas. However, later in the MOS we have the following passage:
This manual formatting is only needed for cases where {{post-nominals}} does not handle the abbreviation in question.
- Thus, should the piped links be replaced with the template so long as the post-nominal letters exist within that country's preset list? Or does the "editors should not change an article from one guideline-defined style" trump this guidance?
- On a related note, I do think it's worth revisiting commas outside specific cases (e.g. baronetcies and peerages) since it does create some weird interactions when hovering over a link. In Alston-Roberts-West's case, the following text is displayed:
Lieutenant-Colonel George Arthur Alston-Roberts-West,, also known as George West, [...]
. However, this isn't the forum to discuss :) - Thanks! 514Charlie (talk) 11:52, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
