BOP poll

[edit]

Thanks for pointing out the above Brian, I never would have seen it otherwise. A poll of 300 people in one of New Zealand's most conservative regions doesn't prove anything. Do you seriously beleive republicans support repealling the Bill of Rights? --Lholden 01:40, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I knew I could find you at WikiNews! Selwyn's blog is under creative commons, and given that the entire pamphlet has been reproduced numerous times, and will be evidence in court, it is in the public domain. I don't know much about Wikisource, but I will have a look into it. Currently, I'm trying to find more info and get it onto the Main page's In The News section. --Midnighttonight 04:05, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Independence

[edit]

That's fine. I've copied some stuff an anon user had put on the Declaration of Independence of New Zealand article, which wasn't really well placed. That's where I got the idea to create a "Independence of New Zealand" article. --Lholden 22:07, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brian, I've fleshed out the Independence article. Let me know what you think. --Lholden 05:07, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NZ CotF archiving

[edit]

Hi Brian - I see you've just archived the NZ Collaboration of the fortnight page, but it may be worth having a look at the discussion on the talk page about it... with the "by decade" votes, it might be worth having 1980s as the CotF and leaving all the other decades on the page as potential candidates for future CotFs (CsotF?) A short Esperanzial update

[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note your comment about slight POV. Though I can't put my finger on any words which are PoV, and certainly wouldn't be worried about defamation of a living person as all material is factually correct, I would agree the article as a whole is slightly negative - the difficulty I suspect is that for some people any list of their publicly known actions will tend to leave a negative impression... Did you have any suggestion for improving it?

Oh, and in a completely unrelated note, I see comment about you contributing to Anglican articles - any interest in improving the Samuel Marsden one?Winstonwolfe 00:20, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote most of the original article, and I didn't intend it to be negative. Perhaps the negativity has come in later. However, I have to point out that I did buy a car from Tame once, and it was a very poor car (although I knew that when I bought it). Anyway, feel free to hack on the article as much as you see fit.-gadfium 04:04, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Governor-General article clean up

[edit]

Hi Brian, I think the above needs a table for the list of Governors. Or perhaps the GG list should have its own article. That would work better. --Lholden 09:08, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, a list like the one you produced would be good, although I don't think the PM needs to be mentioned until the appointment of Sir Denis Blundell (this is the first G-G that, as far as I'm aware, was appointed on the advice of a NZ minister) --Lholden 21:02, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Hyde Park Memorial.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Hyde Park Memorial.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 07:07, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm just a bus section away from it... I've been meaning to get a couple of pics of things around Wellington (including the Wellington War Memorial, outside Parliament). I don't think tomorrow would be a good day however. Re quotes; yeah I saw them on Monarchy NZ and thought I could use them on Republicanism in New Zealand. Makes it easier to use the "republicanism by stealth" quotes - also it allows you to show what is someone's views. BTW, do you study law? --Lholden 11:24, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brian, could you please say where you got this image from? I ask because although some government departments give permission for their material to be used, others do not (see Template_talk:NZCrownCopyright), and I'd like to confirm the image's status before using it in other articles. -- Avenue 00:28, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Governor-General's site isn't one of the permissive ones, so using the image more widely might be problematic. It probably needs a fair use rationale to be used in the Anand Satyanand article too. -- Avenue 01:00, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's a silly policy too

[edit]

I think the policy on honorifics is strange too. I've fought it for too long though, so I eventually decided to at least make sure it's uniformly enforced. What I never understood is the fact that the policy allows post-nominal letters, titles, and anything else, but "the Honourable" and "Her Excellency" made people upset. --Ibagli (Talk) 16:33, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Hi Brian;

Yes, Ahnentafel is used in English, chiefly in genealogy when listing ancestors in the manner that Elizabeth II's are shown. There is an article here regarding the Ahnentafel that may be of interest and help clarify things. It has become a practice, when listing "full" ancestries, to do them in Ahnentafel form here on Wikipedia and subsequently, several such articles have been moved to or created at locations with Ahnentafel in the title (e.g, Ahnentafel of Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Ahnentafel of Harald V of Norway, Ahnentafel of Nicholas II of Russia, Ahnentafel of Prince Wolfgang of Hesse, etc). Reasons for moving the Proclamation of the Dominion of New Zealand

[edit]

I am asking why you felt that this move was neccessary.

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Proclamation_of_the_Dominion_of_New_Zealand

It was quite difficult to find an official copy of this important document. It is a very short document. Why should it not be included in the main article? This text of the Proclamation being moved seems like an act of "false-economy" of words in the main articles of Wikipedia, in my opinion.

70.30.193.143 20:27, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's silly. The Proclamation is the source document to which the article refers. It doesn't matter how large or small the document is, the proper place for it is on Wikisource. --Lholden 23:32, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No Mr. Holden, it is not silly. I went to alot of trouble to get an official copy of the Proclamation of the Dominion of New Zealand. I would venture to guess that unless you have actually gone to the National Museum in New Zealands' capitol, that you have never read the text of this document before. You would do well to realise that a Republic can be just as corrupt and oppressive as you seem to think that a Constitutional-Monarchy can be. Neither system is better than the other, it just happens that the latter is the present tradition of your country at the moment.

Well, I live in Wellington, I've been to Te Papa countless times and I've read the Proclamation, in fact I've seen the original document signed by King Edward (although that was at the National Archives, in the constitution room). I actually posted it last year on my website.
I don't want to start a debate on the republic at Brian's talk page, however, I have never stated that the monarchy is corrupt or oppressive.
--Lholden 03:21, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. I had already added a quote back into the Dominion article, and left the following comment on User:70.30.193.143's talk page -- "But you can quote relevant parts of them in a pertinent article. So I have put a quote in the Dominion article. It would be extraordinarily silly to have an article about X but not include info about how X came about simply because that info appeared somewhere else which happened to be outside en wiki. We are supposed to be informing readers, not hiding information from them". Moriori 23:37, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much Moriori, for quoting the full text of the Proclamation Dominion of New Zealand (Sept. 9, 1907) in the main body of the Dominion of New Zealand Wikipedia article. I appreciate the kindness, and thoughtfulness very much indeed.

My RFA

Thank you, Brian New Zealand, for voting on my RFA, which passed 95 to 1. Now that I have the mop, I hope I can live up to the standard, and be a good administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. —this is messedrocker (talk) 19:12, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

It was tagged with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images/Media #3 - Improper license. Take a look at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and you can ask the guys at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems. They are very helpful and will be able to give advice as to the correct tagging. This is to inform you that, under current circumstances, the project page above qualifies for deletion. There are currently two criteria used to determine this. They are a total lack of activity on the page for three months and no individuals listed as members of the project. If you were to add a members section and add your name, however, neither criteria would hold. I urge you to consider doing so. Badbilltucker 19:01, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stop

[edit]

Stop trying to distort reality. You have simply no idea of the true situation. I shall continue to revert the article. TharkunColl 23:18, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you trying to deny the UK its own institutions? Have you any idea how offensive that is? TharkunColl 23:25, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Her role as queen of the other places is a relic of colonialism. To say that she is queen of 16 countries in the intro is a willful distortion or suppression of the fact that her role in the UK is qualitively different from her role elsewhere. Dominions come and go, and all of them will be republics one day. TharkunColl 23:39, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
