Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria) we have been challenged by the amount of non-free images (although all of them are OK under the fair-use rationale for currency images). I was wondering if you can help me to find out if the Austrian Mint has any copyrights over those images, and if any, if they allow them to be used in Wikipedia. At the end, the article is a good advertising for the mint and every image is linked to their site. I was under the impression that pictures of coins can be used under the fair-use rationale, but the large number of non-free images is what is challenged in the article. Details of the discussion here. Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 22:34, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, no idea -- but the lack of free images shouldn't really be a problem, if you ask me... —Nightstallion 09:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, there are other editors saying that the excess of non-free images is a problem. Did you have same problem when putting together the 2 euro commemorative coin article? What can be done in this article defense? One of the editors is even suggesting the complete removal of all images, which for me makes no sense. Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:06, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
- I'd suggest you ask User:Theeuro, who knows a lot about coins and has been able to get a hold of free coin images for my articles. —Nightstallion 09:08, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I did post him the same question, looking forward his answer. Miguel.mateo (talk) 09:11, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:BZÖ Logo.png
Thank you for uploading Image:BZÖ Logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac (talk) 17:21, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Faroese update
Gerhard Lognberg, an MP for Javnaðarflokkurin has announced that he no longer supports the Faroese government, leaving it without a majority in parliament.[1] Prime Minister Jóannes Eidesgaard has announced that all options are on the table, including a minority government, new coalition talks and calling elections.[2] Haukur (talk) 10:30, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Interesting, thanks! And why? —Nightstallion 13:00, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Disagreement over a proposed tunnel to Sandoy. Haukur (talk) 14:46, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Mh. Well. I'd have considered the political status or civil unions or something like that, but a simple matter like this... —Nightstallion 14:54, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, you can guess which island Gerhard Lognberg is from :) Tunnel-politics are a big deal in the Faroes, they've spent vast resources on tunnels. Of course now we could potentially get a new coalition with different policies on a range of issues. But I'd prefer not making predictions - I was way off last time around :) Haukur (talk) 17:33, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Refresh my memory, would you -- what did you predict as opposed to we got? And thanks a lot for keeping me up-to-date, much appreciated! —Nightstallion 17:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I thought it would be impossible for them to form a coalition without Fólkaflokkurin - and then they did! Haukur (talk) 17:59, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, yes, I recall now. Maybe we'll get a completely pro-independence coalition this time... ;) —Nightstallion 18:10, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- That seems like a definite possibility. For now speculation seems to be centered on the current coalition limping along as a minority government, possibly by making some concessions to Sjálvstýrisflokkurin in return for them not supporting a no-confidence vote. Haukur (talk) 18:27, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I'll continue to hope for independence then. ;) —Nightstallion 18:30, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

hi there,
the only thing that comes into my mind is to use Flickr. I will see what I can find, but this can take some time... Gryffindor 12:36, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Great, thanks. They needn't be completely free images, I think I found some of Faymann, but I couldn't figure out the precise license... —Nightstallion 12:37, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, I just took a look here [3] to find for Creative Commons licenses. There are tons of pictures of Faymann, unfortunately they are not free to use for Commons, see here [4]. It would be a good idea maybe to write to the party centrals and ask them for free images to be used for the Commons. If you don't want to use the Commons, you can always upload them onto the Wiki itself as a press-shot or maybe even use a book-cover (if nothing else works). I started Werner Faymann, sorry if I am not able to help much on the images here. If you have some time, maybe take some quick photos of any election posters (without the face of someone though) and you can upload them here [5]. Gryffindor 12:51, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Under what license should I upload images I get from other sources to Wikipedia? And yeah, I plan to take images of as many election posters as I can, preferably all of them. —Nightstallion 12:53, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hm, the best would obviously be if they completely relinquish rights, making it a public domain photo that anyone can use. In that case even uploading it on the Commons should not be a problem. Most images of Faymann on Flickr are Creative Commons, which means they are allowed to be even used for commercial purposes, however they do not allow the image to be modified, which is bad. Get a written permission from them, which has to be send to permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org, see here [6]. Further options are here Wikipedia:Upload. Basically the author/party has to give explicit permission in writing, or use promotional photo from an advertisement, press kit, or other promotional source (which can be difficult though) or use a magazine cover. Which license to use is explained in the upload scrolldown menu that you follow. If you are still not sure go to Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Gryffindor 13:01, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I've sent e-mails to Dinkhauser, ÖVP and SPÖ now. Let's see whether we get some free images or not. —Nightstallion 13:13, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #19
The Hurricane Herald
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of July 2008.
Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.
Storm of the month
Hurricane Bertha was a rare early season Cape Verde-type hurricane and the easternmost forming July tropical storm on record. Bertha became the longest-lived pre-August Atlantic tropical cyclone on record and the longest-lived tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Basin since Ivan in 2004. The second named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, Bertha developed from a tropical wave that emerged off the coast of Africa on July 1. After initially remaining weak while tracking westward, Bertha began to strengthen on July 6, and the next day it quickly intensified to reach peak winds of 120 mph (195 km/h). The hurricane weakened during the day on July 8, and after turning to a northwest drift, it passed within 40 miles (64 km) of Bermuda on July 14 before moving northeast away from the island. Bertha became extratropical on July 20 to the east of Newfoundland, after causing minimal damage and three indirect drowning deaths.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- Northwestern Pacific Ocean – After several weeks of no activity, Typhoon Kalmaegi developed in the middle of the month, passing near northern Luzon before turning to the north and making landfalls on Taiwan and China; the typhoon caused heavy crop damage and 18 deaths. Later in the month, Typhoon Fung-Wong caused further flooding in Taiwan and China. In addition to the two named typhoons, PAGASA issued advisories on Tropical Depression Gener early in the month.
- Eastern Pacific Ocean – Four named storms developed in the basin during the month, of which three became hurricanes; Hurricanes Elida, Fausto, and Genevieve, as well as Tropical Storm Douglas, all remained offshore, though in the middle of the month a tropical depression brought rainfall to Mexico after hitting near Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. Hurricane Boris and Tropical Storm Cristina continued from the previous month.
- Atlantic Ocean– In addition to Hurricane Bertha, two other tropical cyclones developed in the month. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed off the coast of Florida, bringing rainfall and gusty winds to coastal North Carolina and later Nova Scotia. The most damaging Atlantic tropical cyclone during the month was Hurricane Dolly, which formed on July 20 in the western Caribbean Sea. After tracking northwestward through the Gulf of Mexico, it reached peak winds of 100 mph (155 km/h) before moving ashore on South Padre Island, Texas. The hurricane caused flash flooding from heavy rainfall, with damage in the United States estimated at $1.2 billion; across its path Dolly caused 21 deaths, including 17 from landslides in Guademala, as well as two indirect fatalities.
Member of the month
The July member of the month is User:Plasticup. Joining the project in August of 2007, Plasticup first became an asset in working on the active article series on Hurricane Dean. After a period of inactivity, the user returned to produce two featured articles this month, both interesting meteorological histories. Additionally, Plasticup has focused some attention to articles in the 2005 season. Keep up the good work!

Project News
During July, there were two large changes to the operations of the WikiProject. First, WPTC adopted and helped develop the WP 1.0 B-Class criteria, and was among the first projects to use a "forced" B-Class rubric as part of their assessment schemes. This means that all the articles tagged with
are automatically reassessed as C-Class, unless all the values in the checklist are marked as passed. In other words, to mark an article as B-Class, the banner needs to be changed to

B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and B6 stand for each of the six points in the WikiProject's rubric. The banner also has the capability to mark why an article doesn't meet the new B-Class standards: Typing the following in an article's talk page

will assess an article as C-Class, and mark that the article is not a B because of bad references.
Articles assessed as B's before the introduction of the forced checklist were automatically reassessed as C's, but they're awaiting new reviews to check if they still meet the new B criteria. These articles are listed on Category:Tropical cyclone articles with incomplete B-Class checklists. Currently, there's 117 articles in the category—let's try to shrink that number to zero before the next edition of the Herald!
The other major change to the WikiProject was the addition of three task forces: the storm articles task force, season articles task force, and the tropical meteorology articles task force. These three task forces allow WPTC to see the progress of the different areas of the WikiProject. Currently, all 1,076 WPTC articles have been assigned to one of the three task forces, but any unsorted articles will be placed in Category:Unsorted tropical cyclone articles as they're tagged with hurricane
.
In order to categorize an article, the banner needs to be modified from ...
to:

which will sort the pages into the storms, seasons, and tropical meteorology task forces, respectively.

Estonian United Left Party
You asked me to see what dates the [7] newspost mentions. Its first sentences can be translated as "On 11-13 July 2008, the Estonian United Left Party organized its summer days (or offsite brainstorm+recreation for an organization, usually in the countryside - Ahtih) on the shore of Peipsi lake in Uusküla, so that the members of two united parties could meet each other. About a hundred people participated from both parties that joined their forces on 28 June". So the 28 June date seems to be correct. Myself I do not follow media much and have not even heard of the existence of either of the parties! Ahtih (talk) 08:44, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for clearing the date up -- so I suppose that means the merger did take place. Thanks a lot! —Nightstallion 10:50, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Austrian election
The election seems to be very exciting, isn't it? Many parties, many important comebacks (Schmidt, Haider...)! What I don't understant is why FPÖ and LIF are so low in the polls... I thought that with Haider and Schmidt they would easily surpass the thresholds... In general, what is your forecast as of mid August? --Checco (talk) 16:29, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, Schmidt isn't that well-known among the younger population, and the BZÖ (not FPÖ) and Haider are mostly only popular in Carinthia... I suspect the SPÖ slightly in front of the ÖVP, FPÖ slightly under 20, Greens around 12.5, BZÖ around 5, LIF very around 3.5 and Dinkhauser around 4. —Nightstallion 20:46, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry if I wrote by mistake FPÖ in place of BZÖ. I was referring to the latter, off course. Thank you for the information and let me know if something important happens. For now, I would like to help you to improve the article about the election. I posted a message there... --Checco (talk) 20:51, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Would LIF get any seats at the regional or constituency level with 3.5%? --Checco (talk) 20:52, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Highly unlikely, they'd need over 20% in Vienna... —Nightstallion 20:54, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Let's hope that that 3.5% becomes 4%, then... --Checco (talk) 20:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Maybe you did not read the post above... can you upload the two logos? --Checco (talk) 17:14, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, sorry. Sure, I can, but why don't you do it? It's not difficult. :) —Nightstallion 10:05, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

- Actually I don't see the two logos in the articles. Where are the images you uploaded? --Checco (talk) 12:00, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- That's because I meant "yes, I can, but why don't you?"; I've done it now, though. —Nightstallion 12:14, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- Now you know why. I don't ask when I am able to do it by myself. For example I did not ask you anymore of translating those articles from de.Wiki, as I tried to do it alone, using s good Italian source and Google.translate. Thank you so much, anyway. --Checco (talk) 12:21, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

EU inclusion in lists of countries
Hey Nightstallion, have you checked out Talk:European_Union/inclusion_in_lists_of_countries since the debate was concluded?72.27.24.167 (talk) 18:05, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Could you please remove the posters now- the consensus on the talk page is clear. J Milburn (talk) 12:16, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'd still like to find a compromise solution (like the one I proposed), but if that's not possible, I accept that I'll have to give in. —Nightstallion 12:26, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- Searching for a compromise is fine- the images do not have to be in the article while we search for it. The consensus seems to be that one for each party is fine, and the one that is retained needs to be smaller in size. After they have been removed, we can continue to discuss the possibility of another compromise. J Milburn (talk) 12:29, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Fair use images
I'm a little alarmed that you're an administrator and so obviously unfamiliar with this (major) area of our encyclopedia, and so I thought I'd just remind you of a few of our policies. Firstly, all non-free media need a fair use rationales- you've uploaded some images without them, such as this. Also note that these rationales need to be fairly detailed, and so, for instance, the rationale you have provided here is pretty shoddy. It's also worth noting that images need a licensing tag, and should be deleted if one is not provided- an edit like this, when not providing a licensing tag and especially when not providing an edit summary is a massive no-no, and I know for a fact that if I saw someone doing that, I would be undoing with an angry edit summary, and if it was done again, I would be on their talk page explaining the issue and threatening to block if they continued to remove tags without addressing the tag's concerns. After taking a cursory glance through your upload log and seeing the awful way that you were abusing (and even trying to defend abuse of) fair use images on Austrian legislative election, 2008 I would, if I was eligible, (I'm not in the category myself) be calling for the recall of your admin privileges, and that's something I've never even considered before. I do not have an issue with admins having no experience in the field (I know and respect a lot of admins who hate dealing with images) but failing to correctly use non-free images on even the most simplistic level is really not acceptable. I recommend you take a thorough read of our guidelines on non-free content and are much, much more careful with uploading and using non-free content in future. J Milburn (talk) 16:56, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks for the warning. Let it be noted, though, that the restrictions surrounding non-free images tightened extremely a while after I became an administrator, and as I never really dealt too much with that area of Wikipedia I did not want to have to keep up with the rather rapid changes that seemed (to me) to be coming weekly; as it seems that the guidelines for fair use are set in stone now (not that I necessarily agree with them, but my bad luck), I'll try to keep up. Thanks again. —Nightstallion 20:58, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Your uploads
Good day. I see that you have uploaded a number of images to Wikipedia. First off, thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, there are some guidelines that we need to follow with copyrighted images. Specifically, you need to add a source for the image (a link to a website will do), a copyright tag (there are some listed at WP:ICT), and a rationale explaining why we can use a copyrighted image (explained at WP:NFURG). I see that your images fail to include one of these. Please stop uploading images and address the concerns listed above. If you need assistance, you can ask at the help desk. If you do not fix these images, and you continue to make bad uploads, you will be blocked and your images will be deleted. Thanks for your contributions! STBotI (talk) 10:34, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Elections
that's unfortunate, the only best bet you have is to try to take some pictures (of election posters with no photo of a person) and upload them on the Commons [8], or try to go to a party events or have a friend or so try to take some pictures. Gryffindor 11:40, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

List of EU states by accession
I just found out that the page List of European Union member states by accession is removed and replaced by sections on Enlargement of the EU and Future EU Enlargement. But I can not find big parts of the original page (the bottom table, much of the text for future prospects and failed enlargements), additionaly I prefer the common page as it was before... I see that there has passed much time after the removal with no action from your side. On the talk page there is no big discussion about it, only 2-4 comments (big, but not much in number). Is there any procedure/policy/whatever that we can engage so that this useful page is restored? (or at least ALL of its contents)? Alinor (talk) 15:01, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- shrugs I've got a copy at User:Nightstallion/List of European Union member states by accession, but apart from that, I don't really know. —Nightstallion 17:50, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
- I restored it and added some comments on the discussion page. Please check if the version, that I have restored to, is the most recent one (or just update it). Alinor (talk) 20:49, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- uf, they deleted it again... and stating "no information is lost"?!? Anyway, I will try to merge the two tables as described in my post on the discussion page - and I hope that then maybe more people will be happy with the article and stick to non-removal... - Good luck... —Nightstallion 08:18, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #20
Number 20, September 6, 2008
The Hurricane Herald
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of August 2008.
Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.
Storm of the month
Hurricane Gustav was a deadly and damaging hurricane which formed late in the month in the Caribbean Sea. It first struck Haiti on August 26 as a minimal hurricane, where it killed 76 people and damaged or destroyed over 10,000 houses. Gustav turned to the southwest, moving over Jamaica where it killed 11 people. The hurricane rapidly intensified to reach peak winds of 150 mph (240 km/h) before making landfall on western Cuba; in the country, Gustav damaged or destroyed over 100,000 houses, though no deaths were reported due to well-executed evacuations. In the Gulf of Mexico, Gustav weakened due to its previous land interaction, and on September 1 it made landfall in south-central Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane, where it caused heavy damage. Across its path, the hurricane caused 101 deaths, with an initial damage total of $20 billion.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- Atlantic Ocean– In addition to Gustav, three other tropical cyclones formed. Early in the month, Tropical Storm Edouard caused light damage when it moved ashore along Texas. In the middle of the month, Tropical Storm Fay formed over Hispaniola and later crossed over Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico; throughout the Caribbean it caused 25 deaths. Fay struck southwestern Florida, moved across the state, turned to the west, and moved across the Florida panhandle, making a record four landfalls on the state. The storm dropped 27.65 inches (702.1 mm) of rain in Melbourne, making Fay the fourth wettest Florida tropical cyclone. In the end of the month, Hurricane Hanna formed northeast of the Lesser Antilles; its impact will be covered in the next month's summary.
- Eastern Pacific Ocean – Four named storms developed in the basin during the month, including Tropical Storm Kika, which was the first Central Pacific tropical cyclone since Ioke in 2006. Hurricane Hernan was the strongest hurricane of the month in the basin, reaching Category 3 status while remaining away from land. Tropical Storm Iselle lasted for a few days, but did not affect land. Tropical Storm Julio made landfall on Baja California Sur, producing heavy rainfall and causing two deaths.
- Northwestern Pacific Ocean – The month began with Tropical Storm Kammuri forming and hitting southern China; the storm killed 140 people, mostly in neighboring Vietnam, and damage totaled $120 million (USD). Tropical Storms Phanfone and Vongfone lasted for a few days out at sea, before Typhoon Nuri formed and struck northern Luzon, causing 12 deaths.
- 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season – A depression formed and struck Odisha.
Member of the month
The August member of the month is Cyclonebiskit, who has been on Wikipedia since April. The user helped maintain the current season articles as well as storm articles. Cyclonebiskit has written one GA, and wrote much of one of the recent tropical cyclone articles.

Version 0.7
This month, several of the WikiProject's articles were selected for the Version 1.0 Editorial Team's Version 0.7 static release. The article selection occurs using an automated process using WikiProjects' quality and importance assessments. For WPTC, this means that 29 articles will be part of this release, an increase from 13 in the previous release. It should be noted that these numbers are based on preliminary data that can change based on updates to the database and corrections to the selection algorithm and WP:1.0's cut-off score.
The list of articles chosen for the release can be seen here. Of the selection, almost half of the articles are already featured, and eleven are good articles. There one B-Class article (1970 Bhola cyclone, two C-Class articles (Hurricane Andrew, Cyclone Nargis), and two Start-Class articles (Pacific typhoon, Hurricane Rita). As these articles will be published in a CD, it is imperative that the project improve them quickly.
The full list of all the WikiProject's articles is also available here. According to that list, WPTC's highest-scoring article—Tropical cyclone—has a score of 1969, which is very good as Canada, the selection's highest-scoring article, has a score of 2,409. That said, Extreme wind warning is the least important article we have, with a score of 227, so we may have to improve it a little bit so it isn't that low...

Image copyright problem with Image:ECOWAS Flag.png
Thanks for uploading Image:ECOWAS Flag.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

I noticed that in the posters the Freedom Party of Austria is described as die Soziale Heimatpartei. Does this reflect an actual change in party ideology since the departure of Haider and his Alliance for the Future of Austria? It is correct to say that it has transformed from a nationalist/national-liberal party into a nationalist/national-conservative party, while Haider's party is a nationalist/national-liberal party? --Checco (talk) 13:22, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
- Not at all. The "third camp" (drittes Lager, = FPÖ and BZÖ and sympathisants) has always designated itself as patriotic (=nationalist) and social, and Haider continues to do so. You'll find next to no liberal ideas in either of the two parties programs. —Nightstallion 13:48, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
- But, is it correct to say that since the takeover of Haider in 1986 the party tried to woo the working class? In a book I'm reading the authors write that until 1986 the party'support was based on the middle class... So we can say that now both parties support a mix of populist and neo-liberal policies. Is that correct? --Checco (talk) 13:52, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
- Before Haider, the FPÖ mainly consisted of former Nazis and sympathisants (majority) and liberals/reformists (minority). With Haider in the lead, the reformists left together with Schmidt in 1993 and the party began to reorient itself as a populist "party of the little/simple man" (Partei des kleinen Mannes). Neo-liberal... Well, the BZÖ a bit, the FPÖ not at all, I suppose. The FPÖ is a bit more xenophobic, but all together, both of them want to keep the "big bad globalisation" away from the "simple citizens". —Nightstallion 13:58, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, that is also my personal view. Thanks and sorry for my frequent questions. --Checco (talk) 14:00, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

National Alliance
I'm very sorry for bothering you. An IP continues to revert my edits to National Alliance (Italy), despite I have long accepted many things he asked me to insert (a section about some remarks of AN senior members, more sources and [citation needed]s). Particularly he continues to delete sourced statements and to insert "cryptofascism" as the party's ideology. I'm looking for your help as an administrator. I think that all his last edit is to be reverted, but if you are able to find a better compromise than the last version I edited it's fine for me. --Checco (talk) 14:52, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Your protection of fascist lies
The National Alliance (Italy) is a fascist party, please stop protecting their lies. To describe this party as "conservative" is beyond a joke given recent statements by its leadership.[10] --84.65.193.186 (talk) 15:06, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Faroe update
The Faroese coalition government has fallen apart. Future unclear. Haukur (talk) 15:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- Over the tunnel issue? What are the most likely possibilities, early elections or a new coalition? Thanks for the update! —Nightstallion 16:06, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- Over a lot of things - the final straw was some seemingly quite petty issue over the use of an office building. I haven't seen early elections discussed - I think we're just going to get the usual poker game where they try to form a new coalition with the existing parliament. Currently looks like a unionist coalition is more likely. Haukur (talk) 18:30, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- Meh. Does that mean the constitutional referendum is cancelled, too? —Nightstallion 08:29, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- Good question, I haven't seen that addressed. Currently, negotiations are taking place between Javnaðarflokkurin, Fólkaflokkurin and Sambandsflokkurin. Haukur (talk) 08:51, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- Wasn't that just the coalition which was in office before the election...? That would be a moderately unionist coalition then, as Fólkafl. is pro-independence? —Nightstallion 09:02, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Catholic social teaching
"Christian social" does not mean too much: in some contexts (Italy) it is a synonim for "Christian leftist", in some others (Germany) it has a more conservative meaning. Catholic social teaching includes all the Church's views about the man and life, notably inclunding opposition to abortion, opposition to euthanasia, opposition to gay rights and so on. I don't know what are the ideological differences between Austrian parties, but it is defintely incorrect to link any party to Catholic social teaching because it is not an ideology and it is probably supported more convincingly by the chirstian-conservative The Christians. I have no ideas about what link we should use instead, but, from a Catholic point of view, it is fairly incorrect to distinguish the three Catholic-inspired parties of Austria on Catholic social teaching. It is probably a source of inspiration for all three. The fact that the Catholic doctrine is labelled "social" does not mean anything more than it is the Catholic teaching regarding society. Esepcially if FITZ is "Christian-social" in the sense that it is to the left of the People's Party, we should use something very different as link because the Catholic social teaching is the traditional (and in some way conservative) teaching of the Church, not its progressive incarnation. --Checco (talk) 14:24, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
For similar reasons, as conservative Christianity is a theological current of Christianity and not an ideology, I would replace Christian conservative with Christian conservative, Christian conservative or Social conservative. All these links are not perfect, but they are far more precise than the one which is currently used to describe The Christians. --Checco (talk) 14:44, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- Good points, okay. —Nightstallion 15:30, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for listening to my remarks. I like the changes you made to the article, even if I would have probably chose Christian conservative for The Christians, but I understand that religious right can be misleading American. What do you think about it? --Checco (talk) 08:29, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Great! If you have some time I would like to ask you about the election itself. Looking at the polls it seems that at least six parties will enter the National Council. In that case, with these poll numbers, what would be the most plausible coalitions? --Checco (talk) 08:38, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not all that sure the LIF will make it, but I hope so. Either way, the only possible coalitions are either SPÖ-ÖVP (highly likely), ÖVP-FPÖ-BZÖ (possible, but unlikely) or SPÖ-FPÖ-BZÖ (very unlikely). The Greens will never work together with FPÖ or BZÖ, SPÖ-GRÜNE-LIF doesn't have a majority even if LIF makes it into parliament. An SPÖ minority government could also happen, but I doubt Faymann would choose that over a grand coalition, so I expect we'll get more of the same. —Nightstallion 08:44, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- Interesting. A grand coalition is a very strange outcome, also because the last one failed, leading the country to the polls again. Anyway, I understand that with that rise of the extremes (I noticed that Haider experienced a rise in the polls) it is very difficult to form a government. How are so popular Strache's and Haider's parties? Austria is well-know for its consensus-oriented policies, but now also for having the largest far-right...
- Regarding the other issue, would you accept Christian conservative? --Checco (talk) 08:50, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- The Austrian preference for grand coalition stems from the time after the war, when the socialists and the Christian democrats (= the employees and the employers, the so-called Sozialpartnerschaft, "social partnership") had to work together to rebuild Austria and establish its place in the world. Especially in wage negotiations, the result was often negotiated before the political parties even started to get involved, as the employers and the unions presented their compromise result to the parties.
- The rise of the right is mostly attributable to Haider's brand of xenophobic populism, which Strache has copied perfectly. The grand coalition parties are doing little to argue against the idiotic tirades of the right that foreigners are destroying Austrian culture, are all criminals, steal our jobs, ... (slightly exaggerated, but very much along those lines). People who're afraid tend to vote for parties with simple solutions (there was a study about that recently -- people were shown frightening images; those who were less afraid were more likely to vote for liberal and social parties, while those who were more easily scared tended to vote for conservative and nationalist parties), and people are disillusioned with the two big parties due to the failure of this coalition (mostly due to the ÖVP's obstruction, if you ask me) so that's where the ~25% for the right-wing parties come from. —Nightstallion 08:56, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- Regarding the link... Maybe you're right, fair enough. —Nightstallion 08:59, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- I understand. I'm often sick of Italian politics, but in this case I feel lucky that Italian mainstream centre-right and centre-left parties, with all their highs and lows, are very good at avoiding the rise of exremist parties... Coming back to Austria, I think that the best would be a government coalition with only one of the two big parties. In this way the extremes could loose votes (as actually happend with Haider's party in 2002) and a sort of bipolarism could emerge. Do you agree with me? Do you think that Austria need some electoral reform? --Checco (talk) 09:06, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- Well, the rest of Europe would argue that both communists and AN/LN are extremists, but I know Italians tend to see that differently. Either way, I'd prefer a coalition with only one of the two big parties, too, yeah. I don't think electoral reform is necessary, but I would like a chance to a system in which voters can actually decide which candidates from a party they'd like to see elected -- while Austria currently *does* have a system of preferential votes, it's never had any effect so far. I also wouldn't be opposed to MMP or another mixed system, but I don't think it's necessary. —Nightstallion 09:11, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- I personally think that the electoral system is part of the Austria's problem since it does not make easy for alternative parties/coalitions to compete for government. In this sens I feel that a new grand coalition is a sort of failure of the system. In what sense Austria has a system of preferential votes but it has never had any effetc so far?
- The difference between AN/LN and Austrian far-right parties is that AN/LN are not only perceived as mainstream parties, but that they have a coherent set of principles and policies and in fact especially LN tends to be very popular in government and thus to gain more votes thanks to incumbency. As a slogan, I would say that Austrian far-right parties are protest parties uneasy with governemt, while AN/LN (although very different between them) are government-fit parties.
- There is a system of preferential votes for the regional and state constituencies, but due to the high amount of preference votes required for it to have an effect on the order of candidates, it's never had an effect as far as I can remember.
- Well, that may be the case, yeah. —Nightstallion 09:23, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for your precious explanation. We'll see what happens next Sunday and after... --Checco (talk) 09:27, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Images' licensing
I have some problems with images' licensing. A bot removed the symbols of Liga Veneta and Lega Lombarda from Lega Nord's article. The problem is that the images of the "national" (=regional) sections of the party are both owened and used by the "national" sections and the federal party itself. Do you know how can I explain this in the images' pages and to fix the problem? --Checco (talk) 08:07, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Austrian legislative election, 2008
I was just wondering why the above-referenced article refers to the poll having "closed" when the election is scheduled for this coming Sunday. I changed it "close", but you reverted me, so I figured you could tell me. -Rrius (talk) 09:31, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's not a big thing, it's just that the article is already written looking onto it from after the election (to save me the prospect of having to go through 250 KiB changing all the tenses from present to past), but if you prefer to have that one sentence in present tense for now, I've got no problem with it. —Nightstallion 09:44, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

- More than 200 KiB, I think.
- And you can't imagine how upset I am about the result. —Nightstallion 10:40, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- Know what u mean...international finance is in meltdown, far-right parties have over 30% of the seats in Austria (ouch!), the Irish are nitpicking Lisbon to death, the House Republicans just shat on the bill because - hey - it's not like it's important or anything, the third biggest bank in Iceland just flatlined, and Paul Newman just died. It's usually the sign of a cultured mind to start quoting Yeats at this point ("...things cannot hold..."), but I find impersonating Egon from Ghostbusters ("...basically, all the worst parts of the Bible...") works just as well (altho you have to do it very, very, deadpan). Storm of the month
Hurricane Ike was among the costliest Atlantic hurricanes on record, based on a preliminary damage estimate of $31.5 billion (USD). The ninth named storm, fifth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2008 season, Ike developed on September 1 in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Maintaining a generally westward track throughout its duration, Ike reached Category 4 status on the Saffir-Simpson scale, moving across the Turks and Caicos Islands at that intensity before weakening and crossing Cuba; heavy damage was reported in Cuba, which was still recovering from Hurricane Gustav just weeks prior. Gustav later moved across the Gulf of Mexico and struck near Galveston, Texas, where its effects were estimated as the costliest hurricane in Texas history. Further inland, the storm brought high winds and widespread damage, and its impact reached as far as Canada. Throughout its path, Gustav caused over 100 deaths, mostly in Texas and Haiti, and several hundred remain missing.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- Atlantic Ocean– In addition to Ike, two hurricanes from the previous month, Gustav and Hanna, lasted into September, both striking the United States. Tropical Storm Josephine formed while Ike and Hanna were active; it remained away from land and dissipated four days after forming. The tropics were quiet in the Atlantic for about 10 days after Ike dissipated, until Hurricane Kyle formed north of Hispaniola; its precursor brought heavy rains to the Greater Antilles, and Kyle ultimately became extratropical as it moved into Atlantic Canada. At the end of the month, Tropical Storm Laura formed from a subtropical cyclone far away from land; it persisted until early October, when it lost tropical characteristics to the southeast of Newfoundland.
- Eastern Pacific Ocean– The month in the eastern Pacific Ocean was the quietest on record, in terms of ACE index. Early in the month, Tropical Storm Karina lasted for two days without affecting land. A few days later, Tropical Storm Lowell formed and later affected the Baja California peninsula and mainland Mexico as a tropical depression; its remnants merged with the remnants of Ike.
- Western Pacific Ocean– Five named storms developed in the western Pacific, beginning with Typhoon Sinlaku which became a powerful cyclone before weakening and bringing heavy rainfall to Taiwan; there, it caused 11 deaths and heavy damage, and it later affected Japan. The second storm of the month was Typhoon Hagupit, which caused $1 billion (USD) in damage and 68 deaths when it struck China. Typhoon Jangmi was next, which brought further damage and deaths to Taiwan. Two more tropical storms developed during the month; Mekkhala formed in the South China Sea and caused heavy damage in Vietnam, while Higos moved across the Philippines and later struck China.
- North Indian Ocean– One deep depression formed during the month, which moved ashore in the Indian province of Odisha; it caused 25 deaths from heavy rainfall.
Member of the month
The September member of the month is CrazyC83, who has been a steady editor within the project for the past few years. Lately, the user's contributions include maintaining the current season articles, which is the biggest workload for the project. In the past, however, CrazyC83 was very active in writing articles, and was a proponent for all storms in the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season getting articles. Of note was his contributions to Hurricane Juan, which brought it to featured status and later to the main page.

Project News
Overall, the project has had a relatively uneventful month. One of the most noteworthy events was the selection of 32 tropical cyclone-related articles, that were chosen as part of Wikipedia 0.7. Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. While many of the selected articles are of featured or good quality, several require substantial cleanup and expansion.
In other news, a handful of changes to project standards have taken place. Per a consensus on the project's talk page, the section of each tropical cyclone article previously entitled "Storm history" has been changed to "Meteorological history", thanks in part to Plasticup's bot which preformed the hundreds of edits to execute the change. In addition, a discussion is ongoing regarding the necessity of List of storms in the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, and similar articles for other seasons.

Sorry, I can't keep up with this stuff very well because I don't use a watchlist and sometimes I forget to check on things. No, he's only designated as Prime Minister; hasn't been sworn in. It's not even 100% clear that the deal is going to hold and his swearing in is going to happen, considering the difficulties they're having in deciding on a Cabinet. Everyking (talk) 19:09, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- nods Just wanted to check. I'll try to keep other users from prematurely swearing him in. —Nightstallion 19:41, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Cactions tool
Nightstallion, just to inform you, I've released a long-overdue upgrade to the cactions tool, which you should be able to see already (Ctrl-F5 if not). The tool should still work just as before, although you no longer need the ctIsAdmin variable; see User:Haza-w/Caction tool for the documentation. If you find any bugs or have any queries or feature requests, please get in touch. Thanks, and enjoy! haz (talk) 20:07, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
State governments
Hi Nightstallion. Is this correct? Was Haider supported by the Social Democrats? How was that possible? What kind of agreement the two parties had? Reading de.Wiki, I understood that many States are governed by three-party coalition, including the Social Democrats, the People's Party and the Freedom Party (or the Greens or, in the case of Carinthia, Haider's party). Why this happens?
If all of this is correct, Nordsieck's website is completely wrong. We should write to Nordsieck and tell him to correct that page...
Do you know where I can find the composition of Austrian State governments since 1945? --Checco (talk) 18:37, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, but it's completely different. Half the Austrian states (five of nine) have a system called Proporz (roughly equals "proportionality"), under which all parties are assigned a number of offices in the state government according to their voting share. This has nothing to do with who actually governs (for instance, in Upper Austria there's an ÖVP-Green government, but the SPÖ nonetheless has to have their share of state ministerial offices). Regarding state governments since 1945, sorry, I don't really know. —Nightstallion 18:48, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- So, Nordsieck is correct (but where did he got that data? how can I understand who is actually part of the goverment and who has only ministerial offices?)... and why in Carinthia, only the Social Democrats have ministerial posts and the People's Party not? --Checco (talk) 18:49, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- Nordsieck is absolutely correct, and even identifies the Proporz states with "proportional" in the government line; BTW, Vienna is a special case, as it's de iure proportional, but the non-SPÖ state ministers do not have actual functions.
- Well, it's quite easy -- those parties which are governing together are the government, of course...
- Because the ÖVP is barely even in existence in Carinthia. —Nightstallion 18:52, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, but how can I can distinguish a party is part of the government from a party which simply holds ministerial offices? Nordsieck does not tell that Upper Austria has an ÖVP-Green government... --Checco (talk) 18:54, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- shrugs They signed a coalition agreement, they are passsing laws together, the SPÖ is railing against them. I think it's pretty clear who's in government and who's in opposition. —Nightstallion 19:02, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, but for an non-Austrian doing some research in the Internet... thanks, anyway! --Checco (talk) 19:08, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Italian Social Movement
Hi Nightstallion, I would like to make you think abou moving Italian Social Movement–National Right to Italian Social Movement. Even if MSI-DN was the official name during the last years of existance of the party, no-one in Italy actually refers to the party as MSI-DN but simply as MSI.
I think it is the typical case of Wikipedia:Most common name: in fact many Italian political parties have or had complicate and long names, but they are or were referred to simply with the shortened name. Examples? For current parties: the Italian Radicals, whose complete name would be "Italian Radicals. Liberal, Liberist and Libertarian Movement, Constituent Member of the Transnational Radical Party", Union of Christian and Centre Democrats, which should be "Union of Christian Democrats and Centre Democrats", Democratic Left, whose complete name would be "Democratic Left. For Socialism", and Lega Nord, which sould be "Lega Nord for the Independence of Padania". For former parties/coalition: The Olive Tree, which was actually named "The Olive Tree–Together for Italy" and Republican Left, whose complete name should have been "Republican Left–Republicans for the Unity of the Democratic Left". --Checco (talk) 10:13, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Mh. Maybe...
- BTW, regarding the above: The ÖVP does have one member of government. —Nightstallion 15:26, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, even I noticed that the People's Party has a member of the Carinthian government. Thanks.
- Regarding the MSI, what does "maybe" mean? Is it something we can discuss and decide together? --Checco (talk) 17:25, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Iceland/EU update
Latest poll shows 68.8% in favor of applying for EU-membership.[11] I still think the current parliament has no mandate to apply for membership and will not do so. - Anyway, could you elaborate on your Macedonia views?BalkanFever 10:40, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I think Greece is being a bit ridiculous about the name issue, and I condemn the Greek government's attempts to neglect the existence of Slavic-speaking minorities in northern Greece, but at the same time I don't see what big damage is done if Macedonia calls itself Northern Macedonia instead if it's such a big deal to the Greeks. —Nightstallion 16:13, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have no problem with "Northern Macedonia" for the country name either, but Greece does not recognise the existence of the Macedonian ethnicity. If "Northern Macedonia" were the name of the state, I guess the citizens in general would be "Northern Macedonians", but the majority ethnic group must remain "Macedonians" (or "ethnic Macedonians", even "Slavic Macedonians" if disambiguation is really needed) as this is what they call themselves. Similarly, the Macedonian language cannot become "Northern Macedonian" (who speaks "Southern Macedonian"?). That is where the problem lies. BalkanFever 06:32, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- In a nutshell, country: Northern Macedonia, citizens: Northern Macedonians, main ethnic group and language: Slav(o)Macedonian(s). I think Greece would accept that. Why won't Skopje? ·ΚΕΚΡΩΨ· 11:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

- This is what I think. Tito saw that he had to do something to make sure the Bulgarians in southern Yugoslavia wouldn’t try to secede. So the Macedonian identity was created along with a wealth of pseudohistory about a Slavic Macedonian identity. To the Greeks it really comes down to protecting their own cultural identity. The perception is that an entire country is attempting to historically align itself with an ancient Hellenic state, which is had nothing to do with. – Zntrip 01:31, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- In my opinion, that may well be the fact, but it is also a fact that the Macedonians now largely self-identify in that way, and seeing as how nearly *ALL* historic reference-taking is utter bullshit, I don't really mind who claims to be descended from the Macedons of old... ;) Protecting cultural identity is nice and all, but I don't really see where the big problem lies with having two regions with the same name (see Luxembourg and Luxembourg, for instance, and loads of similar examples). Either way, Northern Macedonia seems to be a viable compromise for the country name. —Nightstallion 09:31, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #22
Number 22, November 2, 2008
The Hurricane Herald
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of October 2008.
Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.
Storm of the month
Deep Depression ARB 02 caused the 2008 Yemen floods. On October 19 the IMD noted that an area of low pressure which located to the south east of Salalah, Oman had intensifed in to a tropical depression and was assigned the number ARB 02. On October 21 IMD updated the system to a Deep Depression while it lay 700 km south of Salalah, Oman near the east coast of Somalia. It lost its strength while crossing the Gulf of Aden due to entry of dry air and land interaction as it passed close to the northeastern coast of Somalia. It later was downgraded to a Depression, named TC 03B by the JTWC. On October 24 it made landfall on the south-eastern coast of Yemen, leaving at least 26 civilians and six soldiers dead while trapping hundreds of people due to flooding and torrential rainfalls. The latest figure of casualties is of 184 persons dead and 100 others missing, mostly from the region of Hadhramawt, where the storm made landfall. A total of 733 houses were destroyed in the governorates of Hadhramaut and Al Mahrah, while 22,000 people were displaced. The Yemeni Government declared the two aforementioned governorates as disaster zones.
Other tropical cyclone activity
- Atlantic Ocean– In the Atlantic, four tropical cyclones formed this October. Tropical Storm Marco formed in the Bay of Campeche on October 6. It made landfall on October 8 and is one of the smallest Atlantic tropical cyclones since 1988. Tropical Storm Nana formed October 12 in the middle of the open Atlantic. It had no impact anywhere and dissipated October 14. Hurricane Omar formed October 13 and dissipated October 18. Eventually peaking as a Category 4 hurricane, Omar passed through the Lesser Antilles twice, including once near peak intensity. Fortunately, it caused only one indirect death. Tropical Depression Sixteen formed on October 16 and dissipated two days later after making landfall. It killed 16 to 20 people in Central America.
- Eastern Pacific Ocean– In the eastern north Pacific, three tropical cyclones formed this October. Hurricane Norbert formed October 3 and dissipated October 12. The strongest storm thus far this season, Norbert is the first hurricane to strike the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula since 1968. Eight deaths have been blamed on the hurricane.. Tropical Storm Odile formed October 8 and paralleled the coast of Mexico before dissipating on October 12. Tropical Depression Seventeen-E formed on October 23 and dissipated the next day without impacting land.
- Western Pacific Ocean– In the western north Pacific, two tropical cyclones formed. Tropical Storm Bavi formed October 18 in the open Pacific. It never came near land and dissipated three days later. Tropical Depression Twenty Two-W formed on October 13 in the Gulf of Tonkin and made landfall on October 15. It dissipated inland the next day.
- North Indian– In the northern Indian Ocean, two cyclones formed. Besides Deep Depression ARB 02, which caused flooding that killed 184 people in Yemen, Cyclonic Storm Rashmi formed October 25 and made landfall three days later. It killed two people.
- South-West Indian – The 2008-09 South West Indian Ocean Season got off to an early start with two pre season zones of disturbed weather. The first zone of disturbed weather formed on October 6 and did not develop any further. Whilst the second zone of disturbed weather formed on October 16 and developed in to Moderate Tropical Storm Asma.

Project News
A discussion concerning sandboxes for next year's articles has begun. Please consider working on sandboxes so they will be ready to publish. As tropical cyclones can form at any time in the western Pacific and northern Indian Oceans, these two season's should be made ready for cyclones by December. Ideally, due to the possibility of pre-season storms, the eastern Pacific and Atlantic seasons should also be ready by then, but they should at least be ready by the northern-Hemisphere antipeak in late February and early March. Seasons for the years 2010 to 2015 should be given the name "Post-2009 {ocean name} {cyclone term} seasons", as in "Post 2009 Atlantic hurricane seasons".
A category for tropical cyclone articles of very-low importance has been introduced. Although discussion is still ongoing, a rating of very-low-importance will generally be given to weak cyclones that do not have impact or set any sort of record.

Heya Nightstallion. I'm confused. Why was my (I admit, awful) early morning stub deleted? doktorb wordsdeeds 20:34, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- There was a longer article with a descriptive title (2008 proposed split from the ANC, something like that), and Toussaint had redirected your stub to this longer article; I moved the longer article to the currently proposed name and only saw that I'd be moving it over a redirect with some minor history, so I had no problems with deleting the redirect out of the way... Hope that's okay? —Nightstallion 08:45, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

National Union/NRP merger
Yes, I saw that, although only because User:Nudve added it to Moledet and a few other pages. Will be interesting to see what happens to Hatikva (political party), as that was only formed recently. Thankfully, the list is doing badly in the polls. пﮟოьεԻ 57 18:25, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Most of the polls are predicting a 60-60 tie between left and right - not sure who that's best for - I suspect slightly for the left, because the two options for coalitions are effectively Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu, National Union, UTJ and Shas on the right and Labor, Kadima, Meretz, Gil or the Greens and the Arab parties on the left. Although Arab parties are never included in coalitions, none of the "left" parties are likely to join the right-wing coalition, whilst Shas or UTJ could join a left-wing coalition for the right amount of money (increases in child support, which many of their voters live off because they don't work). Shas might be difficult due to their objections over Jerusalem, so it may come down to being a minority left-wing coalition supported by the Arab parties.
- As for Labor, basically they're ideologically bankrupt - Barak is widely regarded as a failure with no scruples (e.g. not resigning after the Winograd report), and there seems to be no socialist edge to the party now Peretz, Yachimovich and Braverman have been largely sidelined. They've also lost some major people like Efraim Sneh (who formed Yisrael Hazaka), and there are rumours that some of their Arab members could break away to form a new party too. If they got rid of Barak, got Ophir Pines-Paz (who resigned from the cabinet over Yisrael Beiteinu being added to the coalition) in charge and brought Peretz et al back to the fore, then they'd be rejuvenated, but I can't see it happening. пﮟოьεԻ 57 22:43, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Mh, too bad, I liked Labour most, from what I've read of Israeli politics. Well, no, actually, I suppose Meretz-Yachad is even more to my liking... But you think Kadima will be the ruling party again after the election? I'm afraid Likud might win and destroy most hopes of progress within the next few years... —Nightstallion 23:20, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Israeli poll
Not sure as to the reliability of the poll you just added, the main reason being that it gives a party one seat, which is impossible according to election rules (the electoral threshold equals two seats)... пﮟოьεԻ 57 22:34, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

No, no more details - its all very vague at the moment - it will be more of an umbrella group, led by Meretz, and including other very small parties - possibly Meimad, and a new Green Party (not the main one) - I guess it will be similar to the old Democratic Movement for Change which was formed around a core of the Shinui party, but attracted lots of others to it. Hopefully it'll do well - in any sane country Meretz would probably be the ruling party! пﮟოьεԻ 57 22:46, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hopefully it'll be more successful, yeah... I absolutely agree with you, but as I'm from Austria, I wouldn't really know how people in sane countries vote. sighs Anyway, could you be so kind as to let me know when there are any further developments with NU-NRP, the new left party or anything else? Thanks! —Nightstallion 22:50, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

PRC faction
The Ernesto is a faction within the PRC and The Ernesto article is about the faction. Unfortunately L'Ernesto is also a magazine and, despite the fact that the article is only about the faction, Soman has twice moved the article to L'Ernesto (Italian name). For uniformity with all the articles about Italian party factions I would like to have the article with the title translated in English. That's why I'm asking you to move the article to its original title. Obviously if Soman wants to create an article about the magazine he's free to do it. --Checco (talk) 18:52, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Kubilius
I trust your judgment, but where does your source say he's taking office on 27 November? I can't find it. Therequiembellishere (talk) 16:46, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- It says something like "the parliament will vote on him on Thursday", which is 27 November; the approval vote is the time when he takes office. —Nightstallion 16:49, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, I was looking specifically for "27 November". Thanks. Therequiembellishere (talk) 17:14, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- I just re-read it and it says, "The Seimas intends to vote for Kubilius' candidacy for the post of prime minister on Thursday. The 15th Government will start working after the Seimas approves the programme of the Government and ministers will make an oath." It sounds like the Thursday vote officially designates him Prime Minister, but his term doesn't being until they green light his Cabinet and swear him in. The headline itself only say the president has nominated him, not that he's the designate yet. This sounds like the similar problem with Barack Obama in that he is the "president-designate" until 12 December when the Electoral College formally vote and he becomes the "president-elect". Therequiembellishere (talk) 17:18, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- AFAIK, it's the same as in Slovenia, Haiti and many other countries -- parliament first votes on the PM, who immediately takes office upon being approved in parliament, then the PM has two weeks to get his government together, which is approved in a separate, second vote... PM-designate is not an official title or designation in many countries, so the presence or absence of those words needn't mean anything. —Nightstallion 08:02, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

New Israeli party
I'm going to wait and see how it develops - i.e. if they do actually run in the election - you tend to get fringe groups who threaten to run in order to try and get put on a list with a similar political orientation in order to avoid drawing away votes. пﮟოьεԻ 57 09:20, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Romanian legislative elections results
I will, but I taught that this time too the legally registered parties in Romania will be euphoric, and that would have enlarged the table more than necessary.
--ES Vic (talk) 18:57, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, the dozen parties are the 18 national minorities parties, and each have one seat. I find including all the 18 parties to be redundant. If there is a request on adding all the 18 parties, I will add them. but still, I find that useless!
Anyone know how many seats won by the PSD-PC list are of the Conservative Party and how many seats won by the PNL list are of the Christian Democratic Peasant Party? --Checco (talk) 09:13, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't know, no... —Nightstallion 17:33, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
New left-wing party
I very much doubt it would be today - Saturday is the Israeli version of Sunday. Tomorrow is a more realistic day for action as it's the first day of the week. пﮟოьεԻ 57 11:56, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, lots of parties have their party congresses and founding conventions on Sundays in the Christian-influenced world, too... Either way, have you read anything about the date or is that just an estimate? Thanks! —Nightstallion 11:58, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I hadn't heard anything about it TBH. The day of rest is taken a bit more seriously in Israel (especially if Meimad are involved - none of their members would be able to travel to the conference on a Shabbat). пﮟოьεԻ 57 12:02, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I figured that Meimad and others of the religious left might have a problem with that date... Thanks! —Nightstallion 12:05, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think this may be what you are after. I'd wait until it has a name before starting an article though. пﮟოьεԻ 57 02:27, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! Yeah, I'd likely have left creating the article to you either way, as you certainly know much more about Israeli politics than I do. ;) —Nightstallion 09:44, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Ghana election template
Be very careful in naming the template.
Right now it says
The |Ghana presidential election, 2004| means that the >edit< link you see on pages where the template is links to the 2004 template. You need to put the actual template name there.
It needs to say
Ghanaian presidential election, 2008Summary of the 7 December and 28 December 2008 Ghanaian presidential election results
Thanks--Petrovic-Njegos (talk) 20:08, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry, that's one of the most common mistakes I make when copying templates from existing ones. —Nightstallion 09:38, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Next Ukrainian parliamentary election in 2011? Might ass well be 2009...
First thanks for your input on Next Ukrainian parliamentary election! Unfortunately you seem to suffer from logic thinking (hence your last edit there when you claim elections will prob. be in 2011). As a follower of Ukrainian politics since the Orange Revolution I can tell you that Ukrainian politics is anything but logical in fact Lytvyn Bloc isn't even member if the coalition yet (see [12]) a important fact that most western journalist seem to miss... . If you want to keep updated about Ukrainian politics read http://www.ukranews.com/eng or http://www.unian.net/eng cause Western newspaper constantly interpreted Ukrainian political events wrong too... Most of them can't even write Tymoskenko right... (it's not Timoshenko cause the Ukrainian alphabet get's transcribed differently to Latin alphabet then the Russian alphabet (tell all your friends :) )). Regards, Mariah-Yulia (talk) 23:48, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
P.S. For example see this: [13] article. Only 40 from the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense Bloc faction (out of 72) voted to make Volodymyr Lytvyn Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, without the 27 from the Communist Party faction (who will not be part of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense Bloc + BYuT + Lytvyn Bloc coalition) MR. Lytvyn wouldn't have been elected chairman, hardle a stabble coalition (that Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense bloc faction + BYut + Lytvin Bloc coalition). If you ask me it would be close to a miracle if they make 2011 without a snap election, but on the other hand that is logic thinking and like I said before in my eyes Ukrainian politics is anything but logic... -- Mariah-Yulia (talk) 00:49, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
- Fair enough, but still, the article should be updated... —Nightstallion 09:39, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
- Done :) -- Mariah-Yulia (talk) 13:20, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Requested move
Hi Nightstallion, can you move Venetian Autonomy League to Lega Autonomia Veneta for uniformity with Lega Nord, Lega Alleanza Lombarda, Liga Veneta, Liga Veneta Repubblica, etc.? Many thanks. --Checco (talk) 13:46, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- Same rquest for North League Aosta Valley to the original Lega Nord Valle d'Aosta. Thanks. --Checco (talk) 08:35, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- The same also for Marco Polo Front to Fronte Marco Polo. Thanks. --Checco (talk) 10:45, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

EP fact sheets
'stallion, hi! I notice you changed the European Parliament election, 1996 (Austria) share of votes. You have now learnt an important lesson: EP factsheets/press releases are riddled with errors (e.g. this gives a composition at 1999-5-4 that doesn't add up to 626, and gives a 1.1.95 composition that includes UFE, which wasn't formed until six months later). The worse one I ever saw was one that got the year of Swedish accession wrong. If you could find a source for the revised FPO Austrian vote figure, then that'd be great.
