Stolen C-130

I saw your footnote when U listed the reference page for the stolen C-130. Yup - it wuz for real, and as an Air Force brat who hung around the flightlines at Norton and Eglin Air Force Bases, I was well familiar with this notorious Hercules incident. There is a whole hotbed of chat columns on C-130 - oriented websites about this incident, including speculation that F-100s sent out to search for it may have shot it down, but as that is all speculation, I limited my incident report to the known facts.

I know of a few other notable C-130 hull losses, which I may get 'round to posting at some point.

I take it that you are one of the Big Dogs on the Wiki. I edit certain articles over here, and contribute boat loads of material on the ClemsonWiki project, my alma mater. I wrote the lead chunks for the Operation Credible Sport article, and have contributed to Twelve O' Clock High and Dr. Strangelove, amongst others.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in.

Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."

  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.

The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Thanks for the info on disambiguation pages. The "only one blue link per entry" is updated (March 24 2006) since I last read the dab MOS; thanks for pointing that out. I just made minor fixes a couple of your MOS:DP compliance edits. Recently, the following language got added:

Redlinks should usually not be the only link in a given entry; link also to an existing article, so that a reader (as opposed to a contributing editor) will have somewhere to navigate to for additional information.

Proof I'm from Montana

Now many, many years ago, when I was twenty-three, I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her, and soon they, too, were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life, My daughter was my mother, cause she was my father's wife. To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad, And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother Of the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my stepmother.

Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run, And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue, Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!

  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Thanks for the block on this User talk:EmperorOfSevenSeas - I noticed one of the gibberish mathematical entries and reverted it (and one more), and wound up with the same thing added to my own talk page. I'm not sure if the edits were a person, or aided by a recursive bot. Most seemed to be the formula, but at least one was the removal of an NPOV tag (on AMC Cinemas). I'm not sure if these were the whole point of the exercise, or the targets were just drawn from "what's NPOV" as well as some other criteria. David Oberst 02:35, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

WP:POVFORK

Shuffling off all criticism to a subarticle [3] is blatant bowdlerizing; using POV fork to dodge WP:NPOV. As an admin, I can tell you it won't stand. I've restored a reasonable summary per WP:POVFORK. FeloniousMonk 05:17, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

I am highly offended at your accusation of me trying to dodge NPOV. You have no evidence to support your blatant (your word) accusations. Have you not heard of assume good faith? You don't know me, you know nothing about me. My only motivation in that edit was to eliminate some of the duplication of content between the main article and the sub-article. I am not trying to hide anything. After all, if anyone wants to see all 33kb of the sub-article, all they have to do is click their mouse once. You may not like my summary, and you are free to edit it, but 3 paragraphs (it has since grown to 4 again) is not a "brief summary". Please slow down, be civil and think a little before throwing molotov cocktails at someone with whom you have no history. My fault for not being clear here. I'm not accusing you of dodging WP:NPOV. I'm saying that all criticism cannot be removed, doing so creates a POV fork and is a form of bowdlerism. We can argue over the size of the summary, but a proper summary is required per WP:POVFORK. 1 or 2 sentences is too short to properly summarize the issues. FeloniousMonk 04:01, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
One more thing here. What exactly is the meaning of "As an admin, I can tell you it won't stand."? Is that some kind of threat? I, too, am an admin, and I sincerely hope that you aren't throwing that kind of talk around with other users. That kind of implied threat to use (or abuse) you admin powers on the first contact with another user certainly is not what being an admin is about. Again, please review WP:AGF. I don't think so. I am apparently not the only one who feels the overly long and one-sided summary needs to be tightened up somewhat. All of the 3 paragraphs support the allegations of bias and use politically charged language like "neo-conservative" (whatever that means). The "see also" is also quite one sided. Well, I wouldn't count on edits like Mrmiscellanious' [4] to pass NPOV muster, much less WP:POVFORK.
Look, WP:POVFORK is clear and unambiguous: "the original article should contain a summary of the "Criticism of ... " article". Your idea of a "reasonable summary" is no summary of at all: [5] It contains no mention of the specific issues found in Fox News Channel controversies and allegations of bias and tosses in the canard of having been accused of having a left-wing slant(!).
It's necessary for any summary to be accurate and complete, regardless of who writes it. To be complete and accurate a summary is going to have to hit the major points of the subarticle, period. FeloniousMonk 04:21, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Beatles News
  • Apple Corps v. Apple Computer. A case brought by Apple Corps against Apple Computer, regarding possible infringement of a previous agreement between the two parties in respect of distribution of music, was heard in a London High Court. The story made Wikipedia's front page due to a nomination by our own Kingboyk. The story had an amusing second wave in the news and on Wikipedia; be sure to read the article on Guy Goma if you missed it!
Project News
  • The Beatles article has been approved for inclusion in Wikipedia Version 0.5, making it one of the first 20 articles to be selected and the first in the Music category.
  • The hottest Project page this month has been Policy Talk, where some lively discussion has taken place regarding the (perennial) question of the capitalisation of the letter T in "The Beatles". After seeking the comments of Wikipedian third parties unrelated to the project, the proponents and opponents concluded that the current naming policy was correct. The discussion had the added bonus of bringing in some new members.
Member News
  • Project member (and "co-instigator" of The Beatles Project) Lar was made an Administrator. Project member Kingboyk (the other guilty party) has been awarded a Music Barnstar for his contributions, including his work within The Beatles Project, and has also stewarded the KLF article to Featured Article status this month. Sometimes-contributor ZincOrbie has also been awarded a Barnstar for his work on the Badfinger article. Congratulations to all!
Issue of the Month

The matter of the article History of the Beatles and the History section of the main article The Beatles continues to concern various editors, including DavidWBrooks and Vera, Chuck & Dave. Suggestions, comments, or help with the task would be much appreciated.

I would say that you did the correct thing. The IP's I think are saying that she is hurting herself more than helping with that message, but it is her page, after all, and if she wants that message there, I support her. I am not sure what the IP's motivation is. --rogerd 04:16, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
It's probably amorrow...he did the same thing with Gator1...told me less is more, etc. Also, Rogerd, thanks for the vote of confidence at AN/I...I guess it must amaze people that I can see a little angry when the fact is I almost never am...certainly not by POV pushers...this off wiki harassment is another story however. You are right. Brandt and his followers on WR are trying very hard to ruin this project, and are also trying to ruin some people's lives for no good reason. And I don't know what we can do about it.
