The Haunted Library Mysteries #1
Death Overdue
Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut until she's offered a job as the head of programs and events at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death fifteen years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.
The medical examiner reveals that poison is what did him in and Carrie feels responsible for having surged forward with the program despite pushback from her director. After reading the second book in 'The Haunted Library Mysteries' by Allison Brook last year, I ordered a copy of the first in the series, Death Overdue, to read and get current. It's a great setting and has a little bit of everything for cozy mystery lovers. Carrie Singleton (late 20's, single) is about to leave Connecticut after visiting her aunt and uncle for a few months when she's offered a promotion at the Clover Ridge library. Although she wants to escape, a ghost haunting the building convinces Carrie to stick it out. After her first event is held, the author she brought in to discuss new leads in a murder case from ~10 years earlier is poisoned and dies in the library. Carrie investigates to ensure no one thinks poorly of her, but she also finds the challenge an easy distraction to help her decide to stay in town.
Full of great supporting characters and side stories, this series has a lot of potential. You've got the ghost of a former employee who died under somewhat mysterious circumstances in a fall in the parking lot (we know that'll be a mystery in future books!), a few colleagues who dislike Carrie because of her appearance or connection with her uncle as a member of the library board, her thief father who is missing, her sudden attraction with local sexy investigator Dylan, and a whole lot more. I look forward to all the capers and trouble that could happen in this charming New England town.
Brook has a simple yet strong writing style. It's easy to get lost in the book for a few hours before realizing how far you've read. I like the descriptions and dialog as much as the narratives and past details being dropped throughout the story. I am very curious to learn more about Carrie's aunt and uncle who likely have a very suspenseful and crazy past. This mystery was medium-complex and had a lot of family drama. Ultimately, I thought the killer was a little too easy to identify, but it did keep me guessing a few times in the middle section. I'm curious to see which characters stay in the future books and which ones disappear. There are only 2 in the series so far, but I'm sure a new one will be out in 2019. I'll be looking for that ARC!

Alas, I just couldn't get into this one. I didn't like Carrie AT ALL. She calls her coworkers "dimwitted" and "juvenile," yet she is a 30-year-old woman who dressed like a goth and mooched off her aunt and uncle. The writing also felt clunky and a bit juvenile to me. The plot was all over the place. The characters felt very one dimensional as well. Ya, this just wasn't that great IMO. Onwards...

Carrie Singleton had returned to Clover Ridge, Connecticut to live with her aunt and uncle for a while but she is just about to move on when she's given the opportunity to become the head of programs and events at the local library. When offered the job Carrie is almost ready to turn it down when she hears a strange voice telling her to think on it. Thinking this is her own mind telling her not to pass up the offer quite so quickly she does just that when she finds that the salary will be quite nice which would allow her to get her own place and begin her new life while still close to her family. Carrie finds though the voice convincing her to stay is not her conscience but a friendly ghost of a former employee that helps Carrie in her new position.

Now how in the world could I pass by a book that not only has a main character that shares my name but a setting with a haunted library??? Books and ghosts?? Sign me up please. I will say though jumping into this one I had to keep reminding myself it's called fiction for a reason since sure, a ghost may be fictional but this small town library certainly didn't live up to reality when described either. Unfortunately libraries in the real world are struggling everywhere which is a shame but this one seemed to have endless funds and staff. It threw me off a bit but I sure wish all libraries could be as nice, even if they came with their own ghost.
For the most part the book was a decent start to this new series but there were a few other things I think could have used a bit of a change. The relationship side of the book left a bit to be desired leading into two different directions which had me scratching my head on both sides but won't go into too many details there. I wouldn't have minded to see more of the ghost in the story to make use of the more unique setting for this book. Otherwise, I ended up deciding to give this first installment of the series 3.5 stars and would read the next to see where the story heads with the next case.

A haunted library and Halloween? DEATH OVERDUE pulled me in with some of my favorite elements. Main character Carrie Singleton is the new head of programs and events at Clover Ridge's local library. Unfortunately it's not exactly smooth sailing at first. Carrie discovers the ghost of a former librarian haunting the stacks, learns that not everyone at the library is thrilled with her getting the job, and hosts her first event where the keynote speaker is murdered. Carrie is convinced his death is tied to the unsolved murder of another library employee 15 years earlier, so she does some investigating on her own.
This new series has potential, especially for fans of paranormal cozies and library settings. The two interwoven murder mysteries were intriguing, though it took a while for me to get into the story. I felt like there were too many details of daily happenings that slowed down the flow at times. I also wanted the library ghost to be more integral to the plot, and for Carrie's reaction to the ghost be more - realistic? She wasn't freaked out in the least bit. I think Carrie's character overall needs to be spiced up a bit as the series continues.
The Halloween elements in DEATH OVERDUE were a lot of fun. Will see where the author goes with the next book.

This is the first book in a Haunted Library Mystery series. It's a unique format because it deals not only in murder mysteries (there's more than one murder to solve here) but it has a paranormal aspect as well. There's a ghost in the library (not a spoiler) that communicates with the protagonist, Carrie Singleton, and it's none other than the former murdered librarian whose crime has yet to be solved.
The second murder victim is a retired detective who is about to uncover the identity of the murderer that killed the librarian. Carrie believes these two murders are connected, and thus intends to solve both crimes.
This was a decent first book, even though I would've liked to have seen more written about the ghost of the former librarian.
I adore cozy mysteries set in libraries, so I'll definitely be looking for more from this author.

I love cozy mysteries, especially those having to do with libraries, books, ghosts, and Halloween. This book promised all those things, and it had them... just not very frequently. The main character works as a librarian but it seems like it is just a job to her. There is no real passion for books shown, which to me is important in a cozy mystery about a library. Also, Halloween is over and done with pretty quickly and the ghost is there to say a word or two, but is never made a bigger part of the plot. I also didn't find the mystery interesting. I was quite bored the whole time, which is definitely the last thing you want from a cozy mystery. I would say pass on this one as there are so many other cozies to read.

Carrie Singleton is in her late twenties, single, and has recently moved back to Connecticut. When she is offered a job at the library, she decides to stay in town. Her first major program at the library is led by a retired detective who worked a local murder case that was never solved. During his presentation, he collapses and dies as a result of poisoning. Carrie feels a responsibility to find out who killed the detective, and, in the process, who the murderer was in the cold case.
The first book in The Haunted Library mystery series by Allison Brook. I read this series out of order - I started with the second book. I'm glad I went back and read the first one.
An entertaining read that combines mystery, paranormal (library ghost), and a little romance. Light and charming. Good for fans of cozy mysteries.

Carrie Singleton never stays in one place too long but when she is offered a job coordinating the library’s programs and events she just can’t turn it down. Her first program features Al Buckley, a retired cop who is trying to solve the 15 year old murder of Laura Foster, a library aide. Before he can get to far into his presentation he falls to the floor, dead. The medical examiner rules his death a homicide by poison and the police have very few leads.
Carrie feels his death is partly her fault. Her boss had reservations about the program but Carrie pushed for it to go on as planned. Carrie is sure his death is connected to the library aide’s death all those years ago. Determined to find the killer and with a little help from her new library friend, who happens to be a ghost, she strives ahead with her own investigation. The closer she gets to the truth the closer she gets is to finding herself “checked out” permanently.
I really enjoyed this story. I liked Carrie and her aunt and uncle immediately. They are good people that try to see the best in everyone. Evelyn, the library ghost stole my heart. She appeared whenever Carrie needed her. I could picture her so clearly she felt as real to me as the living characters. We meet several of the library employees, they are quite a group. We also meet the family of Laura Foster and Carrie’s new landlord. The author twists things up a bit in the romance department for our protagonist and I loved it.
The library where most of this story takes place sounds amazing. It is a happening place with all kinds of programs and events, more than any library I have been to. I wish we had a library like it nearby. A secondary scene is the guest house Carrie is renting. It also sounds amazing with its rooms, amenities and views. One view being the hunky landlord.
The entire story is very well written. It flows nicely and at times is very hard to put down. I liked the interesting and unexpected twists and the edge of your seat moments.
Ms. Brook is off to a great start with this series and I am very excited for the next installment.

Death Overdue: A Haunted Library Mystery is a great cozy mystery by author Allison Brook. This is the first book in a new series. The story is told in first-person point of view by Carrie Singleton. Carrie starts out working as a temporary assistant librarian. She is offered the job of head of programs and events which she reluctantly takes. Carrie had returned to the town of Clover Ridge to live with her aunt and uncle after some rough times in her life. She had all intention of leaving Clover Ridge once she got back on her feet but things start to come together and she ends up staying.
I love the setting for this one. Clover Ridge is a nice little town in Connecticut. The story mainly revolves around The Clover Ridge Library. The library happens to have a ghost than only a few people can detect and Carrie happens to be one of them. Throughout the story Carries is trying to solve two murders, one recent and one from the past. If you are worried about the paranormal aspect being too over-the-top, it is not in this book.
My favorite characters were Carrie and the ghost. I also loved Carrie’s Uncle Bosco and Aunt Harriet, a kind and caring couple that makes me want to have them in my family. Throughout the story, Carrie has a thorn in her side by the name of Dorothy Hawkins. Dorothy is upset that Carrie got the job of head of events and programs instead of her.
The author did a wonderful job holding my interest throughout the book. The story had me guessing clear to the end. The dust jacket cover on this book is amazing. I cannot wait to read the next from this author. Just an overall excellent cozy mystery.

Death Overdue makes it on my Top 10 mysteries of 2017 list! I am almost wondering if there is a well known author hiding behind the name Allison Brook. It is an extremely well written, wonderful flowing story with charming characters. Even the not so likable characters are fantastic. A well rounded cozy mystery that kept me glued to my couch.
There's not just 2 murders to be solved but so much more going on in the library and Carrie's life that there is never a dull moment in this book. Evelyn, the library ghost, is a wonderful addition to the story that added some humorous elements as well. And don't get me started talking about Smokey Joe the adorable kitten.
It was a wonderful Halloween themed read which is reflected in the beautiful book cover that tempted me in the first place.
I will looking for more from this author.

Let me start by saying I rate my cozy mysteries different than all other genres of books I read. I still use a five star rating system (or with cozies I like to think instead of stars how many cups of coffee/tea.….which is my idea of cozy). The following is how I rate my cozies:
1 cup of coffee- did not finish or will not continue on in series.
2 cups of coffee- this book has potential, but on the fence about whether I will read the next book.
3 cups of coffee- good- will definitely continue series, but did have some issues
4 cups of coffee- great- will definitely continue series- minor issues
5 cups of coffee-EXCEPTIONAL!
What I think about when I give my ratings:
1.) There called cozies for a reason, and that being said I know they are not for everybody. I love them!! Therefore the first thing I think about is how cozy are they? The more cheese the better for me…lol. The horrible puns in the titles…LOVE THEM. Yes…if you’re wondering... I am the person who loves laffy taffy jokes.

3.) Setting/theme
4.) The mystery
When I met up with Carrie we were all set to leave Connecticut, but then she got the job offer as the programs and event coordinator at the library. We took the job after some debate with the thought of having to work with Dorothy day in and out. That was when the trouble started….our first program we invited retired detective Al Buckley to speak. He was speaking about the murder of former library employee Laura Foster when he just dropped dead! Are you kidding….on our first gig as the new coordinator...this didn’t bode well for the start of our new career.
I gave this book 3 mugs of coffee.
I love the setting of Connecticut, and I hope that there will be more description in the next book. The cover of this book is excellent! The mystery kept me guessing...at least through most of the book. I did figure it out before the killer was revealed, but it didn't take away from the story. The premise of this series has great potential.
The things I didn't love...I wanted more of a presence from Evelyn. I loved her humorous antics, and I think if you are going to title the series “haunted library” it needs to be a more significant part of the book. She seemed kind of whiny about the expectations of the new job, and it frustrated me how judgmental she was about Jared sharing the information about his mother's journal. I realize that she asked him not to, but he was speaking to his father and brother about his mother.

Having worked in our local public library for nearly a decade, the setting rings true (although this particular library apparently has a lot more money in its budget than our library does!). The characters are well-developed, and relationships between those characters are established without a lot of unnecessary background. While I thought I knew who the killer was well before it was revealed in the book, I wasn't sure until the reveal. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

A delightful new para-cozy ghost mystery.
I love it when a book hooks me right from the first page. I can never explain how after only a few sentences, I know I’m reading a book I will thoroughly enjoy, but it does happen. Author Allison Brook has whatever that something is that grabs me.
Para-cozies haven’t always been my favorite picks in the cozy mystery genre. But, I have found myself enjoying the ones with ghosts. DEATH OVERDUE is just such a book. If you don’t like para-cozies, or have wanted to try one out, this is a good book to read. Very quickly into the book, resident library ghost, Evelyn, felt more alive to me than dead. I found myself wanting more of her when she wasn’t around.
There are two murders in this book. A cold case, and a very new case that takes place in the story. Protagonist, Carrie Singleton feels responsible for the second death, and that pushes her to search for the truth in both cases, which may very well be connected.

The first book in the Haunted Library series. I have read this author before and enjoyed her book. I found this book hard to date as I felt the mystery was not much but I like the ghostly librarian and Smokey Joe. There was a backstory hinted at and felt Carrie Singleton was headed for trouble. Even the supporting characters are well developed and made an impression on me.

Death Overdue is an excellent start to a new cozy mystery series featuring a small town library—complete with a resident ghost!—a formable amateur sleuth, and several well-developed supporting characters. The plot was believable, paced well, and offered plenty of clues and red herrings. The author’s adept descriptions and sense of setting made me feel immersed in the mystery. Overall, a very enjoyable read! I recommend it to all cozy mystery readers.

Excellent debut for the Haunted Library Mysteries! Strong protagonist, plot moves swiftly, Ghost is a great character. Definitely reading the next books in this series!

Carrie Singleton is more than ready to leave her hometown of Clover Ridge, Connecticut. She’s been living with her aunt and uncle who have been wonderful, but it’s time for her to spread her wings. The plot is like a huge jigsaw puzzle. The author throws in a few red herrings and gives the reader many possible solutions. It’s a charming story and has the feel of a classic mystery.
Quite an intriguing plot. I only wish book #2 was already out so I could start reading it. Very nice start to a brand new series.

A library mystery to entertain and delight you! Interesting characters, great setting, intriguing plot and a ghost to keep things hopping! The audiobook is quite good and helps bring the characters to life!

Two and a half stars: A cozy with lots of great cozy elements, but the romance is a flop and the pace drags.
Carrie is convinced it is time to take flight and leave Clover Ridge. She has enjoyed living with her aunt and uncle and working in the library but she has worn out her welcome. She is floored when Sally, the head librarian, offers her a job promotion. Carrie decides to give the job as head of programs a try. Unfortunately, Carrie’s first program featuring a retired detective discussing a cold case goes horribly wrong. The detective dies right there in front of everyone by poison. Carrie starts digging trying to figure out who wanted to silence Al and why. Surprisingly, Carrie has a new ally, Evelyn, a ghostly librarian. Can the two crack the case?
What I Liked:
*A cozy mystery is always fun. I usually enjoy the settings and the light mystery. I did like the cozy setting in this one, what isn’t to like about a library in a small town? Plus, I liked that this one was set during Fall around Halloween. Add in a friendly librarian ghost and you have the makings for a good cozy.
*I enjoyed the mystery. Sometimes the murders are trivial, but this one centered around a cold case murder that occurred fifteen years ago, and then the murder of the detective who had taken up the cold case. The mystery itself was solid. There were plenty of suspects and red herrings to throw the reader off the real culprit.
*Evelyn, the ghost, was an interesting addition. I liked that she popped in and out with her motherly advice. I thought it was funny that she was able to change clothes.
*I appreciated that Carrie ended up forming new friendships. I especially enjoyed watching her win over the demanding and prickly head librarian. It seemed that by the end, she had even won over her enemy.
*The ending reveals all the secrets and ties up the mystery. No unanswered questions.
And The Not So Much:
*I am not sure where this one went wrong, but I found the second half dragging. The pace was so slow, and I quickly grew bored.
*Even though I enjoyed Evelyn the ghost, I didn’t like the lack of detail on her character. She just shows up, with no explanations. She hides a lot of things, not sure why. It was also strange that she could change her clothes and come and go. Where did she go? How did she change clothes?
*I found the whole murder of the detective implausible. Who would poison someone in front of a crowd?
*There were several characters who were negative and nasty. They took away from the cozy atmosphere and charm.
*The romance was a big miss for me. It appears that she is going to strike up a relationship with the man she is working with the to solve the case, and then she suddenly goes cold toward him after spending a lot of time with him. She quickly develops feelings for her mysterious landlord who behaves strangely. The romantic feelings come out of nowhere. I just didn’t feel the romance at all.

This is the first book in a brand new cozy mystery series! I really loved this one and am excited to see where the author takes the series next. Carrie (the heroine/sleuth) really spoke to me in this one and I enjoyed her as a character and how she presented herself to the world (especially considering that she was completely changed from the person she used to be). The added paranormal piece was also really exciting and while I wish this ghost was a bit more prominent throughout the book she did make a fantastic secondary character. I can't wait to see more of Carrie and this ghost working together in the future. But, the best part of the book? The setting! We, as book worms, can really appreciate a setting that revolves around BOOKS. And this one takes place (mostly) in a library! This setting really worked for the story and I loved seeing the characters interactions within it and how the author described it -I could almost smell the pages!
In addition to all of this, the mystery or "who-dun-it" was pretty good. I couldn't figure out the murderer until it was smack dab in my face. Everything that lead up to it was a mystery as well. What I could have used more of was being able to sleuth with Carrie and Jarred- there weren't too many clues presented to the reader, but I think it all worked out smoothly.
Overall, this is a really great debut and first book in the series. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy cozy mysteries, those who like reading about women sleuths, and those who love a little bit of paranormal added into their stories.

Death Overdue by Allison Brook is the first book in the Haunted Library Mysteries series. Carrie Singleton takes the job as head of programs and events at Clover Ridge library, only to have her first speaker, a retired homicide detective, poisoned as he is about to reveal the murderer of a former library aide killed 15 years earlier. I enjoyed this book very much and especially liked getting to know the characters and the town. I loved Evelyn, the resident ghost of the library, and would have liked her to play a bigger part in assisting the investigation. A nice start to what looks like a fun and entertaining series.

This new series has a few things that I enjoy in a cozy. It has a small town, quaint shops and restaurants, close to larger cities for shopping and entertainment, some romance, a murder or two, sheriff who grudgingly shares some information and a bit of the paranormal. What could have been a 3-4 star review is now a 1 star review because of the obnoxious, hypocritical "heroine." Here are some examples of why the protagonist, Carrie Singleton, grated on me so much:
1) Degeneration and defiance of the police to further the plot of her being the one to solve the case. Degeneration: Multiple times she comments on how the police aren't making any progress in the cases--she basically views them as ineffective and incompetent.
Defiance: At one point she contemplates withholding evidence from the police because "they wouldn't share anything with me, so why should I share anything with them?" Carrie is a PRIVATE CITIZEN and the police are, well, the POLICE...they are not obligated to share anything with her, and her wanting to withhold evidence because they didn't is petulant and stupid (even if she did eventually share it).
While this tactic of disparaging police is a common occurrence in many cozy mysteries, that doesn't excuse it, and instead of making the protagonist look smart, it makes them look weak and vacuous (ie, they wouldn't be able to 'solve the case' if not for a conveniently incompetent police force).
2) Carrie is a fan of double standards.
Throughout the book Carrie is semi-dating the son, Jared, of one of the murder victims, and the two decide to investigate his mother's murder together. Later in the book Carrie develops a theory about some evidence she thinks his mother may have left behind that could point to her killer--but she decides she doesn't want Jared to share this news with his family (you know, the other people related to the victim who have a RIGHT to know such things). When Jared does share it, she becomes indignant because she asked him not to and he did it anyways--completely disregarding her "feelings." I could maybe overlook this...except for something that happened earlier in the book: Carrie had decided to interview a friend of one of the other victims. This friend of the victim happens to be the elderly father of Trish, one of Carrie's coworkers who she supposedly considers her own friend. However, even when Trish BEGS her not to, fearing that Carrie's interviewing him will make him a target for the killer, Carrie completely disregards Trish's feelings and concerns and does it anyways.
So let me get this straight--it's okay for Carrie to disregard her friend's feelings and do what she wants, but when Jared does the same thing to her, that is unacceptable? Hypocrite, hypocrite, hypocrite!
3) Carrie justifies/excuses her shameful behavior.
Trish's dad, who Trish was worried might be harmed by Carrie's meddling, DOES get attacked. He ends up being ok, but despite admitting to herself that her interview may indeed have brought about this outcome, Carrie is quick to excuse herself. She tells herself she didn't MEAN for him to get hurt, and that she wants him to be ok, so she shouldn't feel bad...which is a complete load of rubbish. I mean, let's say she had hit someone with her car because she was texting while driving...would the fact she didn't MEAN to hit the person and wanted them to be ok excuse her from creating the situation? No! So actually Carrie should still feel guilty and ashamed of herself.
So despite the setting (small town library), the fun ghost, the cute library cat, the enjoyable descriptions of food and all the events the library was having, Carrie was so unlikeable that I just couldn't get past it. She ruined what otherwise could have been a lovely cozy.

Small town, delicious food, and good company usually gets me. Our leading lady turned out to be likable and possibly more romance in the next book with an intriguing hot guy. Can't wait for more.

I was looking for seasonal reads and came across this first in series cozy mystery that includes a ghost and a librarian detective set in the Autumn in small town New England. It seemed a good fit and I willingly picked it up.
Overall, I found Death Overdue a moderately engaging book. I enjoyed the mystery, the settings and activities, and found the surrounding cast of characters pleasant.
After the introduction to the story and then the murder, I was conscious of the pace until nearly the end as the book meandered through Carrie's work at the library, interactions with friendly as well as 'mean girl' library workers, family times with her cute uncle and aunt as well as the set up for not one, but two handsome guys interested in her.
It was interesting that there was a deep backstory for the main character, Carrie. I enjoyed the author taking her time to do this. Carrie had a tough childhood which has made her a drifter type and distant from her own family and everyone else. This lifestyle of hopping from job to job and place to place allows her to stay disengaged so she can avoid anyone learning her past or getting close. Death Overdue opens with her as the tenuous Prodigal come home to stay with her great aunt and uncle who talk her into sticking around for a while and taking a permanent job at the library.
The mystery was two-part. There is a recent murder that is tied to a past murder. I figured out the who and the why as soon as I had enough pieces though I must say that it was still a decently developed murder mystery plot with a colorful group of characters to suspect. There was a big climax scene that had me flipping pages quickly.
A few of her conclusions and actions made the heroine the iffy part for me. I was none too impressed over several things.
Carrie starts out on the outs with her boss and some others and tends to see it as their problem, but, she was bringing it on herself to a certain extent. For example, she can't figure out that she's in a professional job and resents being told to dress professionally by her boss. She doesn't see her own standoffish 'rebel' goth girl attitude has led to her boss reluctant to trust her with the job.
Then later as the story progresses, she chooses to suppress evidence she finds just because, shocker, the police choose not to take a total stranger with little to do with the case and no experience with investigation into their confidence and this makes her mad.
She also chooses to get resentful when her friend shares what she finds with his family (and this is their mother who is the object of her investigation that she wants him to keep quiet about). Later, I was uncomfortable that, without permission, she has no problem reading through the dead woman's journal. I felt she should have done one of two things- give it to the family or to the police, but not sit down and read what was really none of her business to keep or read without permission. I'll give some allowance that she found the thing in a place that she legitimately had access to.
She manages to figure out early on that she is putting one of the men in the friend zone, but waits until much later and never tells him while going out over and over again with him. She gives him an abrupt brush off before dashing off to be with the other guy. Not cool.
Lets not forget a few dumb decisions that get another person hurt and, on another occasion, nearly gets her and Jared killed.
So... yes, I struggled with the heroine, but also saw her grow a great deal so that she changed how she was at work and with being more sociable while acknowledging where she messes up. Seeing her acknowledge and change behaviors went a long way toward winning me back. I hope she does better as an amateur sleuth who can work with law enforcement and I'm glad that the potential love triangle bit was dealt with.
The seasonal element was light, but still a nice flavor in the background. Autumn activities, fall holidays, and a delightful library ghost who helps Carrie around the library and with the case.
I liked rather than loved this one. I definitely enjoyed the setting and several elements so I will continue on with the series. Cozy mystery fans who don't mind a bit of the paranormal and enjoy a New England small town and library setting should pick this one up.

Death Overdue is the first book in the A Haunted Library Mystery series.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to more books in the series.
Carrie Singleton has been enjoying living with her aunt and uncle and working at the local library, but her wanderlust is getting her to look at moving on to a warmer climate. Then one morning Sally, the library’s director asks her to come to her office. Sally offers Carrie the position of Director of Programs and Events
Carrie is approached by Al Buckley, a retired police officer who last case still remains unsolved and caused his retirement. Buckley has been bothered by not being able to solve the case and believes he now knows who the killer was and wants to present his case. Sally isn’t really for this program, but finally, agrees. Shortly after the program begins, Buckley pauses to take a bite of a cookie and as he is about to resume his talk he collapses and dies.
After the police have gathered their information at the scene, Carrie is approached by Jared Foster, the youngest son of the murdered victim and asks what new information Buckley might have had on the case. She replies that she has no idea what Buckley was going to divulge. Then Jared asks for her help in finding who had killed his mother. Additional help comes from a completely unknown specter, that being Evelyn Havers, the library’s ghost. She doesn’t know who the killer is, but is able to provide Carrie with some ideas as to where to look. I would love to see more of Evelyn is future books.
The book has an interesting cast of well-developed and believable characters. I’m looking forward to more about them and the community. Hopefully, Carrie will decide to settle down and stay in Clover Ridge. She might even find a little romance, too.

What could be better than a library-related cozy mystery? One with a ghost in it… specifically the ghost of a former librarian. What could be better than that? A dash or two of romance, some warm familial affection, a bit of humor, and books galore. Oh – and TWO cases to solve. And a main character who shares my name. Sign me up please!
Carrie is a bit of a mystery all on her own. Dresses goth one day and then -after getting the library job she wanted – we see her more professional side. She’s interested in two different guys, and I was definitely pulling for one over the other. I loved her relationship with her aunt and uncle, but I wasn’t a fan of her approach in other relationships. Overall, though, she’s a great protagonist who sets a fabulous foundation for more in this series.
Bottom Line: Death Overdue by Allison Brook is well-plotted, engaging, and leaves us with hints about the direction the rest of the series might take. (For instance, was the old librarian/current ghost’s death really an accident… and why are Carrie & her young cousin the only ones who can see her? I’m so curious to see how these threads play out.) Great characters, intriguing subplots & back stories, and just enough romance & humor to satisfy every type of reader.

This read more as an event planner book then a librarian book. Which makes sense as the main character Carrie is the head of programs and events at her town’s library. Carrie has a very busy life, she has just gotten a new promotion at work, she’s moving and also trying to solve a crime. The main thing I seem to notice is that Carrie never seems to read or at least lament that she doesn’t have time to read.
The ending was
Interesting start to the series, I’m hoping that book 2 in the series has more about the library. I’ll just have to read it soon to find out.

The main character in this is Carrie Singleton, who works at the local library in a small town called Clover Ridge, Connecticut. She doesn't really want to stay and put down roots. Her boss offers her a promotion to head up programs and events, and suddenly she finds herself gladly accepting the new position. The first time in a long while, she is excited about something and can't wait to start. During her first big event, catastrophe strikes!
I stumbled upon this author, and so glad I did. I love the library theme, and of course, the friendly ghost haunting it. This book takes right off with the mystery so it grabbed my attention from the start. There are plenty of red herrings that kept me guessing. I'm actually looking forward to reading more books by this author, and would definitely recommend to cozy mystery readers. This is one haunted library series you don't want to miss.
