Tangled is my all-time favorite Disney movie. Rapunzel is my favorite Disney Princess, and Flynn Ryder is my all-time favorite Disney character, perioTangled is my all-time favorite Disney movie. Rapunzel is my favorite Disney Princess, and Flynn Ryder is my all-time favorite Disney character, period. Therefore, Christina Lauren’s Tangled Up in You was always going to get extra scrutiny. Pass or fail, authors, there would be no in-between with me. I’m happy to report that Christina and Lauren passed with flying colors.
The author team nailed the spirit of the beloved movie, and the heart of the characters. It was as if Ren and Fitz were channeling Rapunzel and Flynn. Plus, it was fun to recognize how the plot from the movie and the book lined-up in clever ways.
I loved how C & R sprinkled references to the movie with a subtle, delicate touch. Such as this passage: He had a vague uneasiness settling in his chest, like something huge had shifted inside, a boulder rolled over to reveal a secret opening. He worried he would never be the same again. Boom, I’m immediately replaying “I See the Light” in my head, recalling that incredible (and all-time most romantic) scene from the movie. There were many other passages with similar, sometimes direct phrasing of dialogue that always landed just right.
