I think to some extent I began reading this book with the wrong expectations. It begins with a rapture like event & 2% of the population disappearing for seemingly no reason. When I hear the world rapture, I’m going to think religious complexity because those are associated words/concepts.
This however, has nothing complex or interesting at all to say about what would very likely be the biggest talking point if an event like this were to take place. People are going to have a HUGE array of opinions, reactions, and coping mechanisms when a core of their belief system is shaken. But you’ll find none of that explored here!
Instead we are treated to a mediocre drama involving our central characters where honestly they may as well not even be in the rapture scenario. Telling this story could have been 100% achieved without the mysterious premise, and the premise is arguably the most interesting piece of the story? So to say I don’t understand the choice of storytelling is an understatement.
The characterization was also completely unenjoyable. Everyone in this book is a fucking moron. Their inner monologues are without nuance, without distinction, and at times extremely mean spirited without reason? I did not find a single one I could sympathize with & no one’s arc lead anywhere conclusive or satisfying.
I have heard nothing but positive things about the HBO show that’s based on this book, but I’ve heard the show took quite a few liberties & so I will be giving it a try. If you have been interested in watching but hoping to read it first, take my advice. Just skip straight to the show & save yourself a huge waste of time. ...more

Well I enjoyed this for the most part! I think it was slightly too long & I was not super invested in the interspersed novel Paul Sheldon was writing while in the captivity of Annie Wilkes, but the story kept my attention & I really didn’t know how it was going to end! The last part of the book was super fun. This is probably my second favorite King novel I’ve read, coming in behind The Shining. Definitely give this one a read if you’re on the fence for where to begin with Stephen King. ...more

I’m a little disappointed in the end of this book. It had plenty of good moments but ultimately I did not enjoy this nearly as much as my first foray into Stephen King’s horror (The Shining).
I’m glad I read this second because The Shining gave me hope that there are Stephen King novels out there that I can fall in love with, but sadly this one isn’t going on the favorites shelf. ...more

I know he’s 5 & he cannot help some of his observations & he is traumatized by his circumstances. I understand. But I did not enjoy having this entire story relayed to me through the vocabulary of a 5-year-old. Especially since at times it really felt like an adult’s interpretation of a 5-year-old vs an actual 5-year-old?
If the premise of this book intrigues you, give it a try. But it was definitely not for me. ...more
