A lot of people have loved both this author and this book, but for whatever the reason, I had a lot of trouble getting engaged in it. I found it slow and complicated, and it was hard to get connected to the characters. There was a sadness to it. I think that backdrop of pain was part of why it was hard for me to enjoy the book. I admit to looking for either uplifting, growth and transformation, escapism, or really phenomenal writing that makes you think. This one was well written, but carried a lot of pain. Both for the relationships and the political cultural context.
I'm not sure what to say about the fact that on my urging, at least two to three other people are planning to pick it up. I delayed writing the review, because I did not want to influence those readers. Sometimes my opinion falls right in line with the mainstream. Other times, I am definitely an outlier. I feel a little uncomfortable voicing this one. I am however using it for my Fly the Skies Challenge book, flying from Iraq to Chile. So it was a worthy read for at least that purpose. ...more
