It was dark, it was creepy, it was everything I wanted it to be. I was surprised at times. It kept me reading. Towards the end, there was no way I could stop turning pages. The ending was perfect and I rarely say that. It made me think of The Haunting of Hill House, (a favorite of mine). I solidly recommend this book! ...more

It was a bit strange knowing the killer I gave this book 5 stars because I nearly read it in one sitting. Had it not been for sleeping, I would have. It was a bit strange knowing the killer from the start. But seeing it unfold..going back in time, returning to present, all the different twists..was nothing short of awesome. I was glued to a story where I didn't need to figure out the killer. That was amazing! I thought I might lose interest, after all the mystery was solved, instead, with each page, I became more invested. Well done, Jennifer Hillier. Well done. ...more

This book surprised me. With a slow start that built the tension, I thought it was going to be an okay book. Then came the second half like a speeding car on ice. I'm so happy I stayed with it. It's not a gory haunting. There wasn't anything that made me think, this story is only for certain readers. Nor is there anything I feel I needed to warn anyone about. It's just a good old fashioned haunting....more

I almost gave up the book. I might have if I hadn't been listening to it for the Summerween Readathon. But then the story started weaving a magical spell around. The haunting part of it was slowly descending upon me. This part does move slowly but it also holds your attention until the halfway mark when suddenly, like a roller coaster going downward, the story speeds up and you are surrounded by ghosts. This was worth the wait! I was thinking it was good story but not great...then the ghosts truly arrived and flipped the switch. I do want to caution readers who might be sensitive. The first part of this book is definitely hard to get through. I listened on Audible and the narration was amazing. The narrator definitely brought the story to life. The torture of a Jewish family and the extreme child abuse are very hard to listen to. It was also a part of the story that was necessary. This book is not for everyone but if you decide to read it, and you can handle that part, prepare for a fantastic ghost story. The scariest part I listened to in the dark. It was heart stopping scary! ...more
This was different for me. There is a main story of a father and daughter on a road trip to Salem. The father is hoping to repair their relationship. This was different for me. There is a main story of a father and daughter on a road trip to Salem. The father is hoping to repair their relationship. Then sprinkled throughout the main story are a variety of short stories in the horror genre. This, on audio, took adjustment. I actually listened to this two separate times so that I was able to truly enjoy it. Some of the short stories ended with no real closure so I felt off balance the first time. I think for audio some type of indication that those stories just end that way would help. In my first listen, I wasn’t certain if there was more later and I needed to remember who these characters are. The second time I was aware so I felt it was a more enjoyable listen. The narrator did a good job though. I do recommend the story if you are looking for something different. This book, though, won’t work well for those who need a more structured, focused story. If you are this type of reader you may get frustrated by the audio. I do like all of the stories so if you are still interested, you may like a print copy better so you can read it in a fashion more to your needs. ...more
