I truly didn't see the point of this book. While it did get a bit better in the end and did delve a bit into translation decisions such as d2.5/5stars
I truly didn't see the point of this book. While it did get a bit better in the end and did delve a bit into translation decisions such as debates about taking scenes out or retranslating them from the original direct one, and I did enjoy where it discussed what Murakami himself has said and done, mostly this book is simple a biography of the translators Murakami has had over the years and the work they've done. It's important, but not really what I wanted out of this book....more
This was VERY informative and interesting but, just like actual quarantine lol, was a bit repetitive. I'm sure this would have been more fun3.5/5stars
This was VERY informative and interesting but, just like actual quarantine lol, was a bit repetitive. I'm sure this would have been more fun if you were keeping up as she was posting each day and I see that little ray of hope these entries probably gave people, but reading it all at once was a bit much. Other than that, this is such a perfect little time capsule of 2020 and will be probably studied for years to come....more
This was SO well done, so fantastically research, and has taught me more about eexual ethics, women's rights and women's politics than I ever 5/5stars
This was SO well done, so fantastically research, and has taught me more about eexual ethics, women's rights and women's politics than I ever knew before. This taught me SO much, got me SO angry, and I want everyone to read it.
I highly recommend for everyone but especially Americans who got abstinence-based sex ed classes - seriously, ya'll need to pick this up and dismantle your previous teachings. Also this is NOT just for women, she also goes a lot into how toxic masculinity is harming young boys.
Only problem is that is IS from 2010 so consider that if you pick it up, some of the references are a bit outdated but I do think it still holds up very well....more

I absolutely loved this. This is not for someone who wants a feminism nonfiction book, this is a book about three women's TRUE and REAL liv4.75/5stars
I absolutely loved this. This is not for someone who wants a feminism nonfiction book, this is a book about three women's TRUE and REAL lives - with all the flaws they have and problems they have faced. I thought it was done so well to show how everyone woman, even one's we're rooting for, have their flaws, and that even women we might not be rooting for deserve respect, and how simply being a woman can affect your entire life and other's perceptions of you. This is not for people who don't like reading about sex - especially really taboo/kinky sexual encounters. But I personally think sex is one of the most intimate, legitimate ways of looking into women's lives and the trauma women specifically face.
edit: i just read some reviews and WHY are people saying this book is about sex/sex lives/desire???? guys this book is about TRAUMA. This book is about the TRAUMA women face from sex and the misogyny and sexism that innate surrounds sex for women. Come on now, how can anyone actually read this and think it's an "EROTIC" story about three women??? I don't think anyone giving it less than 4 stars actually read this book jfc...more
