It was engrossing (**spoiler alert** 2 stars | Loved the premise but wish someone else had written it. This author and I are on different wavelengths.
It was engrossing (because I wanted to see how it all played out) and also so so boring simultaneously. I ended up skimming at least a couple sentences of unnecessary information or meaningless flowery prose per page. Clementine sucked—she was such a flat character and many of her choices and emotional reactions (or lack there of) defied common sense.
The story—romance included—was flat and focused on a lot of stuff that I didn’t care about (ie. Repetitive work stuff, boring friend scenes, repetitive aunt scenes from the past, cliche travel, art or cooking stuff that makes it sound like the author did no research and was just randomly making stuff up).
There were also tons of loose ends that were never explained, addressed or tied up. Wish someone could take the good bones of the story and fix it.
Pros: The bits about suicide and grief were done well. I cried when Clementine met Vera. Here’s my favorite quote:
“There is no easy way to talk about suicide. Sometimes the people you love don’t leave you with goodbyes—they just leave.”
My main gripes:
If Clem is so devastated by the loss of her aunt—which she goes on and on and on about—why doesn’t it cross her mind that if she sticks around in the apartment she might get to see her aunt again!? But that scene is skipped right over in favor of more flowery bullshit! And she talks about selling the apartment right away. Why wouldn’t she keep it for seven years on the off chance she gets to see her aunt again?
If Iwan was so in love with her and knew he was going to see her again whyyyyyy was he hooking up with so many other women like basically right up until he knows he’s going to see her again?? BECAUSE HE DOES ESSENTIALLY KNOW THE EXACT DATE HE’LL SEE HER AGAIN! What a feckless character. Idk how I’m supposed to believe they actually love each other. They knew each other for like 3 days. The insta love was not believable. Too many plot holes and missed opportunities in this one....more
4 stars. This was a spooky yet extremely charming second chance time travel romance! I am not into paranormal romance—ghosts are typically not my jam 4 stars. This was a spooky yet extremely charming second chance time travel romance! I am not into paranormal romance—ghosts are typically not my jam at all—but the fact that this was written like a gothic romance with time travel and mystery made it impossible to put down. It did have a few memorable sexy moments though I wish it had been steamier (2/5 steam - fade to black)....more
