The mystery was interesting and held my interest but the story overall lost points for the believability; maybe I’m being picky but how can a pizzeria that is so busy all the time, including lunch (and how are you so busy in a small town) work with minimal employees like this? Otherwise, a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next....more

While this was set during the holidays, the writing didn’t really make me feel the Christmas spirit and this could have been set at any time of year if not for a random Christmas reference here and there. The characters were OK but I didn’t connect with either Hailey or Jay and the “conflict” that brings them together was lackluster. This was not my favorite Debbie Macomber.

This was all over the place and didn’t make sense; it could have been fixed had they just found the body on the ground because the flight caused the most confusion. Violet Rhinehammer is unlikeable and comes off as incompetent as a reporter with her lack of action on the investigation. And the audiobook does not do this book any favors; it suffers from decent editing, with sentences being repeated right after the other. This is the first time I have DNF one of her books but this was just a mess. ...more

Julie Mulhern’s writing flows so well that you get caught up in the story and the next thing you know, you’re almost done with the book and start wondering how long you have to wait for the next one. The characters are family now, and you miss them when they’re not around. The mysteries are always well-plotted and keep you guessing until the very end. While it is a cozy in the traditional sense, with its amateur sleuth, small town, and dead bodies, it also has this amazing heartwarming, feel-good component that makes you want to visit Nora, her friends, and her amazing bookshop. I liked that, despite the murder, the story continued to focus on gardening rather than losing the theme in the investigation as some often do. It took me awhile to warm to Maggie but she grew on me and I was intrigued by the myriad of tasks she had to keep up with, especially her various fights for her property from developers and family alike. There was quite a bit of repetition in the book but hopefully that will be smoothed out if this is a series.

I learThere is something so comforting about visiting Harvest and, when you add in the Christmas setting, it’s idyllic - well, except for the murder. I learn a little more about the Amish every time I read these and I feel so welcome within the community of Harvest as a whole. As usual, while the setting is artfully described, the mystery is front and center in these novels, and I was enjoying following along as Bailey and Aiden juggled investigation, visiting guests, and wedding planning to find the guilty party. While I love Jethro, I am tiring of the constant need for babysitting and focus on Juliet foisting him on Bailey every time. Otherwise, this is a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next.

I enjoyed the various horror aspects of the story but got confused with the various groups of people at times. It all works out in the end and the different terrifying scenarios they encounter will keep you reading well into the night. There were a few too many mentions of being the chubby minority and railing against the patriarchy, etc, but it all comes together well as they confront their issues.

I thought the characters are fun and likeable, though Holly at the end did some things that were so selfish that she lost a lot of points but otherwise I loved the chemistry between the characters and especially the friendship between Holly and Ivy. The settings were idyllic (who doesn’t want a vacation in Kauai or a nice cabin in the woods?!!!) and the writing was easy to follow with distinct voices for each character. Overall a fun read!

I love being privy to his thoughts and how he slowly works out who the guilty party is, sounding it out with the suspects all standing around, wondering if they’ve been caught.
