A bunch of teens get stranded in a car, in the wilderness. I love a good survival thriller, but this one felt more like teens talking about stuff that doesn't matter in a car for 70% of the book. Only one character is really awesome - THE DOG! Yes, he lives (that is always my first question) and he is great but not in it enough. All the teens are mostly stereotypical, the main character is a holier than thou girl that mostly is concerned about her crush in a life and death situation. I mean who cares if one of your friends died - YOU CAN FINALLY SHARE YOUR TRUE FEELINGS WITH YOUR CRUSH! Oh, she is also a vegetarian (great, you do you) and she lets you know constantly and it verges on preachy.
There was a slightly diverse cast of characters - one was Black, one was Asian and one was disabled. They had some talks about race and religion that seemed pretty forced, or maybe too casual. I'm not sure but it just didn't work for me. It also didn't help that the Black kid gets killed off and the chronically ill person, of course, is sacrificed to save the abled bodied person and therefore a hero. As someone who is chronically ill, I get tired of that trope - really tired. We can please not be a plot device for other characters to grow? Please?
Religion, there is a lot of talk about God in this book. It even ends on a note about having faith - the second that stuff comes up - I basically check out. That's a me thing, but it's enough to really just put the final nail in the coffin for me.
All of this, coupled with there not being any sense of danger till the very end and this book just didn't hit the mark for me. Ah well, you win some - you lose some. ...more

Kara is just I love Kara Thomas, I look forward to her new thriller every year. We had to wait two years for That Weekend, but I wasn't disappointed. Kara is just really good at twists and turns. Even when you think you have it all figured out, there is usually one more twist in there that you didn't see coming at all. One of the twists in this one was messed up! Can't wait for more from Kara. ...more

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this story since YA mystery can be so hit and miss but this kept me guessing till the end and had many unexpected turns. I loved the characters and podcasts always make for such a cool atmosphere in stories. Would highly recommend.
I bet this book would be good on audio too - I feel like all podcast type books are so good on audio. ...more
