Though the characters were all unlikable, they were also all compelling and the reflections on the publishing industry and society as a whole felt clever and relevant. Recommended!...more

The story is told in alternating POVs, which Jewell always does so well, yet it strays a little from her usual format, too. I guessed certain twists, but that did not take anything from my enjoyment of the book overall. This is an author who knows how to write compelling characters, and as a character-driven reader, I much appreciate it. Recommended!...more

She has such a real, human way of creating characters and such a literary and yet highly accessible style of writing. Olive, Again is a continuation of Olive Kitteridge, following Olive (now in her late 70s and early 80s) as well as the people in her orbit, some of whom are familiar and others new. The characters feel believable and, though many are only given a chapter, are multi-dimensional. Their struggles, joys and fears are ones with which, I think, most readers can, on some level, identify. Strout has a quiet and insightful way of delving deep, while maintaining a subtle sense of humor that makes these books both literary and accessible. Absolutely recommended!...more

My expectations were high, having loved the author‘s, “Small Things Like These”, and I was not disappointed. The writing is beautiful, poetic, yet also quiet, almost restrained. The story is simple and still so very profound, centered around the complex inner and outer life of a young Irish girl. This is one I’ll be thinking about and recommending for some time to come....more

I was hesitant at first, because hyped up books are, more often than not, a bit of a disappointment for me. Thrilled to say this was not the case here. It’s a long read, but I could not put it down! Books set in India always intrigue me, and this one brought a lot to the table - culture, mystery, relationships, intrigue. Highly recommend!...more

I read this book once when I was in school, and though it moved me then, I was not somehow able to grasp its magnitude. I recently read OPEN HEART by Wiesel, and it was so engaging, I thought it might be good to try this again, too. It is a short book, but I have yet to come across a book ten times its length with half as much power. I sat outside in my garden reading this. It was quite hot, the sky blue, birds chirping, an idyll of peace, and my arms were covered in goosebumps. It is incredible, I have read about the Holocaust and learned about it in school and university, and still, reading this book the thought running through my mind again and again is, how can this have happened? How can such horrors happened, and for years and years!? What answers could ever be found for these questions? None that I can accept, certainly. I am glad NIGHT is required reading in school. It should be read. This review doesn't do the book justice, but I am still too emotionally worn out to do any better. Read this book, that's all I really need to say anyway. Read it and think about it, the latter being inevitable.
