The characters: There isn't necessary a "squad"thats formed in this book, rather we learn different storylines of each character and how they all entwine, and honestly the characters were the best part!
Selene, the ice bitch! I'm gonna be honest... she scared the *absolute shit* outta me and I loved her character best
"I'll freeze Nemesine's heart, I'll chill her bones to the marrow, that every step will shatter her legs like grass!" Selene vowed"
Pierrce , the scholar wizard! *cough* nerd "You stare at certain death and you take it as an opportunity for research?"
Temur aka Iron Flower aka Temornac aka a dragon !! CURSED by her father to STAY IN HUMAN FORM ... oof [image]
Nemesine, the ... ! I have no clue how to describe this character. Her redemption arc in this one book is more complicated than Zuko's 3 seasons of AVATAR
She goes from threats that literally gave me GOOSEBUMPS: "Who watches your lifeless body bob towards surface, satisfied with the terror and desperate I've caused."
to ... Flirting with the goddamn dragon:
"Why not? We're both scourges upon humanity" [image]
And yah sure there's also our MC: Vera, the sleeping beauty... I mean soul mage. Kinda got miss perfect vibes, i mean she didn't feel any emotions about being in a COMA FOR SEVERAL CENTURIES ??? girl please ??? there was just a strong disconnect and I liked her least
The world building ... there's just a lot of it. I shit you not, the first 10 chapters is world-building and character intros, sprinkled with plot developments. Its around ch. 20 that characters start actually interacting with each other, have some banter, and fight scenes to attack some shit
[image]
Like why was the world building and character description soooo excessive ... When the dialogue was genuinely sooo funny *once all the characters were in same place:
“So, my question is: what happened next?” Vera asked.
Nemesine raised her brow at the question. “Okay. A couple of things: One, that was centuries ago, you think I'd remember that? Second, what makes you think I'll be truthful?”
“Because you have nothing better to do, you said so yourself.” Vera replied with a cheeky expression. Nemesine wasn't as amused.”
Something I appreciated was how the world DIDN'T revolved around the MC. Instead it was all a tangled web, that author just so creatively throws MC in the middle of chaos rather than having it all spiral about her. Classy *chef’s kiss*
[image]
There were also several kingdoms and epic cultures in play that I wished we knew more about. Here's a list of some that just POPPED up and if it seems a *tad confusing* and overwhelming... thats because it fucking was ノಠ_ಠノ
Arlysians (foe) Jade Emperor, father of dragons (friend) Brass Empire (friend or foe?) Vanir (?) Aesir (?) Pteleiros (all dead) Umr At-Tawaii ( friend ? ) Wizards of Orient (friend ?) [image]
I NEED A GODDAMN DIAGRAM TO KEEP THIS SHIT STRAIGHT
..... Update : the author has released said "goddamn diagram" ... tis a glorious preview of the different lands but be warned...there is more yet to be revealed *cough* its the clouds. foreshadowing.*cough*
[image] .......
The writing style ... again ... very descriptive of the world when I prefer more thought process of our heroes just mocking the shit outta everything, thats just iconic
But generally, the author had some decent character descriptions and build-up, *once he got going* there were some brilliant lines that I could picture in my head clearly:
“She spoke and two voices emerged from her throat; one heard by ear, one heard by soul. To hear with either was a sobering experience and mortals could feel their lack of permanence as their minds reeled.”
Like HOLY CRAP
And now, lets talk about elephant in the room ... the flashbacks ... jesus christ
“The clouds in her eyes began to part, but the world she would see was not her own. Thus, a vision began to play out before her…”
there were flashbacks from good guys, bad guys and dragons there were flashbacks about other people's flashbacks there were flashbacks from centuries ago, a month, and 2 hundred years
To say it felt a little tedious and overused...
and pLeAse please take this note that my BIGGEST COMPLAINT was the constant change in POV but no label ?? Like for real bro? it takes like 2 seconds smh
Overall, I liked the general plot. But the writing style of prolonginggg the world building made this book feel wayyy longer than it was. So if you in the mood for a long burn with enough kingdoms and cultures and details to rival game of thrones, I recommend give this a try. Cuz it genuinely surprised me. Even looking back at my critiques, now that I've finished it I see the *general* logic behind the writer's decisions even if it didn't end up being the fast paced action novel that I wanted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯...more
I’ve come to the conclusion that I read this series so that my followers didn’t have to
[image]
Listen y’all, TA White is a STABLE in my bookshelves aI’ve come to the conclusion that I read this series so that my followers didn’t have to
[image]
Listen y’all, TA White is a STABLE in my bookshelves and I expected this series to contain her iconic strong heroine, complex plot twists, and hot love interest that she usually delivers. But this series is a DRAFT compared to her other works. While the premise is unique as fuck with funny characters, finishing this series leaves me with such a bland taste in my mouth.
So most of my critiques of the MC Tate haven’t been fixed at all
She doesn’t work well with others “She let out a heavy sigh and faced the Black Order's representatives. "Why is it that every time I'm called in for a mediation, there is very little actual mediation happening and a surplus of running around just trying to stay alive?”\
She strongly in denial of fucking everything about herself
She's stubborn as fuck *okay fine I like this quality* “It's forward or perish," she told him. "And I refuse to let this be my end.”
She can’t follow plans “Dewdrop covered a wide yawn with his hand. "When they sent you here, I don't think it was to threaten the Order with death every time they did something to irritate you.”
She has like 0 logic or thought process
[image]
Also apparently her amnesia just never went away. In the series, we got sneak peaks into her identity implied that its really fucking important. But she really never tried to learn more about her past self. And she just never got her memory back which is just so fucking weird to me
[image]
And yet i keep reading for the unique premise and amazing side characters
The Dewdrop Night gang going strong and i still just totally love them. I’m sad they’ll never really get an ending or own spinoff series
“And I’m your family, Night promised. Which is why if you try to talk Dewdrop or me into letting you do this alone, I will rip your arm off.” “Here I am, trying to have a memorable moment, and you threaten me. Sometimes I regret rescuing you from that cage.”
I will actually miss these two guys a lot now that the series *abruptly* ended
Also where did Blade go?
Tate’s dragon Ilith
So Tate isnt a dragon.. she turns into a dragon who has their own mindset goals. Basically she blacks out and becomes a toddler that breathes fire
“I’m assuming training didn't go according to plan," Tate said. His lips quirked. "Yes, your dragon's inability to fly was most unexpected. It was humorous until she refused to transform back and then started crying for food." Tate cringed. Yes, she remembered something to that effect. Her dragon had no shame”
But her dragon also made no sense considering the connections earlier with the other dragons bowing and respecting Tate’s dragon like ROYALTY and yet she acts like a useless baby dragon
One thing I still haven’t figure out is how Tate is able to talk to her dragon. Everyone else says thats a sign of insanity…. soo… actually yah no that would explain a lot
And they have funny banter back and forth “Never outnumbered. We are dragon, was the emphatic statement. "You nearly died last time, stupid," Tate muttered.” “That was past. Now is now, Ilith said, sounding philosophical. "That was only four days ago," Tate reminded her.”
And then there's this fucker, Ryu
“Do you remember when I was dying?" she asked him, her throat clogged and her voice was rougher than it should have been. "You told me I didn't have your permission to die. Well, the same goes for you. Whatever this is, you need to beat it and come back and help me solve this debacle. Do you hear me? I'm getting tired of waiting for you. Open your eyes, Ryu.”
He never fully redeemed himself in my eyes. His dickishness from the first book with zero trust or support while sending her on dangerous jobs MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE when in this book he claimed he has loved her when first saw her. Well that a hell of a way to show it bucko.
But this book definitely made more of an effort to build chemistry between Tate and Ryu
The creativity!!
This series continues to tempt and tease me with its interesting premise and witty lines that keep me reading despite my overstated objections to the heroine and her backstory
“Two dragons, a teenage banshee, a couple of bearcats, an Avertine with suspicious motivations, and a guardian who looked like he'd be more at home in an archive cataloging books. Not who she would have picked to infiltrate the Harridan's city, but you made do with what you had and hoped for the best.”
Like how fucking creative is that line??!?! That scenario ?!?! And yet the execution just didn’t quite fulfill it.
One thing I really loved was scrapping the flashbacks method and having this new magical old lady badass character that remembers the first time Tate walked the earth.
It honestly made me want to know more about past Tate than any other method used in this goddamn series because she must've been such a badass with how respected and loyal the gypsies are to her
“I regret I will not get to see you teach a new generation the meaning of your name, but I will look forward to the stories told." "Not going to lie, I'm hoping those stories are boring and uneventful," Tate said. The Ahnteela snorted as a chuckle escaped. "You always say that, yet somehow you always manage to be right in the thick of things.”
but… we never learn more about their friendship… or more about old Tate… or have current Tate make any character development. It was just stifling
This book definitely isn't supposed to be the ending of the series, I guess the author just stopped ?? I’m not kidding, this book is clearly set up to continue the series with us -- finally figuring out the last of Tate’s identity details, let the ship with her and Ryu sail, Dew and Night find happiness, and just some ending SOME GODDAMN ENDING. Instead, we get another info dump and a TBD that I guess is never coming. See what I mean?? It was a fun series with great characters. But if you are considering this series. I’m telling you right now, there was NO real payoff.
TA White is one of my favorite authors and I expected this series to deliver her usual strong heroine, complex plot twists, and hot love interest. And it had all those elements which kept me reading the series. But there no real pay off with the series. Even if there was another book after this one, i would be reading it to just find out what happened, not to enjoy the world like I usually am. And that says a lot....more
Its a good book. There I said it. It has the right elements, good characters and interesting premise. But it struggles as a series.
The heroine’s backIts a good book. There I said it. It has the right elements, good characters and interesting premise. But it struggles as a series.
The heroine’s backstory makes no sense with her current self. The series doesn’t seem to have any real direction/goal besides learning more about Tate’s identity. The writing is funny, but clearly one of TA White’s earlier books with the rough editing and rocky buildup. I will never reread this series. But I will finish it. So take that as you will.
So lets get into it ... Tate Fisher has joined the Emperor’s dragon corps. *finally* she acknowledges her dragon powers and is actually working on controlling/using them
However, now that she’s joined this elite position that everyone fears/honors. She learns that there is a whole SLEW of enemies who covet dragons’ power both inside and outside the kingdom *welll fuck*
A kid --she has a vague connection to-- goes missing and her search takes her to the dark gritty parts of the city that hold the most truth… even if its not the one she wanted
The mystery element made this book wayyyy more entertaining and interesting to follow along. I still hate that she is constantly the newbie in every book somehow… but she is the only one willing to risk her life for others without really a second thought. So that gives her some brownie points to me .
Ryu. God he is a still a bastard. But he is toning down the whole manipulating element and we actually seeing a relationship bloom between the two in the most violent way possible *fingerguns*
“What exactly is it you want from me?” Ryu asked with exasperation. “At times, it almost seems like you care—about our kind, about me—but then you head off by yourself and take stupid risks.”
Mhmm sure like he wasn’t the reason she got into those hot messes in the first place, putting her in danger for a secret plot side meaning he couldn’t deign to trust her with
Its almost as if the author remembered that Ryu is the love interest and needs SOME redeeming quality, so she threw his protective instincts into overdrive to try and convince us that he not as shitty as we think from the past 2 fucking book
“You will not leave me," a voice filled with dark promise told her. "You will not die. You don't have my permission. Do you understand?”
Okay fine it worked, Ryu’s alphaness starting to grow on me hehe
[image][image]
This series continues to wow me with its SECONDARY CHARACTERS! I friggen love Night the monster cat, and Dewdrop the thief turned turned BFF. They continue to be a solid group with Tate in their loyalty, funny banter, and own stories.
“Dewdrop shook his head in aggravation. " This is why I can't leave. Only you would think a rescue attempt consisted of being kidnapped yourself." "It worked, didn't it?" she defended. "You got stabbed in the chest," he accused. "But I didn't die. Things turned out exactly how they were supposed to," she said with a haughty sniff.”
As a beast, Night is applying for official protection and rights to be seen as a sentient creature while Dewdrop’s past as a GYPSY is coming into play. Both of those are such interesting well-thought and developed character elements that I friggen adored how the author continues to make themselves unique and established… not just tagalong side characters. Wait a second, do I like the secondary character’s side plot lines better than the heroine’ story ???
The worldbuilding continues like its an intro book where we slowly getting revelations we get more facts about Tate and her dragon Ilith in how they bonded came to be and the whole sleeper element.
She’s still learning the empire royal dynamic. The servants being a hilarious addition bringing comedy to otherwise boring plot developments
“He straightened and spoke, sounding as if he was reciting a message. "My Lord Ryuji has sent me to request your presence." "What's the exact message?" The man straightened, his face smoothing into placid lines as he recited, "Get your ass out of bed and hightail it up to headquarters now.”
My main complaint of the disconnect between old life Tate and current Tate still continues to be gaping plot hole. I guess what Im trying to say is *clears throat* SHE’S A FUCKING PUSHOVER
Its just this weird dynamic of Tate being a total pushover with the other badasses … then they refuse to tell her diddly shit … then she goes off all reckless and and stupid and ruins all the plans put in motion she had no clue about.
Tate is supposed to be this ancient, uber dragon but she lets EVERYONE trample all over her.
No one tells her anything *cough Ryu cough* then she runs off trying to figure out things that other have been taught over course of years and causes everything to explode from her rashness
Now I have more questions than I started with. By the third of the series, the readers should have some idea of where the series going — who’s the bad guys, what’s the main problem we trying to even solve here. But we are still firmly planted in the buildup where we still don't have most of the facts and it looks like each book will continue to be a series of coincidences where we find out another fact about Tate and solve the problem at hand. which isn't bad but isn't my cup of tea either.
I’d like to take this moment to talk about the titles.
They make no fucking sense.
The first book is called "Dragon ridden" in which our heroine never learns about her powers and denies she has any dragon abilities. uhhhh The second is called "Bone and Ruin"… well okay there was a skeleton and everything went to shit Now we at "Destruction’s ascent" and I not really sure how/if its related to the book
The first of a new series should WOW you. It should knock you off your feet, and make you wanna come back for more. This?! This was intriguing but witThe first of a new series should WOW you. It should knock you off your feet, and make you wanna come back for more. This?! This was intriguing but with an oddly unspecific taste to it.
Meet Tate
Tate doesn’t remember anything about herself.
We know more about Tate than Tate does.
We're introduced to naive girl character who is basically making shit up as she goes… And are told that she was a warrior soldier in a previous life
[image][image]
She suppose to be a hardened badass awakened with no memories, but her POV didn't match it. While reading her character was *admittedly* fun and sassy, it was just in such a contrast with what we were TOLD about her
Also.. that cover ?? like Stairs?! You write a fantasy with pirates dragons and magic... and have a cover of some fucking stairs? *shaking my goddamn head*
The secondary characters First the ones I liked...
Dewdrop a young pickpocket and thief. Night a cute cat beast thingy that communicates via telepathy. I lowkey him as pictured Toothless from how to train dragons for this haha
“Did you really have to let him come with us?” Dewdrop asked, leaning into her. “So he can control water,” Tate said, waving his words away. “Your scream can rupture internal organs. I have no past and Night is a monster cat. We’re not exactly in a position to cast stones.”
The best part and reason why I’ll keep reading is this group of Tate, Night and Dew. We got this hilarious hint of her future fun misfit crew that I really want to see developed in the next books instead of just instafriending
Now the other ones.... Jost the pirate captain from the ship that first picked her up and she escaped. He is a manipulative dick.
Ryu one of the pirates on ship *but theres def more to him than that* who irks her to no end and is wayyy to observant. He is also a manipulative dick.
“Ryu eyed her suspiciously, as if he knew she was keeping something back. She quickly rearranged her features to reflect innocence and honesty. Nothing hidden here. No lie has touched these lips.”
Blade badass assasssinnnn for the local crew
“You’re a thief aren’t you? All thieves can be called to him.” “I’m not a thief,” Tate said, outraged. “Why does everyone keep assuming that?” Blade opened his hands wide as if to say, what can you do?”
Can I ship her with blade?
I’m gonna be honest, it seemed like most of the ‘good’ guys and bad guys were equally douches and manipulating her in this book *cough Ryu cough*
She was caught in a bigger plot where she didn’t have the resources, allies, or memories to be able to really play the game on the same level as the rest of them
“Reluctantly she said, “What’s surprising is how often I’m called odd or strange or unique. Why, I’m told that so often, I’m almost beginning to believe it. To me, you are the strange ones. Kidnapping random people off the street, only to tell them they’re odd, is much stranger.”
Worldbuilding which was greatly affected by her aMnEsIa Tate doesn’t remember shit about who/what she is, her past, or her current world
“Like magic?” Tate asked incredulous. “You gave me magic stones.” Something in her voice must have hinted at her disbelief. “Tate, magic exists.” “Really? Because Trent’s experience would suggest otherwise.”
We are just as clueless as the her. Constantly trying to figure out the characters, the world, just everything. The character couldn’t explain shit to us, so a lot didn’t make sense and I felt I needed to put wayyy 2 much effort into figuring out what the fuck is happening
But we get these flashbacks of her past that only the audience remembers
[image]
Flashbacks or dream memories can be a really useful trick to introduce details that will later become important! But it wasn’t *quite* done right. Some scenes felt random. Some flashbacks didn’t really add value to our book and just took away from the present plot. Plus I had hard time distinguishing what Tate knew vs what we knew about her so that just turned into a confusion
[image]
Yet even with these annoying gaps and even worse attempts at fixing them, I still enjoyed her POV… she was willing to fight dirty and actually had some survival instincts *thank fucking christ*
“A small part of her had always wanted to see how she’d fare against him. She’d cheat of course. When you’re smaller and weaker than everybody else, you had to even the odds somehow. Only a slim scrap of sense had kept her from challenging him.”
Overall… fuck I can’t even decide if I liked this book. Its basically a YA with swearing. I loved the side characters. I liked the blending of mages, pirates, cat people and merpeople. The idea of Dragon ridden was a really unique concept of human bonding with powers of dragons but this aspect wasn’t really developed at all in this book ?? We don’t learn any background about other dragonridden. Tate doesn’t find out any more to develop her own powers.
Theres clearly a bigger mystery at part that later books will build up to it. But as a first book of a series with the word DRAGON in it, it definitely failed in that aspect. I wanted more buildup instead of the gaps in everything that leaves me wondering what do I even know about this book and what does Tate know.
“You will in time, Tatum Alegra Winters.” Of course the creepy child robot/god/being knows her real name
Oh please please mama let this book continue to build up towards its full potential [image]...more
I am a total sucker for the dragon tropes. And when this book’s premise Tate. You had ONE goddamn job.
to STOP people from KiLliNg EACH OTHER.
I am a total sucker for the dragon tropes. And when this book’s premise was dragon abilities connected to a wicked looking dragon tattoo??
Im intrigued, please continue
The plot creatively brings together more details about the world building, that was sorely missing in the first. We officially meet the three power groups of the empire and I love how unique and different each one was.
The humans as uppidity mages and scholars. The Kairi as terrifying merpeople with strong honorbound values. And the Silva as the powerful animal shifters but often dismissed as barbarians
Together, these 3 groups are the united empire. And they all fucking hate each other.
So naturally, Tate is asked to mediate a political summit between them.
What do we know about Tate? She has amnesia. She has dragon tattoo, ergo dragon powers. And she’s a sassy little shit
“Wasn’t it you who said Ryu was a misbegotten son of an ass who couldn’t be trusted not to make everyone else as miserable as he was?” “That was you.” Tate paused and frowned. That’s right.”
There still seems to be a very large disconnect between old life Tate: hardened warrior, soldier, badass. And our current Tate: teasing sassy dragon in training
[image]
Current Tate is thrown into situations that past Tate would have the skills and memories to easily deal with. But right now, she a dum dum, who is way over her head.
“Gabriella held up one finger. “You’re involved in an event that intersects with three of the most powerful people in the empire. None of whom like each other.” She held up another finger. “You’re the first female dragon in known history. Your existence is bound to shake things up. Create enemies. Anyone standing next to you had better be prepared for a wild time.”
I loveddd the intro of Gabrielle who I really hope comes back later, she had such a confident bloodthirsty amazon warrior vibe. Maybe she can teach Tate some of that
[image][image]
Ryu is still a manipulative dick…. but now he sorta including Tate in his scheming
“Then do so,” Ryu snapped back. “Try not to get poisoned, kidnapped or tortured for the next day and maybe I won’t be prone to overreacting.”
5 seconds later …
“Tate, so glad we could meet again,” Lucius said from the other side of the carriage. Tate sighed. Ryu was never going to let her live this down.
She gets KIDNAPPED BY EVERYONE… which is really annoying and Mary-Sue passive bleh vibes
But then Ryu was the gall to blame her for it !?!?!
Now for the big reveal. I am so goddamn happy with how TA built the cute squad of misfits
[image]
Night the monster cat, and Dewdrop the thief turned buddy are some awesome characters. Their loyalty and dynamic with Tate is actually what made me like her better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
“You’re kind of crazy, you know that?” Gabriella said. “Oh yes,” Dewdrop responded. “We are well aware, but it’s the kind of crazy that usually works out in the end.” “And you follow her willingly?” “I’d take her crazy over the self-interest and self-involvement of others every time.”
Looking back, I realize where this series really kinda bugged me. I love the characters. I hate Tate’s backstory. I love the premise. I hate the world-developing that felt incomplete. Group dynamic is hilarious. Ryu is a prick. Theres cool cat and merpeople. Blade isn’t the love interest.
Its this constant back and forth battle happening while I was reading, and I kept going because I saw it getting better. But its not necessarily improving at a rate for me to look back and say ‘Yah I enjoy the book’ . But mama didn’t rise no quitter and I’m too invested in Dew and Night that I gotta know how the series ends for them
The rest of this review will be me riffing on Tate’s character ———————————————————————————————————
The badass gets sent to school. I’m not fucking kidding. AND THEN DOESN’T EVEN TRY TO LEARN.
The whole beginning is just scenes of her complaining about getting access to knowledge *wtf*. She gets bored easily during the lectures ABOUT HER OWN ABILITIES
This was such a whiny teenager attitude that made no sense with the history and past that we coming to find out about her.
She a magical badass in ancient important time? But she still don’t wanna know more about her own abilities? That makes no fuckign sense
The denial on her part just made everything all the more annoying. It was like pulling teeth trying to get her to progress in her own story.
She was content to just dick around in her townhouse with her buddies Dew and Night. How was she ever one of the soldiers that sacrificed herself for people??
iM bOrEd
Also it only took getting to the second fucking book but Tate is finally reacting to the character dynamics from the first book— the betrayal
“Instead, they waited until things boiled over and she discovered the truth on her own. It was the first time she’d felt less than. Less than a friend. Less than crew. Less than a thinking person with feelings.”
Okay at least now she has feelings. The end....more
This is a fun, fast-paced fantasy romance featuring dragons and a heroine who has survival instincts cranked up to EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF
“It’s a litThis is a fun, fast-paced fantasy romance featuring dragons and a heroine who has survival instincts cranked up to EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF
“It’s a little cowardly on our part, but I’m honestly prepared to shove her right off a cliff if that’s the option we have.”
[image][image]
But....
The unique heroine's backstory never came back into play. bummer
The reverse harem was hella PG and barely started getting really fun in the last two books. goddamnit
I don't remember enough of the individual book plots cuz that they weren't strong enough to stand by themselves i dunno
Overall, it was this constant back and forth of me wanting more. And never getting it. I liked the idea of the heroine having a background in training magical creatures. I hated that it was just an excuse to meet the love interests. I loved how goddamn morally grey each of these characters was in their own unique hilarious way. I hated that the plot did not challenge them enough to really show off their abilities. See what I mean?
This likely won't ever be a re-read but it was enjoyable. Just honest to god, looking back I wished that the plot was more intense and planned throughout the five books and that it was sexier as one expects for a reverse harem *shrugs*...more
But good god, I wish the heroine would get a brain and thArlow, Rime, Chaos, Kain and Sinister
dammnnnn, that reverse harem coming along nicely
[image]
But good god, I wish the heroine would get a brain and the plot would get a clue
[image]
This series started out hella cute and fun! But now I just feel like the world isn’t fitting for the formidable characters in it
There isn't nearly enough traveling outside into the world to see the other magics. The whole series we are stuck inside small villages or inside castles. Its BORING.
Arlow isn't able to showcase her magical beast training which would be EXTREMELY handy when building an army. And the dragons gotta hide their abilities 80% of the time to build boats ??? are you fucking kidding me?”
Imagine these funny awesome characters on an actual real adventure, it would be epic
“Nice sailing, Captain.” Rime dusts his jeans off as he stands. Ah, what if longer then a second passed and they didn’t antagonize each other? The world may never know.”
.. also why are all the women characters really selfish and shitty to each other?? Can we get one positive female relationship, please?
If you're bored and just wanna laugh at some ridiculous hot dragon shifter shenanigans then I'd recommend trying it out. Because it definitely made me laugh and made me want more. But I never got more. It would've been great if each book built a stronger plot to give the characters more opportunities to bond and work together. But the series is more about hot sex, sass comments, and.... yah no thats about it...more
Ya know how some people say how much they lOvE their characters and could read them doing literally doing any goddamn thing
Well that’s all this book Ya know how some people say how much they lOvE their characters and could read them doing literally doing any goddamn thing
Well that’s all this book fucking is *flails arms*
[image]
“I’m going to get some air,” I whisper to Kain. “You’re outside, try again, Low.” Aggie doesn’t look at me as she says it, taking another big gulp from her glass.”
The dragon shifters are back! Chaos, Rime, and Kain
They are honestly the reason I keep reading because of how unique their backstories and characters are. Plus they are hot as fuck.
This was just a character-developing book. It's fun because we see what “normal” everyday life is like for them ... But plot?? Advancing the series goal ?? Learning more info ?? Nahhhh, write in more dragon sex
So yeah this book is just fun kinda has a bunch of random shit happening that doesn't really have any contribution to the series.
But I kept reading because ... it was just funny I guess
“So why were you dancing like that?” “No one fucks with the local crazy woman. They leave me in peace to ward off the lingering spirits.” My brows tense. “Do you know how to ward off lingering spirits, Aggie?” “Not a fucking clue. I used to specialize in Sight Seeing”
In an ideal world... ✨ the village has a past that contributes knowledge about magic or dragon world to help Arlow ✨ the bad guy has spies in the village himself that sneaks information ✨ Arlow's background as a magic beast tamer has more relevance cuz honestly that was a cool job and more magical beasts would've made the worldbuilding stronger and more unique
This series definitely has some potential but it clearly is just a fun reverse harem so I guess I gotta just lower my standards and enjoy it as it goes. I would recommend the first book but honestly, the fun quality and development of the first book does not continue to build up in the rest of the series-- it sorta plateaued.
Meet Arlow: She’s a magical beast trainer — hiding her mage abilities under everyone's nose
And she has gotten a payoff to finally set herself up for Meet Arlow: She’s a magical beast trainer — hiding her mage abilities under everyone's nose
And she has gotten a payoff to finally set herself up for life: 3 dragons eggs
Unfortunately, they turn out to be hot dragon shifters Chaos, Rime, and Kain
And they are hunting for a mage … oh thats fucking good hehe
[image][image]
This set-up of the world and plot was hilarious and unique, with Arlow trying to hide her identity while the dragons try to use her knowledge of the city to find the mage they desire.
I was so excited to see a heroine with self-preservation skills. She ain't gonna sacrifice herself to the first *albeit hot* guys she meets
“Let’s go to Agatha’s for now. I’ll get supplies there.” “Supplies. Like abnormal witchy supplies for your witch magic?” Kain’s tone is cold and angry and, when I stand, my shirt skimming against the smooth panes of his chest, he doesn’t flinch away. “No, like normal average supplies and average clothes for your average cock.”
And sassy to boot! But then.... she sorta kinda total acts like a selfish brat. Who can't see past her own struggles
“Chaos chose them, his friends. I’m not really mad he didn’t stand up for me.” Bitch you wanted to (view spoiler)[SELL THEM (hide spoiler)] even AFTER FINDING OUT THEY SHIFTERS *DAFU*
[image][image]
The dynamic between the three shifters was fucking HILARIOUS and you could obviously tell they had a strong bond. This made the reverse harem even more fun with the three of them learning to trust and let Arlow into their group
"Water clings to his steps, leaving puddles in his wake. “ You’re making everything wet.” I curse myself the moment I say it. “No need to scream about your wetness, Arlow.” He walks backward, and he holds my gaze as the serious look settles back into his eyes. “I just wanted you to know that it didn’t feel like nothing to me.” He pauses just long enough for his rumbling tone to sink into me. “I wanted you to feel that.”
They were also hella serious about consent and that made it all even hotter than hell
[image]
I honestly just loved this book for the characters. Chaos, Rime and Kain each had their own strong personalities as the sweetie, the angsty one, and the protector
But they was all dumb as hell and couldn't figure out who the mage was
“You left?” Confusion lingers in his eyes. “Without me? The whole point of me being here is to protect you from that mage.” Aww. He’s trying to protect me from myself. What a cute idiot.”
Y'all know I love dragons. But the logistics of these dragons kinda confused. (view spoiler)[ They were eggs at first (but previously were alive and walking, how did they get back into eggs?) then they were stuck in dragon form having to grow but then could shift into fully grown humans ?? (hide spoiler)]
I just had a hard time because once I pictured them as (view spoiler)[ baby dragons (hide spoiler)], I continued to picture them as (view spoiler)[ tiny baby dragons (hide spoiler)] which kinda took me out of the fantasy of them being hot man shifters.
Overall, a fun novel I'd definitely recommend giving a try if you like reverse harems that build up the trust and sexy dragon shifters....more
Ryn our phaetyn (view spoiler)[ Drae (hide spoiler)] is back. And we are both completely head-over-feels for the love interest Tyrrik
The second book highlighted the enemies to lovers trope with Ryn in complete denial over her feelings. This third continued their awesome relationship dynamic as they shifted into the roles of power couple-- wanting to support each other through bad jokes and bodily harm as needed
They had their cute banter moments. They had their ... disagreements
“You can’t protect me from everything, Tyrrik. That is not a burden I want you to carry. No one should have to.” “It is who I am!” he roared. “I am a Drae. You are mine to protect. It is my privilege and my purpose”
And they made weird-ass squirrel jokes to keep calm before going into battle
“We’ll be okay, my love. I’ll make it okay. And there is some good news. Yeah? You defeated the one-eyed squirrel as I slept? I quipped. Tyrrik’s joy at my humor radiated through our bond. No, he said solemnly. He still runs rampant, leading a life of debauchery. Worse, he’s inspiring others to join his band of nefarious villainy. Did I think that one day I’d be flying next to Lord Nightmare listening to his jokes about squirrels? Not for a second. Obviously, it was the little things for him. We’re heading the wrong way then. He’s the real enemy.”
It was just friggen hilarious reading as the two navigated to be a couple WHILE organizing kingdoms for a fight WHILE learning their different abilities. To be completely honest, I reread this series just for Tyrrik’s character arc that he undergoes!
꧁Worldbuilding꧂
I honestly just adore this world and the writing style of the author. It brought a completely new twist to the shapeshifting, evil dragon king, heroine learning powers cliches.
“We have an emperor to kill, I said to Tyrrik conversationally as I cut through a potato and popped it into my mouth. He swallowed his mouthful and poured more gravy onto his chicken. Yes, my love. We do.”
The plot picks up to show the ramifications after Ryn has visited all the kingdoms. Now they just all need to not kill each other work together in order to fight the invading emperor and heal their lands !
Teamworks makes the dream work
Also the author had a creative take on dragons which is not easy to do! The possessiveness over treasure and pure hedonism was completely on par with how a narcissistic baby dragon would be. Don't even TRY to tell me that IF YOU SUDDENLY TURNED INTO A DRAGON that you wouldn't admire YOUR BEAUTIFUL SCALES and WANT A PILE OF TREASURE.
[image] [image]
꧁Secondary Characters꧂
It was pretty great seeing Ryn interact with other major players in this world with Lani, Kamoi, and Prince Zarad.
While she does have some ✨chosen one vibes✨, she definitely isn't a battle general or kingdom leader. And I really liked that. One character does not have to be ALL the special things.
”My M-word often said no to things, lots of things, really. I decided then and there to translate the word as yes from now on. I said to Lani, “Great, so when do we leave?”
Overall, I love this series for the creative world, the great characters and plot. But as a finale book, I have a couple critiques.
The stylistic choices for the main character’s reverted personality to naivity with the nonstop jokes that came across as -- I don't care--. For a lotta people, the resurgence of Ryn's juvenile personality was inexcusable and they were unable to look past her youthful written perspective. I’m not gonna lie, it was pretty cringe even for YA. She says 'pancakes' as a curse word and refers to sex as 'dancing the maypole'
And I gotta admit that it did get lili annoying at times, it away from the intended danger and adventure elements. But I tried to just enjoy her inner dialogue as a hilarious element to narrate the dangerous situations because that is her coping mechanism
Also, remember that stupidly specific torture stuff from the first book that the author was totally flexing on their torture knowledge? Its backkkkk ! Why?!
The side plot interactions with the emperor and the backstory of her mother, was frankly disturbing and awkward to read.
It felt unnecessary.
I really didn't need those details AT ALL! And honestly have no idea what purpose that tangent was suppose to serve for the reader, except take up pages from our cute couple. It didn't humanize the emperor at all and only seemed to gear them up for a battle THAT THEY WERE ALREADY PLANNING ON DOING.
That choice really took away from this book as a finale that that time would've been better spent (1) power training (2) the kingdoms working together (3) looking for a secret weapon (4) organizing the rest of Drae to fight (5) literally anything else besides being stuck in (view spoiler)[his harem (hide spoiler)] hoping they will have sex so (view spoiler)[ he can take their baby (hide spoiler)]*wtf*
So would I recommend this series? Absolutely ! It's a really great dragon book. I get that this series is also pretty easy to hate on. There are clearly some issues with this series and you could spend the whole time critiquing it. But the fun characters, unique magic & worldbuilding kept me intrigued and re-reading this series almost yearly. And I don't say that about a lottta books.
I fuckingg told y’all the second one was better!! [image]
Remember in the first book, where our heroine's entire personality was that she didn’t know dI fuckingg told y’all the second one was better!! [image]
Remember in the first book, where our heroine's entire personality was that she didn’t know diddly shit about her powers??
NO MORE
Both Ryn and the world is really developed in this book, so we get to learn more about the Drae and Phaetyn ! We *finally* venture outside the goddamn castle to see the other kingdoms and cultures *fist pump*
If you like dragons, then you should absolutely read this series
[image]
Ryn, She’s naive. She’s immature. But fuck it, at least she trying to save the world
“I glanced back at Tyrrik. He was still lying right where I’d left him, looking pretty much dead. “Good, good.” I gave myself an inane pep talk, not believing a word of it.”
Her inner dialogue was just hilarious to read and brought a comedic element to otherwise dangerous threatening situations as she visits other kingdoms to rally the troops! Her POV is purposefully sarcastic & dramatic cuz its her coping mechanism to deal with the shit storm that is her life
The absolutely BEST part of this book was the group dynamics by farrr
Honestly, this misfit of characters Dyter, Tyrikk and Ryn was friggen hilarious to read, as they had to *reluctantly* work with each other to fight the invading emperor, reestablish their kingdom, heal the land and figure out where the fuck the Drae and Phaetyn been hiding !! Oh and try not to kill each other in the process
[image]
Dyter being father figure to Ryn, and matchmaker for Tyrikk. Tyrikk being a scary badass who is finally free and doesn't have to hide his every emotion *don'tcry don't cry*And Ryn going from village soapqueen to a real power player in the world. She struggles between hating Tyrikk but needing to ally with him.
“My brief flash of good humor disappeared. “It’s Tyrrik’s fault. He’s sulking.” “I’m not sulking,” the one-hundred-and-nine-year old said. “Mmm-hmm, sure.” Dyter exploded. “Enough!” He whirled on us, stomping back to wave a finger in my face. “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t speak at all.” “That’s what we were doing before,” I huffed. “You said it made you cranky.” By this point, I was needling the old man, but I craved an outlet for my frustration, and he’d offered one.”
Now... the love interest
Tyrikk hurt Ryn in the first book and well… she will never let him forget it
The way book *accurately* developed the enemies to lovers trope was sooo well done with building up the chemistry. It was definitely a, *The lady douth protest too much* but I just fell heads over hells for Tyrrik and loveddd the banter between them
[image]
“You ruined my tavern!” I grabbed at Tyrrik, and he lowered his head. Holding either side of his Drae face, I narrowed my eyes at his slightly sheepish expression. “You are so paying for that,” I snarled, staring into his inky eyes. I released his head and sank to my knees. “Everything . . . I’ve worked for. In ruins.” Tyrrik nudge me with his snout. "You’ve only been here three days.”
Side note: have y'all seeennnn this cover?? fucking art!
The world is just fucking brilliant. Shape shifting, dragon empire, heroine learning powers, plots of overthrowing tyrannical kings, and did I mention dragons? Where the first book has several problems but no actual plot *wtf*. This second book builds ups the great antagonist, explains the world better, and Ryn works to find her place in it.
Overall, I love this book because of the unique characters and how the dragons element was really developed in a unique way. First, its a female of a friggen 18 year old who is only FIRST leaving her village on top of being a NEW dragon... and her POV absolutely reflects that!
She gets easily distracted and possessive of treasure, she doesn't fully understand why but she knows it'll make her happy so she just does it! and fuck, isn't that *absolutely* the mentality that a dragon would have?!
“My mouth dried as I saw what he held aloft. Playing it cool, I asked, “What’s that?” “A gold trinket.” Desire shot through me, and I propped myself up, licking my lips. “What kind of trinket?” “It’s an antique pill box that once belonged to an esteemed baroness.” He tossed the pill box in his hand. “Want it?” “The gold beckoned me. It was just what this cave needed. A bit of sparkling wealth. Actually, I needed it. I got to my feet and murmured, “Yes.”
The critiques
Ryn... overdid the guilt thing... by a friggen landslide
[image][image]
I know we going for a hard to get vibe . But it was overdone and made other more *important* elements get overshadowed by Ryn's dramatic ranting
For those that didn't read the first, you might get *even more annoyed* by this aspect as why Ryn so fucking dumb, I just had the mindset she a petty bitch and just went with it.
Highly recommend for a fun fast-pace fantasy. It's action packed, has a unique take on dragons, a comedic heroine, and you get to interact with different kingdoms that each have their own culture and differences. Plus the love interest is a total babe.
This second book had completely different feeling than the first book in this series, that I preferred because it matched Ryn's personality better. She was too lighthearted and young for the dark vibes of the first, that I felt a total disconnect between the character and her actions. Let's be real... a young girl getting kidnapped tortured for a YEAR would have a MUCH darker attitude after the fact. But Ryn didn't. Which is why I basically pretend the first book didn't happen... because it didn't match the characters. Authors, you can't have characters remain unaffected by the events YOU WROTE
And now to end with another quote because it just made me fucking cAcKlE and roll on the floor at how Ryn's dragon is such a *baby* but tries so hard to be a baddie
“He turned to the guards and announced us. “We seek an audience with King Zakai. Please inform him that Lord Tyrrik the . . . Free Drae, Dyter of Verald—ambassador to King Caltevyn, and Ryn are here.” I practically gave myself Drae whiplash at that. I lowered my head to Dyter, a low growl rumbling in my chest. Shouldn’t I be Ryn the Coolest Drae, or Ryn the Phaetyn-Drae? Or maybe Ryn the Phaetyn-Drae, daughter of Ryhl— Dyter eyed me nervously and blurted, “I mean to say, Ryn the most powerful Drae.”
When we first meet our heroine, Ryn, she the accumulation of everything I hate. She’s naive. She’s immature. She knows nothing about the powe[image]
When we first meet our heroine, Ryn, she the accumulation of everything I hate. She’s naive. She’s immature. She knows nothing about the powers and in complete denial about having them. She was a YA heroine thrown into an adult universe
Looking back now, I see that Ryn was just starting out naive. But by the end of book, she has become a fully realized character, capable and cunning, ready to fight.... Just why did we have to wait fucking 300 pages for that **tears*. This was just a shitty start to a great series.
Pause. But can we just stop and appreciate --->That fucking cover!!! *chef's kiss*
HOWEVER!! What really pulls this book together (and reason I kept going in the series...)
The world is just fucking brilliant. Shape shifting, dragon empire, heroine learning powers, plots of overthrowing tyrannical kings, and did I mention dragons?
“My mouth opened and closed several times before I could string together my words. Finally, I said, “You just threw that pebble in your hand and killed a man.” “Yes,” Irrik said. “The king instructed me to protect you.” “Pretty sure he didn’t mean at the expense of killing his guards” I replied
[image]
See what I mean?? It has great elements but failed to actually engage the readers in it DURING the book itself. Looking back, it honestly feels like a Prequel with meeting the heroine and world because it isn’t till the second book that we gloriously get thrown into the middle of an amazing book adventure.
As a first book, the author failed to engage this awesome world with her readers. Instead we were trapped in a bubble— knowing ✨ dragon ✨ rebel ✨ war ✨ shit is happening but we are stuck reading about Ryn being tortured... sigh ノಥ益ಥ)ノ
It is ONLY because I continued with the series, that I know the author eventually finds their bearings and fully redeems themselves in the second book *to me*
Where the first is literal word vomit. The second book focuses more on character dynamic. Where the first book has several problems, info dumping, but no actual plot *dafq*. The second book builds ups the great antagonist, explains the world better, and Ryn works to find her place in it.
Also… just a little heads up
The amount of torture in this book was …. stupidly excessive. I’m not gonna lie, there were parts I was like *why da fuck is the author being so SPECIFIC* about this haha
It was almost as if they had done all this research about torture and wanted to show it off or some shit
[image]
Either way, I much preferred the betrayal + intrigue that was entwined throughout the book where you never *quite* knew who to trust… and that made everything all the more delicious
“Certainly, he wouldn’t have deceived me, betrayed me, like that. His face was a smooth canvas, blank of all emotion. Void of everything. “You,” I choked”
Like come on, that’s a pretty damn good line and build up… just a bummer these great lines only came in at the end of the book
[image]
Overall, I enjoyed this book BECAUSE I know what's happening next and that the sequel redeems our characters and is written significantly better than the first. I know I know, I can't believe I said that either but its TRUE and I'm sticking to my guns. The first book itself was pretty decent read, *skimming the excessive torture* and I did enjoy a lot of the world building, which is why I continued with the series and was SO EXCITED that the author built upon the greatness of her characters AND finally gave them a world/plot fitting to them in the second and third book!
Here’s a quote that honestly show those *glimpses* of greatness that the author learned from the critiques and FULLY develops to be stronger in the second book *thank christ* Honestly she does a whole redemption arc and I happy that I continued with the series!
“Irrik ran his fingertips over the deep gash. Black blood dripped down his arm. “Did you . . . just attack me with a garden hoe?” “I rushed to him, crying out, “It had my blood on it!” My hands fluttered over the grotesque wound. “Tell me what to do. I don’t want it to kill you.” He moved to look at me, a curious expression falling over his face. “You regret hurting me?” “What? No. Well, killing you, yes.” My stomach rolled at the thought of murdering something, someone, anyone. “How long will it take to set in?” I asked him, trying to remain calm. “Should we try cutting off your arm?” Lord Irrik’s brows rose. “Cutting off . . . ?” He broke off and threw his head back in laughter. The gruff waves of it rolled across the potato field.”
