is it strange to be proud of an author? i feel incredibly proud of melanie cellier, having seen how much her books have improved just in the span of this series. having somehow made it this far, i actually find myself sad that there aren't more books specifically catered toward what these characters are doing.
the princess search quite literally has it all. characters with depth, an intriguing plot, details and settings that i could easily picture, and a romance that had been grinning to myself while i was listening to this book (usually i am poker-faced while reading absolutely anything, so i hope you see why this is significant).
overall, this was such a fun reading experience and i absolutely adored every moment of it. i'm not sure if i want to read the rest of cellier's books because i want to see where she goes from here or never read a fantasy/fairytale retelling ever again because this book has ruined me for them....more

honestly, though, the best part of this book is how it not only goes through evelyn's life and marriages, and all that happened to her and what she did to others, but makes her into a real person. it's easy to feel like you're falling down a wikipedia rabbit hole of a famous celebrity's past rather than sitting on your bed reading a book on your laptop while reading this. or at least, that's how it was for me.
harry was the best. i love harry. he has a special place in my heart and he will never lose it.
overall there are a lot of elements that came together to make this book as memorable as i think it is. there's romance, drama, secrets, lies, and just a bit of movie magic, and at the center of it all there's a woman with a story to share, and that's what makes this book just so enjoyable to read.

...But here's me ranting about this anyway :D
For context, I think it needs to be mentioned that I don't cry over books that often. As a result, some weird part of me seeks out all the 'tear-jerker' media I can get my hands on to see if it 'works' on me. (Typing this out makes me seem like even more of a weirdo than I already am/have accepted I am. If you're concerned, don't worry, because I'm concerned too.)
Strange habits aside, this manga was a terrible decision on my part. It left me a blubbering mess, and, having just watched the anime adaption (and crying over that as well!), it will definitely be taking up the free real-estate where common sense should live in my head on my mind for a while.
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas seems like, at first, just another doomed romance. Boy meets terminally ill girl. Girl changes boy's worldview, or vice versa. Boy and girl fall in love. Girl passes away, leaving boy brokenhearted, but better for the time they shared.
On the one hand, this could have turned out extremely trite, with characters working as living tropes and a storyline more predictable than the death of the character who walks into the basement during a horror movie.
But it wasn't. It *really* wasn't. This manga was just so life-affirming and emotionally impactful. (view spoiler)[Despite the fact that Sakura dies at the end, and that the cause of her death was unrelated to her medical condition, the manga shows us that life is worth living, through all of it, in the way that Sakura refused to let her illness define the way she lived the rest of her days. (hide spoiler)]
Apart from that, this story also explores what relationships mean to us and how they define us, and what it truly means to be alive. How people impact us in the same way we impact them. The innate beauty in being able to recognize ourselves in others, as living, breathing human beings.
The manga portrays everything in an incredibly beautiful way (I mean this literally; the art was amazing), and effectively appeals to your sense of humanity with how it deals with themes of morality, love, and loss. It truly makes you think and want to live.
By the time that I finished reading, I was absolutely emotionally drained. And physically, but that was probably because of the run my mom made me go on. I don't think I've ever cried so much over the fragility and virtue of human life.
Overall, this manga manages to be insightful without shoving weighty, profound pinnacles of philosophy into your head. It leaves you to draw your own conclusions without seeming patronizing, and maintains a healthy balance of humor and looming grief.
This manga was extremely reassuring and heartwarming, because despite all the melancholy it makes you go through to reach the end, ultimately, it's the masterpiece of a story of a boy and a girl, connected in the most unexpected way, and all that follows.

Truly, I'm not sure where toThank you to Netgalley and Wednesday Books for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
(actual rating: 4.5/5)
Truly, I'm not sure where to begin with this one.
To say that I loved this book would be an understatement. I lived a lifetime with this book. I cried over this book. I felt just about every emotion you could ever possibly feel with this book, and I loved every second of it.
Amelia Unabridged is an emotionally resonant young-adult novel that follows Amelia, the main character, after the death of her best friend, who was like a sister to her. The two met when Amelia's father left her and her mother, and both got into the same book series, the Orman Chronicles, written by a young prodigy. Following the loss of her friend, Amelia receives a special edition of her favorite book, and thinking that it was sent to her from her best friend, decides to seek out the reclusive author.
I've been delibirating on what to write about this book for a while now. I read this incredible book in March. It's August now. No matter what I say, no matter how many times I try to review this book, I can't seem to quite capture what exactly I experienced while reading this book.
For starters, this is Ashley Schumacher's debut novel, and I am beyond blown away - she's officially a favorite author of mine. The characters, including not just Amelia and Nolan but also Alex and Valerie, were so realistic, so lifelike - a testament to how deliberate and well-written this book is. Over the course of the story they grew into people with their own personalities, rather than just being the characters of a book.
The plot is, for the most part, character-driven. It's about Amelia and Nolan and how they make connections and flourish in the midst of all the grief they've experienced, but most of all, it's about their resilliance and how they still love despite what they've gone through. And that's exactly what had me sobbing into my pillow at 4 in the morning as I read this beautiful masterpiece.
That being said, as much as I enjoyed the relationship that blossomed between Amelia and Nolan, and the way they were able to help each other with their mutual love of books, I felt that the insta-love was quite serious with this one. And while they were both quite cute together, I can't see how this relationship is a realistic "solution" to grief either is experiencing. Dealing with grief is a long, painful process, so I suppose that despite how charming and tearjerker this book is, some willing suspension of disbelief is needed to really enjoy it.
I'm not sure what more I can say about this book. I love it with everything I have in me, and even now, just thinking about this book makes me smile.

This book was so charming and wonderful, therefore I don't think I will ever be able to properly review it. (That sentence took me 5 minutes to type. I am shooketh.)
I loved everything about this book, from the way that the simplistic writing made me feel immersed in the magic to the characters (but especially the characters. Can I marry Howl? Although, I feel like that will interfere with my ship because you knOW I SHIP IT LIKE CRAZY WITH HOWL ALWAYS BEING ADORABLY MELODRAMATIC AND SOPHIE BEING SO MATURE AND RESPONSIBLE AAAAHHH SOPHIE X HOWL OTP OTP OTP OT-)
*ahem*
(sorry you had to read that)
But seriously. These two are couple goals: [image] aaagaghg stop too cute too cute too cute
I really loved the characters' dynamic and the way that they were like a family (I'm sorry I'm soft for that trope I can't help it), and also the way that appearances were portrayed in this book overall.
And while I've never watched the Studio Ghibli version (I promise that I'm remedying that VERY SOON), I feel like I'm obsessed probably from the fanart intake, and experienced a bit of nostalgia while reading this. It was probably just the longing to live in this world, though.
I. JUST. LOVED. EVERYTHING.

The Keeper: Interesting because it gave more insight to how Cinder was saved, and Michelle Benoit, but it was kind of boring.
Glitches: How Cinder met her adoptive family, but mostly stuff we already knew.
The Queen's Army: It was about Wolf, but it was meh.
Carswell's Guide to Being Lucky: WTF? I love Thorne. Usually. Except when he makes Cress feel bad.

"And a little bit of charm because, of all the things he’d expected to come from his trip to the market, meeting a cute girl with messy hair and dirty work gloves had definitely not been one of them."
"Cinder started to smile, too, and though it had a sardonic edge to it, Kai felt like he’d won something."
"Not only would this allow for him to keep the transaction discreet, but it also meant that he would be picking up Nainsi in person, rather than having her dropped off with some nameless assistant at the palace. It meant he was sure to see Linh Cinder again."
"That mechanic was going to change everything."

This is the most perfect ending to a book series I have ever read.

AHEM. Anway.
I loved this book. So much. It is now my favorite from the whole series.
Cress x Thorne is super cute, with Cress being adorable yet naive (which is something that usually makes me hate characters, but not here!), and Thorne having a lot of character development of his own since the last book but also being super sweet towards Cress.
Cinder x Kai? .... *swoons* ...Yeah, let's just say that by chapter sixty-one, I am forever undone. Also the fact that seemingly all the characters ship Kaider, but moving on
(view spoiler)[I thought it was really unfair that Dr. Erland (or should I say Dr. Darnel) died from the mutated letumosis virus, especially before he got to know Cress or even be a father for her, but in a way, everything came full circle for him. (hide spoiler)]
Apart from all of that, however, there was a lot of character development in the book which I can see as super essential for the finale. We as the readers get to know a lot more about how the characters work together, with a healthy amount of humor and sarcasm, which I really enjoyed. A lot also happened plot-wise, and the story moved on a lot with various plotlines, seriously setting up the stage for the "final showdown" between Cinder & Co. and Levana. So much has happened, and yet there's still more to come.
(Yes, I realize I've said "a lot" like 4 times in the past paragraph alone, but oh well.)

speaking of the characters, i loved them, especially the dynamic that they had going on.

This book was so beautiful and such a satisfying ending to an amazing series. I literally loved it so hecking much.
Yes, there was a lot of detail in here and a lot of seemingly stray plot lines that tied in quite nicely at the end, when we finally got to see the 'big picture'.
I know that the first 50 pages were kind of boring along with all that other Tonist crap, but all of the stuff that happened later on just totally made up for it in my mind.
Seriously. So. Much. Happened!
(I mean, otherwise, I'd be hella disappointed. It's a whopping 625 pages.)
And what I truly appreciated was that there were good explanations and backstories that stayed consistent with what was going on, unlike other dystopias I've read. The author did an amazing job actually creating a world (well, techincally time) that works well with what happens in the book and that which precedes it.
But that ending. Specifically that last forking chapter Damn.
