What accolades can I possibly add to the wonderful and glowing reviews that have preceded mine? Geraldine Brooks is a fantastic writer. She informs you, tears out your heart, and gently repairs the damage in this compelling novel. I have long loved her writing and am so glad her grief has abated enough to enable her to produce the wonderful prose I have long admired. I am grateful her writing drought has ended.

I don't think I've ever read Brooks but your glowing and exuberant review has me wondering why I've never picked her up! Do you have a favourite of hers, Barbara?

So lovely, Barbara. I did not know about the loss of her husband. Reading a little about that backstory made me want to read this even more.
A five-star rating often says all that needs to be said. I’ll be starting this one soon, so I’m glad it was a winner for you.
Love your succinct and heartfelt review Barbara👍..I've never read this author but this book is certainly calling to me..

Thanks, Jenna. I've been thinking about my favorite book by Brooks. I haven't read her non-fiction, but her novels are historical - not your favorite genre as I recall. That said, I loved Year of Wonders and Caleb's Crossing. You might like her deceased husband's books more. Confederates in the Attic is on my list, but I did read Spying on the South and loved it.

I read Spying on the South right after his death which happened while he was on a book tour for it. So very sad. I loved that book. I was never a celebrity fan, but I love knowing about authors. Thanks so much for commenting, Jennifer.

I can't imagine you not enjoying it as much as most of us have, Candi. Succinct it was - what more could be said? Thanks for your kind words.

You are so right about a 5 star review, Wyndy. I use 5 stars sparingly. I look forward to reading your thoughts when you get to this one. Thanks so much for your kind comment.

There are a few I still haven't read which I hope to get to soon. It's always nice to know there are some still waiting by an author that doesn't disappoint. Thanks for stopping by, Judith.

Great review Barbara. I read most of her books several years ago and thought they were exceptional. I'm adding this to my TBR.

I have a weird relationship with Geraldine Brooks. I love her writing, and she always does impeccable research, but I also feel like her stories start to unravel from the mid-point on and that she rarely "sticks the landing."
I'm happy to see the rave reviews for this one, and I'm glad that she's back "on the horse again."

I haven't read all her books, but I have loved all those I have. Your point about the unraveling is interesting. I hope you will not find that in Horse. I may try her non-fiction which I was unaware of. Thanks for commenting, Julie.

I've had that same experience with March, People of the Book, and Year of Wonders. I'm not sure what happens--she always starts out strong. I know that endings are tricky, and I often struggle with them myself. Maybe there's something about wrapping up her stories that she hasn't mastered, but perhaps she has done so here.

I have a copy of this waiting for me to find the right time to squeeze it in, so I really appreciate your wonderful review, Barbara! I have read a few of her books, but it feels as if it's been ages since the last one I read. Looking forward to reading this one!

I recently read her account of growing up in Australia. Fiction or nonfiction, she is a great writer. Thanks for commenting, Lynne.
