"Nobody in the universe ever promised you anything. Most things break, including hearts. The lessons of a life amount not to wisdom but to scar tissue and callus."
Thus muses Joe, a curmudgeonly man nearing 70, as he reflects back on his life.
A postcard arrives from Denmark, which has Joe digging out some old journals. His wife, seeing them, asks Joe to read them to her. Together they delve into their time, years ago, spent in Denmark after the death of their son.
This book is beautifully written and engaging. I'm not a lover of relationship stories but this one sucked me right in. Joe is highly intelligent and I loved his reflections and how he weighed past choices in the light of where he is now.
This was my first Stegner and it will not be my last!

It's quite good, Jeannie. For the first couple chapters I thought I might DNF it but something kept me going. Glad I did!

It was more nostalgic than melancholic I think, though those particular sentences are quite sad. (view spoiler)

I agree with you there, Diane, even with just having read one novel.

Thanks, Jan! Hope you'll love this one too. I added Crossing to Safety, along with some others, to my tbr last night. As though either of us need to add any more to our piles! :-D

Thanks, Julie. It was so engrossing and so well written. Even stony-hearted me couldn't help but love it!

This was my first Stegner, too, Jenna, and the love snuck up on me. Joe really was a beautiful curmudgeon, wasn’t he?

Yes he was, Jennifer! He was a great character!

Great review, Jenna! This wasn't my favorite of Stegner's books, but I did like it. Glad to see you're willing to try more.

At least this one, Kathleen, but if the others are anything like this, maybe all of them!

I have to agree with you, Lisa, even after only reading one book. I'm really looking forward to more of him.

Oh hurray for 5 stars! I've read 3 Stegner novels so far and am a certified fan :) I've read All the Little Live Things and met Joe in that one. Maybe this one should be next. Lovely review, Jenna :)

Thanks, Candi. He wrote exquisitely, didn't he? Maybe I should read All the Little Live Things next, while Joe is still fresh in my head.

Lovely review, Jenna. It did prompt me to think, though, that although I’m familiar with “termagant”, it is somewhat less useful than “curmudgeon”, since I’ve never seen it used as an adjective (“curmudgeonly”). (With reference, of course, to Alan’s recent review.)

Hmmm, "termagantly" doesn't have quite the same ring to it, does it? I hope I"ll remember "termagent" though, and I'm glad you gave me reason to write it in another sentence to help with that :)

Yes, he sure did write exquisitely! And perhaps yes, you should read that one next while Joe is nearly a fully formed human being in your mind :)
