Tara Chevrestt is a deaf woman, aviation mechanic, and dog mom. She loves vintage clothes and period dramas and wishes she could time travel. You’ll never see her without her Kindle or a book within reach. As a child, she would often take a flashlight under the covers to finish the recent Nancy Drew novel when she was supposed to be sleeping.

She no longer writes books, but you can still read her thoughts and opinions on books and movies and articles on women's issues on her blog.

Return to Blood: Underwhelming Sequel to Better the Blood

I was really looking forward to Return to Blood by Michael Bennett.  It's the sequel to Better the Blood which really wowed me.  See my review of Better the Blood here.  Return to Blood was a good deal less engaging.

There were point of view switches that sometimes confused me because it took me some time to determine who the point of view character was,  and when it was taking place within the no

“Sometimes girls, especially those whose tastes aren't routine, don't get a fair break. Too many of us have been bred to timidity. That is why those who escape must run, not stroll, toward what they desire. They mustn't look back. They mustn't question their own instincts. And they mustn't listen to the naysayers. If they can only follow their own true course, well then, they will be as renowned for their bravery as the greatest men are.”

“I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”

“Dogs get after big living. They seem illiterate of worry, yet able to read joys that elude us. They quietly shout to us: Wag your backside to music instead of your tongue to malice.”

Alan Bennett
“The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours.”

I suspect the publicist got my name from another publicist who sent me one book I requested months ago. Problem is the new publicist didn't look very closely at my blog or my reading choices or he wouldn't have sent me these books.

Hayes, have you seen my new blog header??

message 26: by Tara

Tara Chevrestt Friends and fellow readers, Question: Have you ever received books in the mail from publishers that (A) You never asked for. (B) Have no interest in whatsover.

I received two hardback books in the mail today. Neither one interests me in the slightest. I don't know why they were sent to me. Do I contact the publicist listed on the papers with the books and tell him I don't want them and pay my own money to ship the unwanted things back or what? I got too many books I WANT to read to waste time on books I DON'T want to read.

Help!!!

Tara Chevrestt Question for my friends: When a book 40 years old is republished by a different publisher with new cover and all that, do they also edit or change the story or prose? I've found a book I want to read and discovered it isn't new at all, but has been out 40 years and published by probably 10 or more different people. Read the new copy or old? Will anything be different?
