specifying descriptor
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Lexemes
Description | (qualifier) adjective or adverb sense that when attached to the hypernym/troponym, evaluates to the definition of the more specific subject sense |
---|---|
Data type | Sense |
Domain | Qualifier for statements of hyperonym (P6593) or troponym of (P5975) |
Allowed values | senses of lexemes of Lexical Category adjective (Q34698) or adverb (Q380057) |
Example 1 | [run (L279-S1) --(troponym of (P5975))--> move (L279-S1)] → swiftly (L28373-S1), afoot (L19965-S1) |
Example 2 | [orate (L24759-S1) --(troponym of (P5975))--> talk (L379-S1)] → pompously (L45298-S1) |
Example 3 | [cottage (L30977-S1) --(hyperonym (P6593))--> house (L512-S1)] → small (L3414-S1) |
Example 4 | [couch (L22633-S1) --(hyperonym (P6593))--> seat (L2257-S1)] → upholstered (L45300-S1) |
Example 5 | [seat (L2257-S1) --(hyperonym (P6593))--> furniture (L12162-S1)] → sitting (L45341-S2) |
Planned use | Now that troponym and hyperonym properties have been added, I plan to add them to some common word senses. |
Motivation
[edit]I think it would be great to be able to semantically encode the actual definitions of senses in a structured, machine-readable way, rather than only having a human-readable gloss. This could be one way of achieving that. Liamjamesperritt (talk) 12:09, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Support Nice idea! I've been wondering about other ways we can structure senses too... ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
- good idea --- Jura 04:30, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
- Question @Liamjamesperritt, ArthurPSmith: if a statement has this qualifier several times, would each be an alternative value (A) or would they need to be combined (B)? In other words, to use alternative values, do we need one statement (A) or several (B). Sample 1 above points to (B). --- Jura 04:29, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Jura1: Good question. Since many hyponyms can't be distinguished from their superclass by a single descriptor, so in my opinion, option (B) would be the way to go. Option (A) could be achieved by adding synonyms to the target descriptor sense's page. Any further thoughts would be appreciated. Liamjamesperritt (talk) 05:44, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
- seems fine. --- Jura 18:11, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
