Cameby is a rural locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia.[2] In the 2021 census, Cameby had a population of 53 people.[1]
Geography
[edit]The Warrego Highway and Western railway line are the southern boundary of the locality. The Rywung railway station serves the locality (26°41′06″S 150°28′19″E / 26.6850°S 150.47189°E).[3][4]
There is an identified thermal coal resource area known as Davies Road (26°36′07″S 150°25′08″E / 26.602°S 150.419°E) with reserves estimated at 49.4 megatonnes (48,600,000 long tons; 54,500,000 short tons) within the locality.[5]
The land use is predominantly grazing on native vegetation with some cropping.[3]
History
[edit]Cambey Provisional School opened in 1922 and closed circa 1935.[6] It was at 613 Cameby Road (26°37′55″S 150°29′11″E / 26.63184°S 150.48634°E).[7]
Rywung State School opened on 1 November 1944 and closed on 31 December 1968.[6] It was located on C Kerrs Road near the Warrego Highway north of the Rywung railway station (26°41′02″S 150°28′22″E / 26.6840°S 150.4727°E).[8] Being north of the Warrego Highway means the school's location is now within Cameby.[9]
Demographics
[edit]In the 2016 census, Cameby had a population of 56 people.[10]
In the 2021 census, Cameby had a population of 53 people.[1]
Education
[edit]There are no schools in the locality. The nearest primary schools are Chinchilla State School in Chinchilla to the south-east and Miles State School in Miles to the west. The nearest primary schools are Chinchilla State High School in Chinchilla and Miles State High School in Miles.[3]
