Hierodula patellifera, commonly known as giant Asian mantis, Asian mantis, Indochina mantis and Harabiro Mantis,[1] is a species of praying mantis in the family Mantidae.
Description
[edit]Males are about 45–65 mm long and females around 65–75 mm long.[2] Individuals can vary from green to brown in color. Although this species is fairly large for mantises in general, it is among the smallest members of the genus Hierodula, of which many species can reach 110–150 mm.
Range
[edit]They are found in Malaysia, Hawaii, India, Nepal,[3] Italy (San Paolo Solbrito), Indonesia (Java, West Sumba,[4]), Korean Peninsula, Philippines, New Guinea, southern China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa).[5][6][7]
Habitat
[edit]H. patellifera lives in trees and in grasslands at the edges of forests.[8]
