Smoker?
[edit]An anonymous editor just added the claim that Allan Border is a smoker. Can someone provide a source for this claim (or refute it)? Thanks. Stephen Turner 10:03, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
Thank you again to the Wikipedia police who constantly check websites.
I have seen Allan over the years smoke whilst waiting in the changing rooms. Occassionally, Channel 9 have accidentally shown him on air smoking whilst waiting to have a bat. 210.56.65.246 13:16, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- I meant to post a note here the other day when I removed this entry: In addition, a little known fact is that Allan is a noted smoker. I apologise for not doing that that.
- What is a noted smoker? And what has it to do with this article? Please provide references that a) he does in fact smoke AND b) explain why that information is of any signifigance to this article. -- Ian ≡ talk 17:16, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
- I can also verify seeing Allan smoke on Channel 9 coverage, of course the camera shied away very quickly. Steven Fitter 01:52, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Picked and stuck with young players?
[edit]The article says, "he and Simpson set a pattern by picking young talented players and sticking by them (Steve Waugh, for example, was retained as a batsman despite not scoring a century for his first 26 tests, Border recognising the talent he possessed).". That is not my recollection at all. There was a huge turnover of players in the mid to late 80s, and the side only became settled after the successful 1989 Ashes tour. I would submit that Steve Waugh was the only young player who was picked and then persisted with despite indifferent early form. I propose deleting the above half-sentence. - OK, no dissention, so I'm going to change it. Rocksong 05:21, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
NSW to Qld?
[edit]It happened when I was pretty young but wasn't his decision to change states fairly controversial at the time? I seem to recall him getting a hard time in Sydney for a while afterwards. (Tigerman2005) 16:57 17-11-06
References
[edit]Is the best reference we can dig up for a retired Australian cricket captain, his own autobiography and cricinfo.com? Raw stats don't assert notability! Neither does writing your own biography. Garrie 04:29, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed. This biog is big on stats, but tells us nothing much about Border himself, in the section called "Australia's Rise". BTY, in that section i counted 13 sentences that started with "the xxx season saw....". How can a year see anything? it hasn't got any eyes. just lazy writing. It reads like a bunch of stats joined together with conjunctions, with no research. Where are the controversies, etc.? On the Qld-NSW thing, Border was influenced to move by Greg Chappell, and he got the razz from the SCG crowd for a few seasons afterward when he played there.
- True. A regurgitation of stats is what Cricinfo does. We're an encyclopedia. We should go beyond numbers. GizzaDiscuss © 09:56, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
