Supermax
[edit]I'm going to edit the mainspace page because I'll just get reverted, but someone should probably change the bit where it says that HRMU wasn't Australia's first Supermax prison. It was not; Katingal at Long Bay was. See Long Bay Correctional Centre. Thanks -27.32.27.104 (talk) 15:44, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
- Considering that I wrote/edited the majority of both this article and Long Bay Correctional Centre; I disagree about which was Australia's first Supermax prison. I acknowledge that Katingal was build long before the HRMU at Guolburn. However, Katingal was a primitive environment, not on the standards of what we would would today call a Supermax prison. Chris Masters' feature on Supermax broadcast on ABCTV Four Corners is a good exposure of the differences between Katingal and HRMU Gouldburn. A critical paragraph about the difference can be sourced from the Supermax article, that states "In September 2001, the Australian state of New South Wales opened a facility in the Goulburn Correctional Centre to the supermax standard. While its condition is an improvement over that of Katingal of the 1970s, this new facility is nonetheless designed on the same principle of sensory deprivation." Goulburn CC is not all supermax
[edit]Article lead currently reads The Goulburn Correctional Centre, an Australian supermaximum security prison... which is arguably incorrect and at the very best highly misleading. Goulburn CC is a prison which contains both maximum and supermax units. The majority of the prisoners at Goulburn CC are not in supermax.
See
- http://www.correctiveservices.justice.nsw.gov.au/Pages/CorrectiveServices/custodial-corrections/table-of-correctional-centres/goulburn.aspx Goulburn Correctional Centre is a maximum/minimum security institution for males....
- http://www.correctiveservices.justice.nsw.gov.au/Pages/CorrectiveServices/custodial-corrections/table-of-correctional-centres/high-risk-management-correctional-centre.aspx The High Risk Management Correctional Centre is a purpose-built maximum security facility for male offenders and is situated within the Goulburn Correctional Complex.
These are of course primary sources, but they demonstrate the inaccuracy of the current article. I will fix it in time, I'm looking for secondary sources and ones that give the numbers each unit can accommodate, but feel free to have a go meantime. Andrewa (talk) 15:03, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
