User:CalJW left this as an HTML comment after Lord Nelson's entry:
He belongs here not because he is necessarily the most important person on the list, but because he is the only one that people are likely to seach for by this name alone with any frequency. This is a practical matter. Randomly listing everyone with Nelson in their name is just a typed up version of a search result, and thus pretty pointless.

Nelson → Nelson (disambiguation) — So that "Nelson" can redirect to Lord Nelson's article, which is clearly the primary topic.--Kotniski (talk) 16:19, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose Nelson is also a common surname and given name. While there are many places and institutions that, directly or inderectly, derive their name from Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, "Nelson" on its own is too general to have a single primary topic. That Lord Nelson redirects to the historical figure and that he is prominantly mentioned on the disambiguation page is sufficient. City of Destruction 16:46, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'd have thought Lord Nelson would still be the topic being sought by the vast majority of readers typing in "Nelson", but we'll see what others think (I've mentioned the matter at WT:WikiProject Disambiguation).--Kotniski (talk) 17:37, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- Comment: Are there any statistics on where people go after this page? CRGreathouse (t | c) 19:09, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose until there are statistics. CRGreathouse (t | c) 16:41, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Support. There are books which use just "Nelson" to refer to Lord Nelson - [1]. And the Lord Nelson article gets an average of 1.3K hits a day. I haven't counted, though I suspect that would be more than all the other articles on the disamb page put together. SilkTork *YES! 21:52, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
- Comment echoing CRGreathouse. How is it clear that there's a primary topic? And why do you, SilkTork, suspect that would be more than all the other article put together? OTOH, "Nelson" is not necessarily too general to have a single primary topic, City of Destruction. The tools listed at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC should be used to support or contradict those claims. -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:21, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Support Clearly the primary meaning, most of the places or objects listed here are much less well known, the few people or objects which are well known e.g. Nelson Mandela, Nelson's column, are not normally known as just plain "Nelson". PatGallacher (talk) 14:10, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Comment, Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson clearly receives many more hits than any of the other Nelsons listed here, some more meticulous research would be need to lay claim to more than all the others combined. However, that doesn't necessarily tell us that most people looking for simply "Nelson" are looking for the admiral. I suggest using a specialize redirect from this page to help gather such statistics, similar to how Lincoln (president) is used as the link on Lincoln to gather more information. Although, that link has been there for some time, and has over several months constituted more that half of the hits for Lincoln, indicating that more than half of readers are going to the president's page after hitting the disambiguation page. There is no agreed criteria for how much is enough to warrant a redirect to the primary topic. older ≠ wiser 21:38, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
- Comment. The first thing I thought of when presented with "Nelson" was Nelson (band). =) Powers T 01:37, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose. To me in Manchester in England the admiral is famous but has gone back into the past and "Nelson" tends to first mean either the type of wrestling holds or the town Nelson, Lancashire. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 05:45, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Request - any objection to leaving this unchanged for now, but gather data using the specialized redirect as suggested by older/wiser? Can someone with experience set this up?--Kotniski (talk) 08:24, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Nelson Muntz isn't on here?
[edit]Hi! I noticed that Nelson Muntz, from the Simpsons, isn't on this page. I wonder why? He's bound to be on this page. --208.96.121.65 (talk) 02:09, 17 March 2011 (UTC).
