Is the onset a moment or a duration?

The way I usually see the term, "onset" means the *instant* that an audio event begins, as opposed to "[Transient (acoustics)]", which usually means the duration of time from the onset until the event settles down into a steady state. So I would call the time "in which the amplitude rises from zero to an initial peak" the "transient", whereas the "onset" is the (durationless) moment when the amplitude first starts to rise.
