Early Life and Education

.Mohd Hamdi was born in 1971 in Muar, Johor. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from Imperial College London, England; a Master of Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Management from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom; and a Doctor of Engineering degree from Kyoto University, Japan[1][2][3]

Academic Career

Mohd Hamdi's academic career began in 1995 when he joined the University of Malaya (UM) as a tutor, then became a lecturer in the Design and Manufacturing Engineering Department in 1997. He was then appointed as Head of the Design and Manufacturing Engineering Department (2003-2006). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and later served as full Professor in 2010. He is also the former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UM (2009-2011) and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), UM (2011-2014 ). In addition, his services and expertise are also recognized internationally. Mohd Hamdi is also a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2015-2016.

His academic excellence and extraordinary leadership qualities have made Mohd Hamdi lead Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as Vice Chancellor on 1 January 2019[4] and on 1 November 2020, he was appointed as the 13th Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaya. He replaced the incumbent, Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahim Hashim whose contract ends on 31 October 2020.

He also served as the Head of the Material Manufacturing and Processing Technology Center (AMMP) and Industry 4.0 Research Center (CRI4.0) at UM. In addition to producing more than 160 effective publications in journals indexed by Web of Science, he has also recorded an h-index of 33 with a total of more than 385 citations.

As part of his global stewardship, between the year 2022-2023 Mohd Hamdi has been elected or appointed to a number of prominent global alliances. He was elected to the Steering Committee of the Association of Pacific Universities (APRU) for the Asia - Southeast Asia seat for a two-year term from 2022 to 2024[5]. He was also appointed to the Association of Commonwealth University Council as a full member for a 3-year term until August 2025[6], and was recently elected the International Association of Universities (IAU) Administrative Board 2022-2026.[7]
