September 2023

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Belbury. I noticed that you recently removed content from Citation needed without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. The hatnote is flagged as a selfref so doesn't appear offsite. Belbury (talk) 14:59, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I just still think useful to remove the "about" template because it does not link to an encyclopedic article. Fourmidable (talk) 15:04, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suggest raising a wider discussion about deprecating {{self-reference}}, if you think that a disambiguation statement that points to a Wikipedia help page or an instruction to editors is always inappropriate and shouldn't be supported by templates. Belbury (talk) 15:09, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I think so. Fourmidable (talk) 15:12, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And please stop, and revert, removing long-time hatnotes. Your concern that they are directed at WP articles is not valid as many readers looking for, say, Wikipedia administrators will go directly to the encyclopedia article. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:16, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In enwiki, we allow wikilinks to outside of the article space. I do not know what the frwiki convention is, but please respect enwiki conventions. Peaceray (talk) 15:36, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unless you can show us an enwiki policy or guideline that excludes linking outside of the article space ....
But I edit here in enwiki considerably more than you do, & am unaware of any restrictions to wikilinking outside of the article space. Peaceray (talk) 15:38, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So why is this a rule in the French Wikipedia? Fourmidable (talk) 15:51, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Different language Wikipedias have different rules. English Wikipedia, for instance has different citation conventions, such as putting the last name first. Please respect enwiki conventions.
I am going to start marking your reversions as disruptive editing / edit warring. Peaceray (talk) 15:56, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What does putting the last name first have to do with putting non-encyclopedic links at the top of some articles? (This is not a question against you, I wonder if it is possible to improve the rule here.) Fourmidable (talk) 16:00, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Peaceray: why do you state these edits [1] and [2] as "Disruptive editing"??? Fourmidable (talk) 16:02, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I really can't figure out why these specific edits are "disruptive". I can understand that there is a concern with my removal of links, but my proposal to merge general articles on feminism does not seem problematic in any way. Fourmidable (talk) 16:07, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies. When quickly reverting edits that seem disruptive, I was reverting any changes that appeared at the top, since most of your deletions were templates at the top. I completely missed that these were additions & that your edits were totally proper. I was wrong in these two instances, & I am sorry. I will remove the edit waring notice. Peaceray (talk) 16:20, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I gave that as an example of another convention that English Wikipedia that is different from other language Wikipedias. If you cannot understand & respect the conventions of English Wikipedia, I respectfully ask that you stop editing in enwiki. Peaceray (talk) 16:02, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can understand the conventions, please do not be condescending. Fourmidable (talk) 16:03, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies if I was hasty in my action, & sorry if my comments come across as condescending. I was expressing frustration in the heat of the moment. Peaceray (talk) 16:29, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Np. But I'm still open to debate about the header links (I won't touch them again until the consensus will be modified). Fourmidable (talk) 16:24, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the proper place to discuss this would be to open a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Self-references to avoid.
The Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Self-references to avoid guideline states: Although self-references within Wikipedia articles to the Wikipedia project should usually be avoided, there are exceptions. Some examples of acceptable self-references are articles about Wikipedia, categories, and maintenance templates.
There is a policy about the speedy deletion of cross-namespace redirects that states: This applies to redirects (apart from shortcuts) from the main namespace to any other namespace except the Category:, Template:, Wikipedia:, Help: and Portal: namespaces. Thus wikilinks to those namespaces are valid. My understanding is that these wikilinks would generally appear in templates or the See also or the External links section,
There is also an essay about this topic, Wikipedia:Cross-namespace redirects. Peaceray (talk) 17:00, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]

Information icon Hello Fourmidable and thank you for proposing an article merger between Auberon Herbert, Voluntaryism and Voluntary taxation. I noticed that you didn't start a discussion or give a rationale for your proposal. Please consider adding a discussion section to the target article's talk page where you explain why you believe the merger should be performed. Doing so makes the process faster and attract more editors to the discussion. For guidance related to mergers see the help page or ask experienced mergers for advice at WikiProject Merge's talk page.

Thanks! Grnrchst (talk) 15:03, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
